The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is an action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks and the Take-Two Interactive division 2K Games. It is the fourth installment in The Elder Scrolls action fantasy series, following The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and preceding The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The game was released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 in March 2006, and on PlayStation 3 in March 2007, with a mobile version of the game released on May 2, 2006. Taking place within the fictional province of Cyrodiil, Oblivion's main story revolves around the player character's efforts to thwart a fanatical cult known as the "Mythic Dawn" that plans to open portal gates to a demonic realm known as "Oblivion". The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely. A perpetual objective for players is to improve their character's skills, which are numerical representations of certain abilities. Early in the game, seven skills are selected by the player as major skills for their character, with those remaining termed as minor skills.
Development for Oblivion began in 2002, directly after the release of Morrowind, opting for tighter pacing in gameplay and greater plot focus than in past titles. To design the graphics, Bethesda used an improved Havok physics engine, high-dynamic-range lighting, procedural content generation tools that allowed developers to quickly create detailed terrains, and the Radiant AI system, which enabled non-player characters (NPCs) to make choices and engage in behaviors more complex than in past titles. The game features fully voiced NPCs-a first for the series-and the music of award-winning composer Jeremy Soule. Upon release, Oblivion was well received by critics and has won a number of industry and publication awards. It was praised for its impressive graphics, expansive game world, and schedule-driven NPCs, and is now considered one of the greatest games ever made. It was successful both commercially and critically. Following a number of smaller content releases, Bethesda released two expansion packs for the game, Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, which were bundled with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition which was released in 2007, and later re-released as a fifth-anniversary edition in 2011.

Fun fact: the Adoring Fan's voice actor, Craig Sechler, didn't understand why he was made to play such an annoying character. He said "no one's gonna like this character!" The dudes at Bethesda responded with "exactly! We want the fans to hate him!" Craig loved all the creative ways fans were killing the Adoring Fan, and even remixing his dialogue into songs.

@nemeru3352

that sounds like nostalgia talking. There's no nuance in the conflicts or most quests in oblivion. Skyrim and morrowind has this. And skyrim does everything besides being on equal ground in terms of music

@@nemeru3352 nah dude, Skyrim just sucks in terms of story, its kind of sad that its DLCs and sidequests have a better story then then main one, lets also not forget that in Oblivion whatever you did had an impact on the world overall and the NPCs recognize you for it, unlike Skyrim, *so you are the newest member of the Compainons, what do you do, fetch the mead?* Guard in Skyrim to actual Harbinger of the Companions

@@samuelhaverghast2442 Am talking comparatively. Main quest, isn't well written or anything, but you don't have to do oblivon gates, instead you fights dragon's, which tho they get repetitive after awhile, they're the best most Dynamic thing you'll fight in the entire series. Skyrim is Oblivion, more of the same, just with a lot of necessarily refinement.combat is more flashy if still shallow, magic is cool this time,duel welding was a great addition. becoming a werewolf, vampire lord.Not having 5 voice actors. Once you've walked out of the sweers of oblivion you've seen the whole thing cuz its incredible visually repetitive. There'd some nuance in the conflicts in skyrim, Nords vs the empire. and then the elfs. Everything was basic bitch fantasy in 4
@557deadpool
@557deadpool 5 жыл бұрын
@@nemeru3352 yes you fight Dragons...that all act the exact same and are easy as balls, the combat being more flashy literally means fucking nothing, the magic was always fine, dual wielding added nothing to the game other than added fake complexity, you can become a Vampire, Werewolf, Wereboar in Daggerfall so that's not special in the slightest, again that doesn't matter, implying that Skyrim isn't visually repetitive XD, there is no nuance and on top of that you literally didn't even give examples as to why you think they're nuanced. You say that but Skyrim isn't basic bitch fantasy? Meanwhile ignoring the fact that it has dragons which are literally as basic as you can get for a fantasy setting? And let's not forget that Skyrim has less content, less features, dumbed down the gameplay to where classes don't fucking exist, wasted our time with two main plots that mean fuck all and have no effect on the world, one plot is so poorly written that they go out of their way to make the Stormcloaks out to be the biggest assholes on the planet, etc. Skyrim was a completely shit game that has no charm or personality whatsoever and their half-baked attempt at pleasing the people who liked Oblivion with adding Sheogorath but worse than how he was in 4 was pathetic.

Amazing stuff as always. The Elder Scrolls games, despite being a buggy mess at times, just have a way of enchanting you and making you fall in love with the worldspace. Jeremy Soule's music in the last two surely plays a large role in that. Thanks for the review.

I can’t wait for more Elder Scrolls reviews! Morrowind on Xbox was my first experience. I can still hear the music and see the rain droplets hitting the surface of the water. I remember getting the ability to jump clear across the map lol. Plus I had the boots of blinding speed with some trinket that offset it and let me see.

Face visuals will kinda lack but it has some neat mechanics like custom spell making that were cut in Skyrim. Plus the Shivering Isles DLC is really well done. I liked both games but atmosphere wise I think Oblivion had more diversity. Don't forget about mods (if on PC) to spice up combat a bit, personally using Deadly Reflex (:

@TheBreakingBenny
@TheBreakingBenny 5 жыл бұрын
@@williamj.6418 Needing to change to a torch every five seconds would be dangerously counterintuitive, for sure. That's why being able to wield a weapon in each hand is a blessing (torch and one-handed sword/axe/lance or dagger), and if you can use spells that emit light that works too.

One of my favorite things of Oblivion is just how many weird questlines there are. I've talked to several friends about it for years and only recently found out they had never found or completed the quest where you travel into an artist's painting to save him, which was probably my favorite overall. That level of awesome content just sitting, you're not forced in to it, and can outright ignore or miss it, it just doesn't happen in games anymore.

8:32 Reminds me of the 2008 Pirates of the Caribbean game. Pushed out way too early because Disney wanted it to come out around the time of the movie release.
