What I want to know: years ago I read an article talking about the founders and the huge mansion they bought in California (worth millions of dollars). After all this unethical and potentially illegal cluster of activities, do the founders just get to retire in said huge mansion and get a slap on the wrist from these lawsuits? I truly want to know this. I am not being “cute” or sarcastic; this is a genuine question. Thank you for all the info and your hard work, Isabella!!! 🤗

@@MissBeeeBeee honestly this is a great question. If they have enough $$ and if there’s an settlement they may just get a slap on the wrist like many people do. It’s truly upsetting. But that’s more than likely unless they’re not doing as good as we think financially. I’m not a professional in that area but with the patterns we see with horribly company owners getting away with things. They probably will

@@IsabellaLanter Exactly. Agreed. The way I see most of these things develop is infuriating. One example: I was very disappointed with the way the LulaRich documentary ended. If I remember correctly, they had to pay $5M and that was it. Five million dollars for them is what five dollars mean to me. That’s it?!! Doesn’t even count as a slap on the wrist. It’s more like “everything’s ok if you give us five bucks; is that ok with you??” 🙄

The problem with Morphe is they based their entire brand around influencers. Influencers come and go they don’t stay popular forever because most of them should have never been famous to begin with. Most of the influencers they were using started falling off and getting negative press. That is when their brand started to collapse.

The only thing I liked about my local Morphe was that the employees knew makeup. I don't know if they had good training or they just happened to hire people who were good at makeup but my morphe was really diverse and even employees with the complete opposite skin tone of mine could do a fantastic job of recommending colors that looked amazing on me (my local ulta seemed to only hire white, blonde women). I hope those employees are able to find new jobs they thrive in.

During the golden age of youtube makeup influencers, I bought so many damn eye shadow pallets because I got swept up in the hype and felt like i had to catch them all like pokemon. Now I have more eye shadow than one person could ever use, and I feel like an idiot for wasting money on all this stuff. I genuinely do love makeup and getting creative with my eye shadow looks, but the amount of makeup I have from the hyper consumerist era of mid 2010s youtube is outrageous.

Omg, I said something similar in my comment lol. I agree that the number of makeup products that were sold in the 2010s was absolutely wild and there was so much hype around them that people wanted to buy them all. Tbh I'm glad we've moved past it.

I agree, I started watching beauty influencers during that time to learn how to do my makeup and it always seemed like there was always one more primer, or setting powder, or brush set that would be the key to getting their perfect makeup looks. Imagine my surprise when I found out how common it was to digitally enhance your pictures/videos.

I want to add here that the products being "not safe for eyes," according to US law, companies have to indicate on the product that this is the case. However in other countries like the UK, they don't have as strict of laws as we do so they don't have to put that on the label. These products though are typically fine on the eyes. Robert Welsh has covered this topic in a video about Huda Beauty.
@dacianadays698
@dacianadays698 Жыл бұрын
This is a good point, having a product be safe for eyes (ie opthalmalgically tested, like eye drops) would be way more stringent then makeup that is to be worn ON the skin. (Like eyeshadow) I still can't wear eye makeup because my eyes are over sensitive and dumb, but I imagine most people would be ok.

Another reason I think makeup companies aren't doing well is that the, "buy all makeup products by x" hype is over. Throughout the entire 2010s people obsessed over makeup to an unhealthy amount (in my opinion. No shame because I did it too to an extent lol). There were so many makeup videos on KZbin, Instagram, and for a bit TikTok that it made people want to purchase more makeup. I mean we had celebrities pushing their products, constantly seeing full faces of makeup (which requires a lot of products hence needing to buy a lot), super creative makeup designs that were done all over a person's face/arms/body/etc., and a culture that promotes overconsumption. But recently we've gone away from that, and I think part of it is because of the pandemic. I've seen a rise in natural looks again and just everyone is exhausted from all the products being shoved down our throats and the time it takes to do a full face.
@irelandcook8298
@irelandcook8298 Жыл бұрын
I think everyone got sucked into the maximalist mindset because all we could do was shop online, and now a lot of people are seeing how harmful overconsumism is and that consumers will only keep their daily makeup uses versus having dozen of products. Plus the rise of skincare and how every brand or celebrity will come out with a skincare line (Kim K and Trisha Paytas for example) because it's the current trend
@jenna7437
@jenna7437 Жыл бұрын
@@irelandcook8298 That's true! I've seen a rise in celebrities and gurus saying skincare is more important than makeup. Which I don't necessarily hate because it's important to keep care of our skin, like using sunscreen often. However, I dislike how they all push 739248 steps in their routines and make their lines cost $$$$ when there are cheap dupes in drugstores. But I agree that we are seeing more celebrities focus on skincare now. Wonder what the next trend will be?

I never understood the hype over Morphe. Their eyeshadows are mediocre and have tons of fall-out. Their makeup brushes are comparable to Dollar Tree options.

Lol, hey, Dollar Tree had some great brushes at one point... They were like a Unicorn horn or some sht... They don't have the same ones anymore, but the eye shadow ones are still my favorite and I use them every single day! I'm just glad I was old enough to know better than to get caught up in hype and not waste my money on it. Because I would have easily been swept up in it and wasted much money if I was younger. I'm more sad that some great smaller, indie brands got pushed aside in that time, like Sugarpill or Make up Geek. And sadly, Make Up Geeks death blow was shut downs. I was super sad to hear her announce she was closing down last year. Loved loved Make Up Geek and that she didn't sell out. Nor did she mark up her prices to seem better... She was better, but at very affordable prices and that's what I also loved about it, lol! Sugarpill is still quietly going along, though. They just did a colab pallet W Trixie Matell & it's gorgeous. If it wasn't for Christmas just passing and time to pay those bills now, lol, I'd be grabbing that one for sure 😉

@@Em22-wtf I heard about those unicorn brushes, but never got to see them in person. Sorry, Dollar Tree! Lol My sister kept buying me Morphe individual brushes and brush sets for birthdays and Christmas. I always had to pick brush hairs off my face when I used them. The hair felt like textured plastic.....pretty much the opposite of what you want in a makeup brush. The eyeshadow fall-out was the killer for me. I spent more time cleaning up than applying makeup. I totally forgot about Makeup Geek. I remember she had some scandal too, but not anything huge. I can't remember what it was. That was years ago. I bought a couple of her eyeshadows and loved them.

Back in the big makeup boom I swear their palette quality was wayyy better, my selling point on them as a college student was the fact that they offered palettes with lots of color options for just $25-30. I also feel that I was lucky thought b/c I much prefer metallic shadows to matte colors and their metallics is really where their formulas weren't too shabby imo. However I bought another palette from them a year or two ago and yeah I had to return it it was so bad lol they DEF got mediocre so I never turned back after that

I was deeep into beautytube back in the day, bought Jeffree Star products at Morphe, but not actual Morphe-brand stuff. But then I changed industries (from music to an office job) and stopped wearing makeup out of laziness. Only last year did I rebuild a small full-face collection with 95% ColourPop. Morphe partnered with some CONTROVERSIAL folks and now they're paying for it.

@Aridana 💋 if you're in an "at will state", yes, they can just fire you with no warning and no reason; they just have to make sure to cover their bases so it doesn't look like they fired you for a discriminatory reason (gender, lgbtq status, etc). They'll have to pay out any PTO (paid time off, vacation time, sick time, etc) but any more than that is at the discretion of the company. It sounds like at Morphe some people got 2 weeks severance pay, which is likely the amount they would've made if they had worked for 2 weeks.

So true about Colourpop :( Morphe was also the first company that I really started to experiment with makeup with and in that 2016 era I really enjoyed the quality and price. However, I bought a new palette from them not too long ago and it was atrocious quality I had to return it. And Colourpop can be the same way, but you're right in that in the past year or two they've just exploded in quantity of releases and out of all those collabs or releases, they're lucky if one or two of them are somewhat decent. It truly is exhausting and no one needs that much makeup so idk how they're not constantly losing money on having so many lines and collections b/c they have to target such a small portion of people for each one since no one is going to buy ALL of it there's just no way. Obviously just poor business decisions from someone higher up and I'll be sad to see some of the last affordable brands go out like this, it was so avoidable

I also feel like with all the hype these big brands created, they completely drowned out and ultimately crushed the smaller, indie (and amazing) brands like Sugarpill & Make Up Geek. Not that they weren't popular in their own way, Sugarpill is still quietly out here, launching new stuff, but not as loudly with every make up chnl ever to breath on YT testing, reviewing, trying, etc.... Sugarpill just did a collab with Trixie Mattel, which kind of makes me nervous, lol, because I hope they don't start picking up where these other brands left off and start doing cheesy launches every week, lol! The pallet is gorgeous though.... And then there is Make Up Geek, who I was soooo bummed to learn closed up shop last year 😭 She stayed RELATIVELY small and away from the new launch every week model, she did get into a little drama here and there, but not bad.... I believe it was actually shut downs that did her company in, between shut downs, and trouble on the manufacturing end of things, not being able to get products needed, shipping being terrible the year before last... All those problems caused her to just close up shop. But at least she went out with her business in tact & not sunk after she sold it off, I think I'd have been even more sad to see that. Talk about fantastic, affordable mascara! I sticker up last yr, right after she announced Make Up Geek was done, everything would be marked down til it was gone and at $12 a tube, I have ONE unopened left and one that probably halfway through 😭 same with her eyeliner. I don't know what I'm going to do once those two are gone 🙁 But I feel like these big brands crushed the smaller ones out, and now the big ones are taking a hit... Maybe it's a good thing... Because I'm kind of excited to see what's next for the make up world. I feel it's been very BLAH for the last couple of years and we need some fresh new brands, new ideas, new SOMETHING...

I can say that I have been lucky with the two Jaclyn Hill pallets. I am not bragging with this, and reading further I discuss it. Granted, the first one, the blue and purple shimmers sucked. The second pallet I use almost every time I do my makeup. I haven't had that much of an issue with the palette. I still don't know if it's a product thing, a me thing, or what but no matter what I do or use...my left eye's outer corner is difficult to work with. It just never sticks in the crease area of the outer corner. I won't buy from any of these creators again, but I bought from most of these creators predrama. And I've kept their products because they've lasted. I've bought these products from Ulta or from someone's website. I can say that I have had here and there staining and irritation if I forget to take off my eyeshadow at the end of the night. So I can definitely understand how this has happened to this brand. I can understand why people have stopped buying these products. Like I said at the very beginning, I've been lucky. And I am happy of that. I am thankful that I hadn't spent my money and got the awful product quality or the reactions to the face that others have. I fully understand how people can feel from this. It's disheartening to hear. I am also upset that people were not told they no longer have a job. It's one thing to be fired for justified reasons bc of your actions. It's another to not be told your store is closed permanently and only finding out when you waste the gas and effort to show up and see it. This puts people in so much stress. They didn't get a chance to have another job in place before closing or at least start that process. They didn't get a chance to plan out their at home life before they closed. It is so shitty for a company to do this to their employees. Just forget the product problems for a second...a company that mistreats their employees are disgusting and it doesn't even matter if their products are good or not. Honestly, morphe caused their own issues and now they suffer the consequences...but now, it's not even just them that are suffering....also the poor employees are dragged into it too.

Quick note about the pressed pigment vs eyeshadow. Normally, the pigments are safe though they can cause some staining, and they are legal in the EU (which has stricter rules than the US). Anyone can have an allergic reaction to anything and you can develop an allergy to something you used to use regularly. Now I did hear of someone having a reaction to sketchy Mary Kay eyeshadow, so I would totally believe that there was a quality or contaminants issue separate from and in addition to the pigments. And I would also believe that they didn't label their red pigments well enough and people were shocked by staining. I have an UD palette and there is a divider clearly marking the pigments as separate from the regular eyeshadow, but I doubt Morphe went to that much effort. I haven't bought from Morphe since the Kathleen Lights collab palette (I honestly hated the quality and the color combos both - turns out I'm not a mauve person). I still have and use some brushes though. They're a pretty sketchy company imo.

Friends & I where talking about corps./ companies that seem to only concentrating on short term profits. Not even giving a 2nd thought to long term profits, not even a little bit. From their marketing, to the products, & to the way they treat their employees. To put in a short & simple term, for example no one, even hire ups, can stay or want to stay at one company for a long period of time. Companies know that the longer you are there the more the have to pay you. So as soon as you start rightfully so, wanting a raise, they can get rid of you & hire someone for alot less, & its a revolving door. So if you get a person who knows they are only going to stay for example 2 to 5 years. What they are are going to do, is only worry about the short term numbers while they are there. There is no insensitive or loyalty to even worry about long term. Why should they?? They know they are not going to be there, & the company itself doesn't have any loyalty to their employees. Doesn't matter how great you are at your job/career. This actually not something I am making up , there are studies on this. It's a Damme shame. I think this needs to change. Listen I might just sound like a cranky old person, but here is the thing, we all age. Therefore we all should think of our future. Yes, maybe you are young & might even think its fun , jumping from job to job to job. As you get older, you want to get paid for what you are worth, & have some type of stability in your life. Corp./ companies right now are all about short term profits. Again a Damme shame 😔

Great video! Loved hearing your thoughts on Morphe but I’ll definitely need you to make a video on Colourpop next 😂 The only thing I ever bought from Morphe is a handful of brushes. Before Morphe was HUGE, I bought some palettes similar to them from BH Cosmetics when I was in my earlier teens. I always enjoyed beauty gurus but never really fell into the trap of buying their recommendations but I know what I’ll actually use. I’m a pretty simple/ basic makeup wearer and don’t wear any crazy colors or use out there products. I’m also kinda of frugal so I would rather die than spend $45 on a mascara. I grew up on Walmart everything so I know that if I need/want anything that I could find something good at the drugstore. Like I said, I haven’t bought too much Morphe but I do enjoy some of Colourpop’s products. I use a handful things from their brand but nothing is a must have. I really hate how much they collab with creators and franchises because nothing is even exciting anymore. Everything has been done. It really seems like the brand lacks identity and purpose. The whole business needs to be gutted and restarted.

I got a morphe palette back when I was in college in 2015, during their beginning days and it was horrendous. It was the 35T and I remember KathleenLights and Jaclyn Hill both raving about it, and I saved all my money up to get it. The shades blended together, barely showed up when they did show up, and i couldn't even return it. I gave it to a friend who had the same thoughts and she threw it away. Morphe has never been good to me. I got the Jaclyn Hill palette and tried it for my wedding makeup and had to fix my eyeshadow with a secondary palette.

I feel like we’re gonna see some lawsuits come to the surface, especially after how they handled letting their staff know they wouldn’t have a job. They had a chokehold on the beauty community for it being so cheap but I remember the makeup being horrible and a waste. The brushes were also inconsistent- some completely fell apart in weeks and some have held up for the 5-6 years I’ve had them. Even recently I picked up a Morphe2 product similar to what Kaja does, but the makeup is still massively mediocre

I still use a few of my Morphe brushes. They had several that were really good. I don’t have one specific brand of brushes that I prefer. I like Sigma, Wayne Goss and for foundation my favorite brush is It Cosmetics Love is Foundation Brush. I buy 2 every year when they release it. It’s a yearly LTO brush and it applies foundation like a dream. I feel so bad for the employees. I see that a few people already addressed the pressed pigments issue, so I won’t repeat the comment. Take care everyone!

I got into makeup in 2020, so Morphe was on a decline and I never really got the urge to get their palettes except for like 3 in totally due to the color story. I was thinking about getting the 2 Jacklyn palettes, the pink one was just released and I kept on hearing good things about the 1st, but then YTers were talking about the reformulation in the 1st one and it just kept on going down hill from there. I do have 1 glitter/shimmer applicator that's Morphe's because I was looking something like it exactly, and it's okay. I wanted to try it because I heard that those types of brushes were meant for shimmers and it didn't work for me. I don't even know where that brush is atm, and I'm not too sad if I don't find it again.

I loved your video and perspective, but one thing I will personally say is that the downfall of Morphe isn't surprising whatsoever. Stephanie Nicole did a brilliant in-depth video on Morphe and talked about how they're little more than a private labelled makeup brand that invested in influencers and collaborations over quality makeup products. There's no need to invest in quality when the influencers and hype sell the makeup for you. (Boy, I miss Stephanie but respect her choice to kinda just ditch KZbin for good.) Anyways, time went on, Dramageddon happened, the pandemic happened, and I feel like everyone changed their interests. Why invest in Morphe when reputable drugstore brands are delivering better quality at a cheaper price? Why do we need a million makeup palettes when we really only need one or two really good ones that we can wear for everything? I'm honestly glad we got out of the consumerism hype and we're focused on just investing in quality products that work with everything. Let's invest that same energy toward fashion!

When it comes to pressed pigments, those disclaimers are required to do it because the ingredients that make it vegan is not approved for the eye by the FDA, but is approved for the eye by other regulatory authorities like the E.U. I work in FDA compliance, and when it comes to approving ingredients, Cosmetics are kind of on the bottom of the priority list, as pharmaceuticals, supplements, food, medical devices.. those tend to be priority, and so they are slow to keep up with other countries when it comes to cosmetic ingredients.

I agree it sucks for the employees but I’m sorry no one is ever informed ahead of time they are being laid off. The majority of the time, you get to your job in the morning and are shortly after told you are being let go and pack your stuff and leave, with no severance…it’s just simply the way businesses operate whether it’s fair or not. As Jen Luv always says business are not people

In Australia Morphe is sold through Mecca and the mark up on some of their products is ridiculous, especially when the quality is just not there. I can easily buy drug store products that are better quality for the same price and I'm sure in the states where brands like Milani, essence and wet and wild are easier and cheaper to purchase, why would you spend $25 for a sub par blush. Or $95 AUD for the Morphe x Ariel Signature face brush set?!

Morphe most definitely lost a lot of customers or potential customers when they kept selling the James Charles palette instead of just throwing it and writing it out as a mistake, they would have lost less throwing out the inventory than they did continuing the sale. As for the pressed pigment thing, this is liter a USA FDA thing, the FDA is very behind on pigments being safe. These are all pigments 100% safe around the world but in the USA. Other brands are currently in hot water over the same thing.

Like others in the comments, I never understood Morphe. I tried one of their palettes and the eyeshadows didn't blend and colour payoff wasn't great. Compared to other budget brands like Revolution Beauty, they were mediocre at best. The palettes so so overpriced for something that was screenprinted generic mass produced China make. It just is an indication as how bad consumer culture and hype is.
