If you like good writing and storytelling, are ok with a game made on a smaller budget, and don't want microtransactions or bugs this game is damned solid.

I agree. 70 hour games are puffed up with Grundy filler. I'd much rather do a 20-30ish hour game like this with the replayability of having differing marks on the game world. THIS, in my mind, is a good New Standard.

I felt that way about most parts of the game. It was all good, all fun, but every piece of the game was just kinda shallow. Mods are limited, weapon variety sucks, quests rarely effect the world, and the overworlds never have interesting locations to explore outside of the 1 or 2 per world made for quests. Fun but shallow as a small pond. Not worth more than 2 playthroughs at best imo.

The perk system is also really lacking. New vegas and 3 had some genuinely unique and interesting perks. Mr sandman, cannibal, mysterious stranger. They all add to your build and furthered your ability to roleplay aswell as add interesting gameplay mechanics. Outerworlds are just a bit boring and are simply 20% faster movement here. Or 15% better crits there. Game is good but It definitely dosen't come close to being what fallout new vegas was.

I think the main issue with it is how easy the combat becomes and you quickly overpower each enemy you go against. I thought the game was "ok". The pros were that the story for the most part was good. A lot of the characters have that great Obsidian dialogue that will get you pretty into it. My main gripes were the skill tree, especially with the companions, the choices are all the same for all of them except 3. The ending was pretty weak, and realistically there's only 1 choice unless your characters a brain dead idiot that can't see further ahead. The weapon system was pretty rushed, there's like 6 weapons and 4 armor set models that get recycled with mk2 versions of the weapon and "gold" versions of the armor. There's a couple unique/science weapons but they're weak outside of the hammer. You're also constantly jumping back and forth planets that you've previously visited for turn-ins and random quests that show up later on. I wish it was more like Mass Effect where you only visit a planet once for the most part by making it memorable and unique, bang out all of the quests, and head back to your quest hub (ship). Don't expect New Vegas or Mass Effect 2 quality out of it, and you'll enjoy it.

@@Fools_Requiem Well, when there's only a few companies who are making top Western RPGs right now with Obsidian, Larian Studios and CDPR, it's hard not to get hyped, when it is them who are releasing a game. Especially, when we've been starving for a big RPG since well, Witcher 3 and Dvinity Original Sin 2 (though I'd argue its a niche because of the turn based combat) and that was 3-4 years ago. As for sandbox RPGs specifically like Fallout, we haven't had one since New Vegas which was 9 years ago. I finished the Outer Worlds a few hours ago and it's a very good game. I recently beat Outer Worlds with no expectations going in, and I found it to be just okay. The main criticism I have is even though there is a decent amount of space to explore, the maps always feel too small. As someone who beat the game on supernova with most of the damage resist flaws, I really appreciate this review. The dialogue and choices really had me loving the game for the first half of the game then the bland combat, almost pointless loot, and later quests/choices beginning to show flaws had me just wanting to get done with the game. I had somewhere around 7k heavy ammo and 200 medical items at the end of the game seeing as how 90% of the loot is ammo, consumables you wont use, and a actual fuck ton of mods that barely do anything. On the last mission I respected into melee science and max leveled the science hammer just to spice things up. Still, I imagine if I just explored less and played on hard I would've had alot less frustrations so I think the game deserves a good 7 or 8/10 imo. Just had to vent a bit here since most reviewers seem to have not finished the game or fully explored to see flaws in the game.

Tbh I haven’t finished the game (no idea what point I’m at right now, but I’d guess somewhere around 60-70% done, I’m playing on hard difficulty) yet I still fully agree with all the things you said. Combat has very little variance and all the different consumables feel rather weak compared to Fallout’s Psycho, Jet, Mentats etc. especially because they all mostly do the same thing but just with different names and icons. I also didn’t have much to spend my bits on except for adreno, so I currently have like 120~ Adreno and no encounter to use it in because I have a Hunting Rifle Ultra which just lets me one-shot most enemies before combat even starts. The game has good dialogue but I feel like the game is rather disappointing overall, and it also doesn’t help that companions are terrible, I’ve given them good armor and weapons and they almost always die within the first 4-5 seconds of a fight, unlike fallout where if your companions have proper gear they can carry encounters basically

1:59 "Something worth praising" No. it's not. Your review is basically stating that The Outer Worlds is good because it's stable. Being stable is something ALL developers need to strive for. Stability doesn't make a game great, it makes it playable. What makes the game great is its story, characters and combat system... none of which The Outer Worlds does spectacularly well. The story is fractured and many dialog segments are entirely pointless. The voice acting is mid-grade work... some of the voice actors are downright terrible. That leaves the combat system to carry the weight and it doesn't really happen. The combat is fair, but not outstanding. It's far too predictable and once you have a handle on which guns are best, you can sail through the combat almost effortlessly. It's not a "great" game, it's an "average" game made worse by its last-gen UI system, its weird controller layout and its odd choice of the use of a last-gen UI. Let's talk about stability for a moment. Because the premiere (and I use this term loosely) game development studio in this genre doesn't fundamentally understand the meaning of "stable", this doesn't mean all game developers don't understand this. It's just that we've become jaded by the instabilities in this genre, primarily because of one developer. When we finally get a game that's written by software developers who do practice proper coding and testing methodologies, that shouldn't automatically give the game a great review. Yes, stability should be taken into consideration, but you don't play a game for stability, you play it because the game has merit and is worth playing. The Outer Worlds is a game that you should only play IF you like to slog through tons and tons of dialog choices. This game is so dialog-centric that the perk and combat systems are treated as mere afterthoughts. Sure, they work, but they're not pretty to look at or use.

I... can't say you're wrong. Story and dialogue are funny, but the game is shallow, as people above have said. It just is. Choice's don't really matter. People are praising it too much just because it's from Obsidian. Outer Worlds is a proof-of-concept at best.

I havent actually played NV for more than a few hours. By the time it came out, I had already 100% Fallout 3 with like 900 hours in and was so over the formula that even though I knew NV was a better game, I couldn't bring myself to play it. Finally tried it a few years ago but it doesn't hold up enough to keep my interest, so I'm really glad these guys came out with what is basically the spiritual successor.

It is good game 'n all, but it really does feel like Mass Effect with a hint of New Vegas (but it feels like both of those are watered down). Both games alone have more content (without DLC) than Outer Worlds. Also many maps doesn't equal a one big map filled with content. It makes each one of them feel little claustrophobic.

There is actually a point to doing the companion side quests. Doing a companions quest grants you a unique buff if they’re in the party and it’s pretty handy, one gives you a 50% reduction to bribe prices and others are more combat heavy

I think for a new IP, either would be fine. If it's slightly average but really polished, it is easy to build on that for a sequel because they don't have to reinvent the wheel If it's unique but flawed, it can become a cult classic of sorts and they can iron out technical issues for the sequel I think in 2019 they just wanted a working product lmao. That already puts it above alot of other games

I think the best thing about Outer Worlds is that it is streamlined Obsidian Fallout not tied to Gamebryo (a la NV) or insane development time limits (see above). If the sequel nails space exploration in a way that gives the same sense of atmosphere and isolation as the best Fallout games, that shit will be legendary.

Just beat the game and here are a few things they could do to make it more interesting: 1. Reduce the number of items you can acquire. I was constantly flush with bits, consumables, weapons, ammo and armor. Ruined the challenge of monitoring your inventory and be cautious of what you used. 2. Eliminate the "bullet time." I used that maybe a handful of times starting out, but then never used it again. Replace it with a paused overlay of the enemy briefly and attack accordingly based on the read out. No slow motion. 3. Skill trees that aren't convoluted. I'm sure they wanted to stand out, but unique doesn't mean more stream lined. Half the time, I was just ditching my points into random shit because it didn't seem to matter anymore. 4. Good/Bad scale on companions. Piss them off too much, they leave. Make them happy, they'll tell you more about themselves and unlock quests. 5. There is only one sort of boss fight and it is a joke. Add more mini-bosses to keep things consistent rather than wait until the end and fight a greater enemy.

I did not expect a Fallout 4 or Far Cray 5 scale, the fact this game was made with far less resources than Fallout 76 or Far Cry 5 is commendable. Obsidian was nearly bankrupt and just scrapping by while completing this game.
