The time to fight for the future of animation has finally arrived as although the Hollywood strikes have come to an end, it seems like studios are already preparing for the impending animation strike by destroying the current landscape. Between layoffs at places like Dreamworks and Avatar Studios, the outsourcing even more jobs, cancelled movie releases like Coyote vs Acme and the rise of AI Animation (alongside Disney's hypocrisy) things are getting dire fast. So sit down and listen up as we run through some of the recent heinous hijinks going on in the animation industry.

Hollywood is burning down and there's no salvation anymore, until a miracle happens and they get back caring about the beauty of art, which looks like we're lightyears away for that happen. Become an animator in the US industry was my big childhood dream, now it sounds like a nightmare. So I'm here with the thousands and thousands of online artists/animators building our own indie industry. Yes, it's a massive sacrifice and most of us are an one-person studio, but the passion and dedication keep us moving forward to, who knows, make a huge hit. Animation is cinema and we need more support than ever.

The animation model that Tartakovsky and McCracken have is actually excellent and should become more commonplace. By hiring artists to do more than one thing you're able to hire them full time and give them benefits. There being basically no full time jobs in animation is a huge issue and it actively imprisons animation inside of California. Full-time, stable jobs are the only way animation will ever spread out of California.
@EtanChamare
@EtanChamare 5 ай бұрын
@@maddox121 yes, but I thinking more of spread out of California to the rest of the US. It's extremely difficult to attract talent to a place where talent doesn't already exist if you can't promise them job stability. If we want to decentralize animation we need to offer full time jobs, and whether some people like it or not, a full time job would require that some artists do more than one thing.

With you ending on the note of supporting indie animation, I really think there needs to be a lot more conversation on how - even assuming it'll never replace studio work full stop - we can help actually make it at least a little more viable and sustainable. I would happily help lobby to make grants and subsidies become more of a thing for indie creators. Maybe even establish a dedicated fund with the explicit purpose to funnel money into promising looking projects. It may not be THE future, but there's definitely A future.

Indie animation is a safe and friendly place for animators. Plus, there’s a market gap. High end studios continue to disrespect animation, so animators will go to places where the leaders actually appreciate animation. Currently, the only indie animation distributor is glitch productions, But when people notice the severe lack of studios on indie animation and how viable it is currently, we’ll be seeing more indie distributors show up. It will be like indie versions of Warner and dreamworks etc

A silver lining for all this is we sem to be entering the golden age of indie animation. Between megastudios like Disney churning out bland sludge and hoping the brand name is enough to get people's money, to companies like Netflix axing their animation departments because "animation is for kids who have no money," it really seems like audiences have had enough and are turning towards small, independent creators to scratch that itch. The Hellaverse, Lackadaisy, Digital Circus, Murder Drones and more...I haven't seen such a plethora of popular animated shows since the golden age of Nickelodeon and CN in the early 2000s, and it's all coming from these passionate artists who understand that people will open their hearts and their wallets to shows that focus on being *good* rather than ticking a bunch of corporate check boxes.

When news broke that it was being shuttered I genuinely felt it as a deterrent to follow animation as a career. Hearing companies write animated and live-action show/movies off for taxes is so frustrating to me. If Scooby, Batgirl, and Cayote v Acme were released both in theaters and on streaming, they would have made so much more money then just writting it off. Inside Job and Infinity Train have a cult following, so many people would have brought merch, soundtracks, and box sets. And for companies that are paying their CEOs billions of dollars, if they wanted to "save money" cut that pay down. The CEOs are not the ones in the trenchs working on Animation. And the ones who used to work in production should be ashamed that they sold out their fellow creatives for a quick pay day.

spongefox is a cartoonist and animator and deserves to not kill cartoons but hollywood is still destroying animation. it's a theory that animators can find a way to find another animation studio in california that they might ignore the AI, but worse, hollywood might invade ChatGPT And Stable Diffusion Models that might kill animation FOREVER. This needs to stop now, animation never dies in north america.

I’m really glad people are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. For a few years now, all I’ve heard was that the state of animation is horrible and companies are so greedy, but they said that as if nothing could be done about it. I’m so happy people are finally starting to take action now, that’s what I’ve been trying to get them to do since this thing started. This is why indie animation is on the rise. People get to post their works and passions online to the world without the stupid businessmen that don’t give a damn running the show, whilst getting lots of support from the comments and indie production studios like glitch. Trust me, if this keeps up, 2024 will be the year of animation.

While I very excited for what Indie Animation (Vivzie-Pop, Lackadaisy and Glitch's Projects) has in store, I am very afraid that it may burn out and die rather quickly if animation in general starts to go under, which this video has very clearly demonstrated is already happening. Animators are in a constant state of NO work or Overworked and it's become really heartbreaking to see things like this happen when its clear people still have ideas and stories they would like to tell through an animated medium. Animation has BY FAR the most potential of any medium due to just how detached from reality it is, and yet we get to see such a small subsection of it with how many fucking shows get canned before they ever hit their stride. Inside Job's Cancellation hit me really hard and I am still holding out for it to be picked back up at some point even though I know by now that it's a total pipe dream. Depending on how things go from this point forward, we may be entering a renaissance of Indie animation and smaller creator sticking up for the rights they deserve, or a dark age where all the creative projects fizzle out within a few years, and with the exception of a couple projects that are from already established IP's the only true new content we get is the serailized slop like modern family guy or simpsons that just makes money on recognition alone. I am not an Animator myself, but my brother is an artist with his talents being primarily in the likes of character design and I worry for him and anyone else in an even remotely similar position right now because Animation is a total hellscape. I pray that Indie animation really takes off in a way none of us expect, as series like Lackdaisy's Funding campaign show that people are always willing to chip in if it means they get quality animation. I'm glad disney is getting so much backlash as of late because they fucking deserve it, and while this video is primarily going over how much it sucks to work in animation right now, it's also just that a lot of what IS coming out is the same garbage we've gotten used to for the last 5 years or so. It falls squarely on the corporate suits who only greenlight what is guaranteed to make them money which is just disgusting even though lots of them have plenty of capital to spare but would rather buy a 3rd golden plated car than fund something which will actually move people.

I went to school for film & television production, (with a double degree in advertising as backup!) and my goal has been to work in animation production. I’m not an artist, but I would love to work in production management. I have a lot under my belt in production, but I have yet to break into the animation industry. I’ve joined and volunteered for animation groups, networked with people in the industry, and overall have had solid live-action production experience. I’ve had zero luck of getting animation in my 2.5 years of post-grad life. And seeing how the state of the industry is these days, my hope slowly fades💔 It really is my dream, but with the layoffs and outsourcing and blatant disrespect, I don’t know if I should continue chasing this goal…

It's not her fault. It's her fans that never knew when to shut the fuck up. I can't ignore it when it's everyone at every corner saying the same thing. With her new show becoming Amazon Primes new gold child it sets my fear definitely that I'll never become an animator and my series will never become a reality.

I'm going to be blunt, but that's only because I care. If the writers' and actors' strikes are anything to go by, the animation strike is just going to mean more cancelations, lay-offs, and outsourcing. Studios have already said that they're going to be greenlighting less projects. Even if the Guild somehow gets everything they ask for, that's still going to mean less jobs.

I want animation to live. I never new until a scary time period that I wanted to create an original story but inspired by amazing Disney shows. Gravity Falls, Amphibia, and the mega show The Owl House. I grew up on cartoons man. Animation is a part of me, and I nowadays want to see an animated series multiple times then a live action stuff. But I am picky on what I watch tho. I still want animation to live and when I first heard of this struggle, I was so terrified because something I wanted to do. To tell a story, may not becomea reality. It is the worst to be hearing such struggles, and I may not be an animator or have the skills. But this still hurts me. I wish that I could be living in a world where everything was fine and maybe that things will get better. But that gets shot down a lot as I grow up. I wish there was a way I could help. All I do is post stuff I like, and it's messy. But I make what I love and post it. I wanted to be given the option to make a series of my own characters in like a couple of years. Whether it's an independent animated series worked by professionals or people full of heart. I want to see people make series full of hearts. I'm on the side of people making Indie animation. I want them to have better pay, better work hours, better conditions, and people who understand that animation production takes time. Please be respectful, I may not be interested in every indie animation there is but I love how it's about a team trying to make there story come to life. I love it all! Indie is amazing and support any indie show you want to see thrive. Also help out with the earth here and there (I know that it's not related to te topic but still, needed to be said.) Thanks you AwestruckVox for informing the public but also saying that there is hope still. And I am hoping and praying that we will all get through this hard time. P.s. To those that read this comment through, first of thanks. Out of all the problems there is out there, this is the one that makes me mad and afraid. Ever since I was 12, I would make a collage of some of my favorite characters growing up as they kept me happy when things like school got on my nerves. I still have a small collage that I want to expand on later. These characters have given us solitude from real-world problems, talked subtly about real-world problems in a light that makes it easier to approach and learn more about, so we can understand who we are as people. These grueling yet informative years regarding the state of the medium, to the point that I - a yearning animated storyteller - has it on my mind daily, have constantly proven to me that executives don’t care about people trying to find works of fiction they can relate to. They’d rather make substance with little-to-no passion or substance or, even worse, paints people of certain communities or minorities in a bad light when they market their projects as a way to represent them. (It’s not that most of hate representation, we just hate when you do it poorly!) If I’ve learned anything the past couple years, working independently - while incredibly arduous - would be a much better decision for me. Among all of KZbin’s problems, they are one of the few places people can go to where they can find illustrated projects that can be what they can be. And in the case of Vivziepop, it’s amazing that Hazbin Hotel is on Prime (hopefully, the service treats it good). That kinda work can go a long way. I am once again that these executives are thrown out and never brought back into the entertainment industry again. I do not wish the staff who put their blood, sweat, and tears into projects that won’t see the light of day. Pay your damn writers. Respect the process. Stop denying that animation is strictly for kids after all the examples shown these past decade. You’re only making yourself look idiotic, which you probably are.

People tend to forget that indie games took a long time to reach their current status. In my opinion, indie animation is making progress in the same way that indie games did in the past, and one major obstacle is that they lack a platform similar to Steam where they can distribute their shows and movies like indie games do. So if we get something like Steam for indie animation then the ball will start to roll at least faster than it already is.

Amazing video and very well said. Awareness is key as a lot of people were cheering that a child was sourced cheaply to help with spiderverse 2 animation (using plugins made by someone else) under the guise that a young artist was “fulfilling their dreams”. They were being taken advantage of by a studio trying to cut costs and by the way using those Lego Meccabrick plugins for commercial use is illegal.
