It's really gonna come down to software. Apple's vertical integration and, let's be honest, fanatical core developer community meant that tons of core apps made the transition quickly. Rosetta 2 was also fantastic at plugging the holes in the interim. Windows will need something as good, if not better, than Rosetta 2 right from the get go, because their market is much more diverse. It'll take a lot longer to get a much larger sea of software ported over, and there will almost certainly be tons of pockets of niche software that will never make it over at all. I'm definitely pulling for an XPS 13 that can go toe to toe with an M3 MacBook Air though, or a gaming/workstation laptop that's finally useful away from the wall. It'd be great to have choice again.

That's not even the important thing, the important thing is I can seamlessly move to my iPad, answer texts from my MacBook, and apps link through iCloud flawlessly. I have a digital rolodex hitting close to 1200 people. Apple contacts handles this flawlessly, and I depend on this heavily to not get screwed up or I lose money. Don't' get me wrong, I tried to make windows + Samsung Android work, and still, to this day, it's a patched up mess. My workflow with MacBook, iPad/iPhone cannot be touched even with the excellent windows office suite on a PC. Outlook for Mac has come a long way (but don't do what I did and expect it to work with your contacts without completely screwing them up.) If everyone would stop with the "omgzors this non mainstream, lack of apps hardware will possibly run %20 faster than Apple's best, it's time to forget Apple," that would be great. Thanks.

It's not just the raw CPU that matters, all the specialized chiplets around like neural and media engines make the difference. In the olden days, you saw it with the Amiga with specialized chips vs higher powered Atari ST and Apple. Amiga ran circles around because the specialized chips took care of the heavy lifting and ultimately resulted in better overall performance and capabilities. On top of it, you compare an unreleased chip against a released one, the real litmus test will be how it will compare to the next gen aka M3.

The problem is ARM has really good support on MacOS and Linux distros like ARCH and Debian but ARM for Windows is a total mess so this chip could be 2 times more powerful than Apple's chips and will still underdeliver simply because the software isn't there. You won't be able to install a Linux distro on those machines either since the UEFI will be locked to the Windows 11 OS and a simple install of Linux won't be possible. While Windows is pretty terrible on ARM so until Qualcomm can open up the chip to allow things like Linux or the BSD's it will be underwhelming for sure.

The transition for Mac users was easy and fast and with no path to continue with Intel. It was practically all big upsides and no downsides to upgrade and this was clear early with the first M1s that it was going to work. For PC users, I think Intel and AMD will retain X86 options until others like Qualcomm and nVidia blaze the ARM trail and then AMD and Intel will come on board with their own ARM. Intel and AMD will be responding and competing to that competition much more than from Apple. It will take longer and it will require influencers to demonstrate advantages starting with laptops and high performance gaming small quiet Windows PCs after that. Lower prices will also be very helpful. I think the speed of adoption to ARM is going to depend on how well ARM can run X86 software for Windows users much more and it will take Intel and AMD a bit longer to make it a compelling advantage. Now let's see how well my predictions age.

It isn’t just about power. One of Apple’s strengths is the length of time they continue to support their products. For example I have a 2017 model iPad Pro, which runs the latest version of iPadOS (17.0.1). My wife has an iMac, purchased at around the same time, which still runs well and the software is regularly updated. Compare that with some of the products that rely on other systems. The other strong point is that when Apple puts out an update, it’s available to users without having to wait for a hardware manufacturer or telco to push out an update.

Finally more ARM chips, ready for more support for ARM on linux as well. Great first step for Qualcomm, seems their new chip is roughly equivalent to a M2 Pro all things considered (losing in single core and maybe NPU) and able to include dGPU's is amazing. Also interesting is the fact that it appears that the MS/QC exclusivity deal expires sometime in late 2024-2025 seeing as how AMD/NVIDIA are prepping ARM chips for then. Also hope this means we will see Windows 11 ARM running bare metal on Apple Silicon by then as well.

Consumers are demanding Windows on ARM? Seriously? Says who? Most consumers want a laptop that lasts as long as possible, is that what you mean?

If Intel and AMD didn’t join forces to create their own ARM based Architecture together and shared SOC IPs Nobody would be able to stop Nvidia!! If intel kept their ego AMD still have Qualcomm to join forces with and head nearer to their objectives.

ARM or not. Windows is still a nagging child as it was when it was introduced. Windows is fast food computing.

Not even yesterday, the new SD doesnt even beat the M2 Pro even with 4 more pcores and 50W TDP(vs 40W M2 Pro). Probably is a high binned chip also, so its probably not even that cheaper

Consumers aren’t demanding ARM based hardware or software. The technoratti is. Consumers just want performance, flexibility and good pricing.

Don't forget - MacOS itself is one of the biggest selling points for the Mac. Also the semi-closed ecosystem just means it's less open to viruses and enforces better development practices. Given what I do with music production and video, the M2 Max I just bought will last for many, many years.
@fidelisitor8953 Жыл бұрын
"MacOS itself is one of the biggest selling points for the Mac" - yet over 90% of PCs are running windows. Most people prefer windows for it's versatility and compatibility so majority of individuals and businesses use windows over mac os. Your career path is a minority that better suites macos.
@ckatheman Жыл бұрын
@@fidelisitor8953 I think it’s more that folks just don’t have experience with it because Windows has been so dominant in business and gaming. What’s happening now though, with the advent of the M series, is people are getting MacBooks in larger numbers for general purpose use, nothing to do with career paths.
@oh-noe Жыл бұрын
@@fidelisitor8953 you didn’t challenge anything he said. He said that macOS is one of the biggest selling points of a Mac, hence Mac users won’t really care much about what happens on the windows side of the market, because it’s not their preferred os. Windows is also highly used not only because of choice. Apple doesn’t have any cheap entry level computers. If you want a cheap computer or laptop windows is your only option. For the massive gaming community you don’t have a choice either, as macOS is not designed for playing games

As someone who owns and uses Mac and Windows on a daily… I’m glad the competition is strong. In the 90’s I had two SGI machines (Octane and Indy). The Octane was $89K and the Indy $42K. That’s $190K and $88K in today’s money.

The thing is, everyone who got apple silicon is supported by apple apps. While windows arm is barely used and doesn’t have a lot of the things since it was released a decade ago that apple already has. Windows developers would not have to support x86 and a tiny group who uses arm. What was once a disadvantage, apples rigid control, has become its biggest advantage in apple silicons success. Meanwhile windows has way way way to many hardware and software suppliers who won’t move over and support a tiny market in hopes it grows

Yes. I went from Windows to Linux then needed light portable computing device with touch and Linux fell behind (flexibility became a problem). Moved to Windows On Arm (WOA) touch device and it was poor integration. Moved next device to iPad M1 / Mac M1 and it's brilliant integration and quality: * Hardware * OS * Apps * Ecosystem Windows has so many annoying issues at this time with Arm. I can run Windows on Arm or Linux inside MacOS also. Only area that now counts is Gaming on Windows so have an old Desktop PC for that. Some annoying areas with Apple: 1. Price is higher ie "It costs an Arm and a leg..." hehe... 2. Their software delivery is very prescriptive and restrictive whereas Linux is very curated by the user choice But overall the sheer quality of integration means the devices are excellent and work and that means get out of the way of using them to do useful things using them.

No bad news for Apple silicon customers. As you said, competition is good. Apple has perfected the concept of platform economy, chip competition alone won’t make a lot of difference. I hate having to use a windows laptop for work. All is slow and annoying…

I have a 12cpu/18gpu core M3 Pro. It is stupidly fast. I am running ARM Windows in Parallels, and have loaded some incredibly heavy software onto it. It doesn’t skip a beat while staying cool and not eating through battery! I’m extremely excited to see what the competition brings to the table, because ARM is clearly the way forward.

About windows for arm. I purchased Microsoft’s first computer (Surface) with an Arm processor and Arm based windows 8 in around 2012. I promised I would never purchase another computer from Microsoft (hardware) as a couple years after I purchased the surface, they stopped support for it and all the developers dropped and new software development for it like a hot rock. This Arm for windows will never amount to anything and the first time Microsoft sees a dip in sales it will become another dinosaur piece of hardware that will forever be worthless… never purchase any hardware from Microsoft!

As a non-fanboi of Apple, but still a pretty solid user, I use Macs and iPhones because they run macOS and iOS, not because of some silly performance numbers. Having a competitive chip maker with better performance would do next to nothing to my choice of sticking with Apple.

Apple locking their chips to their platforms is going to what ultimately limits success there. I think it would be cool if they allowed other companies to use their chips inside their products, but that is highly unlikely.
@bruxi78230 Жыл бұрын
Actually it's just the opposite. They are massively successful by being the only tech company that is integrated. All of their far less successful tech brethren are modular. Modularity means that the companies can't do anything to differentiate their products. Why would Apple spend billions of dollars on their silicon and then sell it to some other bozo company that could theoretically steal away customers? Apple will continue to develop differentiated products and control the customer experience. As recently as July Apple was a 3 trillion dollar company, it ain't broke and there is nothing to fix.
