This was such a wonderful conversation. Courtney is so well spoken and eloquently talks about complex topics like the drag backlash and trans panic with such compassion and care. She’s a great spokesperson because she’s actually been on these news shows with the goal of educating the public with a queer perspective. It was also great to hear Katya speak more in-depth on these issues and finish her thoughts uninterrupted. Just a really great back and forth between these two. I’m looking forward to continuing the rest of the conversation next week!

@@ellellios well you look back on episodes like 'walking dead hotness' it was 40 minutes and half of it was ad reads. Episodes are technically longer now with less ads because the revenue shifted - the ads are no longer how they make the money, the pod is their most core content that they do it on tour as standup comedy.
@maddieb.4282

@@kirax7293idk about half. But yeah also the more views and followers you build with a new product/platform, the more money you can leverage per ad read and support the pod on less ads overall. So it makes sense that as the podcast moves forward they’d drop unnecessary sponsor partnerships

glad katya brought up climate change knocking at the door. All these wedge issues from the right are making us tread water, fighting for basic respect and rights, when there is something so sinister looming over all of us right now. It's just frustrating, but I have hope for the future, especially with the insane summer of labor action, which will likely pull the US general population sharply left.

Courtney articulated what I’ve been thinking recently about the ‘drag queens are groomers’ discourse in Australia ‘being spoken with an American accent’. I’ve always been proud of the fact that we’re a comparatively accepting and safe country for queer people, but I’ve definitely noticed a small minority starting to parrot uneducated rhetoric they’ve picked up from American media. Overall though, as Katya said, we’re pretty gay and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
@sabaducia

Agree. It's augmented by media too. The conversations on TV vs Facebook vs Real Life are all very different, with different degrees of "American accent". I have to remind myself that Sky News or FB comments are probably the "worst" examples, and not representative of most people who think differently to me.

It recently has been proven that "men were hunters, women were gatherers" is a total myth and all the evidence says that everyone back in prehistoric times had to both hunt and gather. Also it is said that the best hunters of every tribe were old and experienced women. I've heard that it is not even new to discover evidence of lots of hunter women and the evidence has always been there but science chose to theorize things in a way that felt more "natural" to them and their belief system.

A great conversation about gender. Courtney makes such a valid point re men agreeing gay man are different whilst also arguing the binary.

Such a brilliant and essential conversation! There is something so powerful about queer, iconic members of the drag community breaking down the challenges of the social strata. Makes me feel immensely safe in a way that’s difficult to articulate. Hopeful - perhaps the word I’m looking for is hopeful. Oooo there ain’t no other way! 🥰❤️

I sometimes find Courtney quite pageanty in her manner, for want of a better word, but when you listen to her speak, she really knows how to address issues, kudos to her X

Maybe Courtney needs to sit down and chat with someone like Piers Morgan about the gender scale. And explain it how she does.

I love an intellectual Katya moment and Courtney is full of insight so it was deep yet bouncy. Deep.. and yet bouncy. It feels really grounding hearing the strategy of stepping towards common ground.. actually, it feels like a great way to talk to my kids about things they repeat from douchey algorythmic KZbin shorts targeting them (and I'm thankful to say we have a good enough relationship to discuss them.. even if they're speaking from a destructive side). Sometimes I just don't have all the answers and that's okay. Learning, admitting that, and exploring together is really healthy. But that's aspirational when the tsunami of cortisol hits. I feel pressured to lay out a sick burn in verbal tweet form or Shorts style and it's just useless, lol. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk and I think Courtney has done Glod's work today lmao
