The dub kinda fumbles it, but it's implied Goku died (or became something else) after he was seemingly killed last episode, and it's something Vegeta and Piccolo pick up on. In the original, Vegeta never asks if he's going off to get special training, he just says something along the lines of "wait, are you..?", before Goku shushes him. Piccolo also uses the "are you..?" line when he sees him, and Shenron tells Goku "it's time to go" instead of asking whether he wants to join him or not.

Apparently the ending of Goku is similar to that of Buddhist mythology. Where the enlightened one travels to heaven on a Dragon. And its made plane that Goku knws that it was his time when shenron asked him to come along. It was if goku had already passed on.

GT was a better dragonball series than people give it credit for. GT still had the best ending in the entire franchise and felt like an actual ending to the story of the dragonballs. The characters lose access to the dragonballs for a time, and they have to live the rest of their lives without the dragonballs being their way to clean up their messes. It's also nice to see 100 years into the future to see the future generation of saiyans. Plus, Goku appears as an adult to say one final time to say goodbye in the story. Nice to see Goku seen as a legendary hero after the 100 year timeskip. Hopefully there will be a review of the GT special a Hero's legacy, which tells the story of Goku Jr.

There is something about this ending, real sense of finality which makes it very sad, but why it works so well and makes me emotional no matter how many times I see it. The music, the fact that all of our main characters outside of Pan are dead (even the ones that are young during this same episode like Goten and Trunks), and the narrators final words. The fact that the story was actually over for good after so many impactful moments theoughout the series, and we see this guy Goku smile at us for a final time, before ascending to somewhere none of us have any clue about, and never will. Many have said it here in the comments and I’ll say it again. This is the ultimate ending of the Dragon Ball series, as Super barely had a proper ending, and Z’s ending lacked true finality.

I've always liked the scene of Goku watching the tournament. He finally got to see the world as it should be: at peace, with martial arts as just a sport because there are no more villains to be defeated. And I like to think that the announcer is the very same one as from Dragonball, making DB / DBZ / DBGT the saga of the announcer.

The last part of the series takes place 100 years after GT, and the Goku we see at the end actually isn't just Goku who grew older again, cause when you think about it, Goku wasn't much younger than Pan, and even if he went back to being 12 from like, even 62 or something, he'd probably have grown into an Old man by the time the 100 years have passed. So, when it comes to what happened to him... nobody actually knows. There's theories all over the place, and the most believable one imo is that he fused with the Dragon Balls and became the Dragon God himself or something. Anyways, another little interesting thing is that apparently, GT wasn't origianally supposed to end with 64 episodes. From what I've heard they had more planned, and idk if the version featured this happening too or not, but makes you think where it might've gone.

He ascended to a higher level of existence and he got SOME level of wish granting power , that much is clear not just a theory , since he's shown to be there but not there , in the middle of his conversation with Goku jr. when he was explaining he has to collect all seven dragon balls to make a wish and not just one that he had at the time , suddenly Pan and his friend came back all healthy and Goku disappeared , and even after disappearing he talked to Goku jr. saying something like " it wasn't the dragon ball it was your effort " . So yeah , the series intends it to be somewhat vague but give an idea of what this is .

It was that wish that made the entire universe willingly give him the energy needed whilst also giving him more stamina and durability against Omega's blasts. Plus he granted a few simple wishes to himself as well in the form of meeting Krillin and Piccolo. He probably got this power the moment he promised to not use Shenron ever again to protect others... In turn, because Goku meant it honestly, shenron gave Goku that power as thanks for both allowing him freedom as well as defeating the shadow dragons for him. Im sure the earth had other conflicts in the 100 years since... But Goku probably helped in his new capacity and played a role similar to Shenron instead of straight up fighting.

In my honest opinion I like the English version better because it’s like more of an ending mixed with throwbacks to all of the moments throughout the main characters life. Japanese version sounds cool but it didn’t fit well.

If he died he couldn't finish Omega , he even said " i won't die just yet " before finishing Omega . He could've been dead after it cuz you see Shenron's eyes blip as he does when granting a wish and Goku gets back up .

Here's something one of the main writers for GT said in an interview: To be honest, in GT episode 63, just before the final episode, a big change comes over Goku. Those who watched carefully might have noticed, but… In that episode, Goku, who takes Omega Shenron‘s attack, sinks to the bottom of a deep hole. That is the turning point. Afterward, Goku still continues the battle, but what’s different from before is that he’s cloaked in an aura that won’t let any attack near him. It might be that he died there, or it might be that he became something else entirely. I’ll leave that decision to the imaginations of everyone who watched. However, the Goku up to that point that everyone knows clearly does not appear after that. In the world of Dragon Ball, Goku had already died multiple times, and up till then, each time he appeared with a halo over his head. However, I didn’t want to go with the usual concept of, “even when he dies, he comes right back to life”. I wanted the viewers to picture “death” in that way, and feel a sadness close to it in reality. So I had a “change” come over Goku. And then after that, once he defeats Omega Shenron and grants the final wish, Goku goes right off with Shenron and the Dragon Balls, to somewhere that people definitely can’t get to. While wishing that people will be able to get by on their own strength in a world without the Dragon Balls. And Vegeta is the only one who notices where he’s headed. Except, I personally go ahead and imagine… that Goku might unexpectedly show up, just at Chi-Chi’s, from time to time. Yes, unexpectedly….

After this a fan made their own series called Dragon Ball AF. It was a manga that continued the story after GT, but before the final time skip of the episode. The man who made the manga, Toyotaro, was actually hired to work on the Dragon Ball Super manga because of how close to Toriyama's art style he can draw. He is one of the main guys in the making of Dragon Ball Super, for better or for worse (decide after you watch Super, but remember the manga is a bit different). There are some fan made clips of Dragon Ball AF scenes if you want to see those.

Lol the ending kinda like the Cell or Buu saga is both a send-off for the fans and Goku ascending to divinity like Son Wukong does in Journey to the West, which is the biggest inspiration for Dragon Ball alongside Superman and Star Wars to a smaller degree. It's a common them in Buddhist/Taoist philosophy, after you do your work on Earth you ascend and become more than human joining with the universe after death / attaining enlightenment. It's just not something that would translate well to an American audience so they dubbed it without explicitly saying that's what's happening. Essentially all of the "send-offs" (DBZ was supposed to end in the Cell Arc before Toriyama chost to do Buu) are doing the same thing, this was just the most definitive one.

Terrible to see young kids become Super Saiyan again(just as Goten and Trunks) after it was always a legend story for Vegeta and took so much training, pain etc for Goku to become one against Frieza and als the prince of all saiyans Vegeta did so much effort. Kids becoming super saiyans like it means nothing all the time really takes away how special it once was.

I always hated that. It's supposed to be "Legendary" but damn near every Saiyan attains it and it seems like the majority got it with almost none of the struggle that Goku had to overcome for it. I won't even comment on what Super does with the "Legendary" transformation. When you think about it, it was almost bound to happen once the franchise became the All Saiyan All The Time Bonanza. Everyone else gets put on the back burner until they essentially drop off entirely. It's why it bothers me that DBZ took the twist from OG DB being heavily influenced by Sun Wukong in Journey to the West to DBZ being about Space Alien Warriors.

And it's natural , it's rather a good thing that the younger generations are doing better than the older ones did at their age , it's progression , isn't that the point of passing down something ? That where you stop someone else can take it to a greater height without spending all their time and energy in just reaching the same level you did? Isn't that a great thing that your achievement lives on in someone else having a chance to contribute towards something even greater ? They'll get their own struggles which will teach them about pain and loss , it doesn't have to happen the exact same way at the exact same time with all the generations , just be happy that they got this level of potential as gifts from their great ancestors .
