In actuality, Marine Raiders first began in WWII and Force Recon also did so. In August 1942, the 1st Mar Div landed on Guadalcanal without their heavy equipment such as the White M3 Scout Cars for the division Recon Battalion. So the Recon Marines underwent a crash course in what became Force Recon. On the other hand the Raiders were formed from the ground up under direct orders from the president. 1st Raider Bn under Meritt Edson were attached to the 1st Mar Div for the landings in the Solomon Islands and were crucial in the defense of Henderson Field. 2nd Raider Bn raided Makin Atol in a distraction for the Guadalcanal operation before also winding up on the island for a Long Patrol.

Force Recon did not start in WWII. It was only the Raiders. After WWII the Raiders were stood down. Force Recon stood up in 1957 and had a direct lineage to the Raiders but were not just a reconstitution of them. SOCOM wanted Force Recon in their bag of goodies, but the Marines would not place them at the complete beck and call of SOCOM. Force Recon was designated Special Forces Capable. Enter the Raiders. The powers that be decided that the Marines would stand a unit to be permanently attached to SOCOM. They drew from Force Recon originally then it became the Raiders.

@@showmefish This is accurate. The Modern Raiders came from Force Recon and when it first was stood up was ONLY recondos that led the way in Det 1 along with support MOS's. There was a need to expand which they then opened it up to ONLY 03's this only lasted a small time as they needed more dudes. This is where we are now.. any MOS can try out and get over to the Raiders. Recon has maintained the SO capabilities and are in lines with all other SOCOM units. Im sure ill get some keyboard warriors wanting to discuss tiers lol or smu's but the reality is the reality... recondos are the red head stepchild of SOCOM and everyone knows it... they are also the ONLY NON SOCOM unit still listed under SAD's team time requirements... Not many people know the true history of our community.

@@sebastiansawyer9566 Yep and very true. It's funny. We never wanted to put any Marines full time in SOCOM. Reasons given were everything from a manpower/resources draw on small branch, the Marine Corps is already special ops as the only truly combined arms 911 force, HQ did not fancy setting aside a group of Marines as "special" or set apart from all other Marines. I have to look through a box but I had a Janes Special Warfare Units of the World book from sometime in the 80s that with all the others like SEALS, SAS, Green Beenie's etc, had a whole chapter dedicated to the Marine Corps as a whole. They consider us special warfare because we (are? I don't think anyone else is close to true combined arms however we did loose tanks) were the only combined arms amphibious capable force projection force in the world at that time, with besides combat arms, had our own air force. I can't remember how they put it in naval terms, but I think the said something like we had kidnapped and forced the US Navy to due our transportation and medical bidding, LOL. P.S. Love all the Docs out there so don't get your snoopy dish in a wrinkle. You know you couldn't stand the blue water duty either once you spent time with us.

It should be noted that the original raiders were set up as a temporary unti in order to test out new weapons and tactics. Rhe men in these units would then be spread out among the entire Marine Corps to teach everyone else. Marine Raiders were established in 1942. There were two battalions. They were Dispanet after the war, and then re-occurred in the early 2000s there was a fight for them to be in special operations. The commandant didn’t want it at first and the army never wanted the Marines to be in special operations command. But that change in 2006.

The Marine Corps was vehemently against the formation of MARSOC (that’s why they didn’t allow anyone to join USSOCOM when it stood up in the 80s). It was directed by Donald Rumsfeld, for the Marine Corps to pony up a unit to assist in the GWOT. I was in 1st Force Recon Company, 4th platoon, when we became the first West Coast MARSOC unit and did multiple deployments after its inception. Some of Force Recon (1st & 2nd) went to MARSOC and some went to Battalion Recon. Force was re-established shortly after. If you have questions, reply to this.

Sorry, but I was assigned to 1st SOCOM (Abn), in 1987 when USSOCOM was established. At the time the Marine Chain of Command didn’t want to play in the Special Ops sandbox. They were worried about loss of control of their bodies, funding and the Spec Ops funneling off their best. The USMC said at the time all Marines are Special. A MARSOC Raider may have the longest pipeline of all the SOCOM units. If you start the count at getting off that bus and stepping on those yellow footprints . 14 weeks boot camp 6 more weeks School of Infantry, reaching corporal in an marine infantry unit another 3 years, many go to Force Recon first that’s another tough as hell course to pass , at least a couple years there before trying out for Raider. Almost all Raider trying out have probably spent at least 5 years in the Corps. That means many training exercises and maneuvers, possibly some combat deployments, promotions to first level NCO leadership then trying for Raider

Somewhere, you have a point. Only explain to me how you can be insulted, when you clearly point out you are neither of the two. I'm not sure what you want to achieve with this. Next to that, please also consider the lack of actual footage, so we are bound to using what is available or the closest thing to it in order to get our point across. Imho, I'm not insulting anyone, since calling Marine Raiders Force Recon or the other way around would surely not be considered an insult by any of the two. At the least it would be causing some confusion, but in that case refer back to my point about footage scarcity.

The USMC is an elite organization. Marine Infantry and other combat arms within the USMC have a very unique ethos and are incredibly aggressive compared to other units in the U S Military. There is a reason Marine Units got the toughest AO’s in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Pacific, etc, etc. Elite Units in the Army such as the 173 Airborne, 82 Airborne, 10th Mountain, 101 Airborne/ Air Assualt, also got the really tough jobs. The above stated Units are all Elite. Special Ops Units are Specialized and incredibly trained to do very precise things. If you want real combat power call in the Marines or the Army Units mentioned above. By the way, an Army Mech Infantry and an Armored Div are incredibly destructive to anything facing them. Any Special Operator will attest to that. Semper Fi from a former Marine 0311 and an Army 11Bravo. Sorry for the rambling but this who’s elite shit aggravates me. Oh yeah, Rangers are definitely elite. Rangers lead the way. I think Rangers are very similar to Marine Infantry in their Ethos and Discipline; a very Gung Ho Organization that can take down just about anything.
