I could see Dominique’s amazing skills from the video, very pretty! Difficult decision Matt but a good one I think. I had a similar thing with a horse; but mental issues about the work. He was sold to someone who loves him soooo much and he’s living his best life, so that ended really well. I’m sure it will be the same for you and sureno. Thank you for sharing 🤗

I’m interested in him I live in America and I’ve watched his story ever since you got him. I can give him the home you want him to have. He’s such a wonderful horse. I just don’t know money wise. Im going through a really tough time in my life and I’ve been looking for a horse to get me through it. To go on light rides with and help my bareback skills. I would love to help you out you can come visit him whenever you would like. I’ll keep in touch with you and give you updates on him. But I would definitely love to try and buy him.

He was purchased because he was a "huge stallion" by a little peacock who wanted to look impressive and sexy riding him. I am only sorry for the horse, not that social climber who is about to get rid of him. I can only hope he moves on to live someplace safe and loving...as greedy and self-centered as his owner in this video is, that seems unlikely if the money for his sale is good enough.

@@catherinemurawski9512 Hi, I have been exactly in this situation. I was forced to rehome two ponies of mine because one of them had health issues that I wasn't able to properly care for at the time. I don´t think there is anything wrong with it, even the opposite, I think Matts´s decision to find him a new home is brave and completely reasonable. What I got an issue with is irresponsible breeding. Especially with Iberian horses, breeders are ruthless, since many buyers get blinded by their beauty and movements. The focus on breeding healthy horses is secondary (not just the case for Lusitanos and PREs, but very common here), which results in situations like this one. Hence I do not think it would be responsible and fair of Matt to sell this stallion for breeding purposes.

@@catherinemurawski9512 he literally brought the horse because he's huge and he would look good riding him. If he truely cared about the horse he would give him a forever home with himself! Everyone knows heaps of horses that's get sold end up going to horrible places. The happy home he once knew is now gone because he can't compete.. as soon as the horse starts having health problems Matt gives up on him. But the horse gave so much to Matt for what? To be given up on. It's heartbreaking. He wants to sell him to breed but that's only going to make more horses possibly in the same situation. He chose a huge horse for its breed an expected nothing to go wrong. But now that it has he wants to sell him to make more horses possibly the same? No. He should geld him and keep hin so he can rest and relax and that will be the best life for him. Where he's safe an Happy. He said himself that he has room for him but doesn't think he's the right fit. That's because he's not healthy possibly due to his size. You can't expect to buy and animal and just give up on it because it's not healthy. It's heartbreaking

Matt, Sureno is such a beautiful soul with a gentle nature who aims to please. I too am so disappointed you're selling him. You moved Chase from Australia to be with you, then you allowed him to live his life on his terms, no pressure. So why not the same devotion for Sureno? As soon as you mentioned you were looking to buy another horse, and all news on Sureno had gone quiet, I knew this was going to happen. You are clearly financially stable. You have a large property so you could build a stable and keep him at home with you. He could be used as a model for your sponsers. Just because he isn't 'up to par' doesn't mean it should be the end of the road for you and him. Lease him out to someone. Let him still be part of your life. He deserves it. This is a beautifully shot video yes, but the message behind it is anything but. I miss the fun videos you always used to do, the silly ones. But now it just seems to be all about money and looking for the next best horse. This isn't the only critical message, there are hundreds saying the same thing. So very sad for such a wonderful horse.

This is just an opinion, not meant as criticism. Sureno would be better off gelded and kept as an ordinary riding horse. It's likely his hormones not helping him stay sound, a little buck and squeal for the ladies and he'll be back in the same situation. Why breed from a horse that is not physically up to the rigours of competition? There are millions and millions of horses bred every year, the world will not be any the less with one less not quite up to it stallion. He will be happier and able to live in company like horses are meant to. Take it from me, I've been spayed in my older years, and you really don't miss hormones once they're gone!

In the end of the day, this is the same thing almost all horseowners do. When the horse can't perform anymore due to injuries, they get rid if it. You can make a video with some lovely music, but that won't change it, it remains what it is. Buying a horse is expensive, but keeping a horse for the rest of his life costs a hell of a lot more. By that logic no horse should be sold ever. Look, buying a horse is expensive, the maintenance costs even more, especially with regular vet visits. Soreno will be better off in a nice home with some easy riding or ground work or something than just staying at matts stable with nothing to do. So why would he keep him at his stable, where theres not enough space, due to the fact that he bought a horse with which he can actually do the work he wanted to do with soreno? Why would he pay for him if he can't really do anything with him? If you retire a horse in his situation and pay for it thats nice of you, you shouldn't be required to and it's not always the best way. If he sells him to a new owner and makes sure that its a good home for him, both of them will be a lot better off, than if he kept him and just left him in the field or something without anything to do.

Realistically, unless there have been medical grounds there's no reason why he couldn't. I wish I could agree with this. It's not a matter of not having the means to care for him and provide him a solid home the rest of his life. They both have money and could set him up for the rest of his life with them. Adding on to to stable is nothing. Geld him and keep him home because it seems the life of a breeding horse isn't all that great either. This is being treated as a business transaction, more money to be made. Too many people want to move on with their lives when something no longer serves them. This is not a commendable thing. This happens way too often when it comes to animals. Your life changes and grows with your animals, it shouldnt change and grow out of them, not when true love is there.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Though I do know of one horse (UK based) who was sold on to a lady I worked with from a racing stable after being unable to perform. She used to work for the stable, had a bad fall and had taken a break, and the owner contacted her during when the horse fared poorly at the track. He didn't want to sell a good, sound young horse off to the winds of chance but he couldn't afford a horse that couldn't work so he'd asked if she'd take him, no charge. As far as I'm aware, she retrained him as a very good little jumper and a very nice little hack for herself. So perhaps Matt will do something similar. There are plenty of good charity stables who'd be happy to have Sureno. I imagine he'd make for a very good therapy horse, especially for children with autism.

Some friends of mine formerly were big into Saddlebreds. They had the best in the business. With time and age they opted against staying in show horses but had a huge amount of acreage on the property they wanted to do something with. So they started a "retirement" stable. If you had a horse that was looking for a place to stay for the rest of their lives, this was the place. They mixed with buddies in big pastures, got regular medical and farrier care, all they had to do was hang with their chums in loafing sheds and eat grass all day. Not that expensive, either. I'm sure there must be places in Europe where this horse can be boarded out long term. Not as a stud horse, of course. So geld him and find a good boarding stable where you can do for him what you want others to do - give him a forever home. Only difference is it would be you paying for it and providing it, not someone else. And this way you could keep track of his whereabouts instead of wondering what happened to him ten or fifteen years from now when you aren't able to locate him.

Maybe not immediately, but eventually. I have a horse that developed a bad suspensory lameness at age 12. After several years of very expensive but unsuccessful veterinary treatment, I leased him to someone for 6 months to see if he could tolerate gentle hacking. He could not. So I took him back and retired him at my own expense at a low key farm with pastures. He still happily resides there at the age of 25. I have given up things to pay for his upkeep, but I will never spend a sleepless night wondering if he's ok. Having known this breed (PRE) for such a long time, I can only say that what happened to your stallion happens quite frequently to particularly large PREs. Personally, that is why I would never buy one that is taller than 1.70m/1.72 (rule of thumb), and your stallion is even big boned and heavy for his size. They also grow and develop much more slowly than warmbloods. I have a PRE stallion that was castrated when we had to switch stables (he was 7 years old) and he grew another 5 centimeters after the castration (1.69m now). He is 9 now and I would say still between L and M (German levels), although his piaffe is already quite nice, but they have a talent for collection, so that doesn't really count - but on the whole he is 'behind' my German warmbloods at that age. PREs need more time to develop - also mentally - and they need to be worked accordingly so you can enjoy them for a long time. I just want to mention Fuego XII - also known as Fuego de Cardenas - , the Olympic stallion, as an example (1.65m) and also developed slowly by his rider Juan Manuel Muñoz Díaz. I wish you good luck in finding the perfect forever home for your stallion; I know from experience it's never easy for the owners and a lot of them feel that they 'let down' their horses.

I have to agree. He is just too big and heavy, the strain on his legs is huge. A PRE is not supposed to be more than around 160-165, that is the size they have been for centuries. It should be a compact, strong but not heavy horse. I know many people are trying to breed huge PREs like Sureno these days to get into the German, Dutch and US competition market, but size comes at a cost. It has been scientifically proven in studies that big horses have much shorter careers than normal sized horses. This research was done on WBs. Combined with the extravagant movements of the PRE XL size becomes an even bigger risk. The forces applied to joints and tendons are enormous.

PREs were originally bred for the bullring, and if they were not quick and small, they would not have lasted long in that job. The modern tendency to breed huge horses is not good for the breed. It’s not Sureno‘s fault. Matt, I think, has learned this lesson the hard way. The upside is that Matt is a responsible owner and he’s trying to look out for the horse’s best interests. Not everyone would do that.

U can tell by the way the horse acts that je knows how much Matt loves him and wants him to be happy and healthy. And Sorenno loves him too. ❤️ When ppl have these outstandingly expensive horses, it is imperative to pre tire them before turnout. It isn't a sure thing that it will prevent accidents 100%, but tired horses are less inclined to over exert themselves or argue with one another.

The problem with selling Surano (not sure of the spelling here) is that you lose control over what happens to him. This would be especially true if you were to send him to the US thousands of miles away. While I m not sure about the adviseability of using him as a breeding stallion, he should certainly find a good home where he will be appreciated, perhaps used a s a trail horse or hack as you suggest. The problem is how to ensure this in the longer run. We all know that while people may start out with the best of intentions, circumstances can change. Also some people are not entirely honest sad to say. There is I think a solution and it is this. Suppose you were to arrange to "lease " Surano to a suitable home/person for a very nominal sum of (say) 1 Euro a month or year or whatever the time unit you choose. The terms of thelease should stipulate that you have the right to visit Surano to ensure his needs are met. Otherwise the people leasing him can treat him as theır own horse. This also means of course that they have to meet the costs of maintainance--feeding, vet's bills, farrier visits etc. The thing is that if they ever feel that they can no longer keep him for whatever reason, he gets returned to you. Likewise, if youfeel that his needs are not being met, you can terminate the agreement and have him returned to you rather than risk having him sold on, and you not knowing what has happened to him. There are 2 examples that I know of of this type of arrangement. The first one is personal. My mother had a horse she became to old to ride and care for and fixed up such an arrangement with a woman who lived an hour and a half's drive away. This was in Massachusetts in the US. The arrangement worked well for the rest of the life of the horse. The second example comes from World Horse Welfare. thisisi Brisith organization that rescues hosrses, sometimes retrains them, and re-homes them with adopters. The adoption arrangementis somewaht similar to what I have outlined above. Hope thisis helpful.

In the United States I'd hate to say if this horse doesn't perform and has injuries unless you find the right person he would be doomed for slaughter. There's no room for injuries in the Show ring over here for a horse that has constant injuries and pain and most people if they can't place them in a rescue or find someone who just loves this breed of horse, they usually will not breed a horse with so many problems with injuries arthritis so young, and they will not have them around for land ornaments, 😢 💔 😞, I'm sad to say 😢 💔 😞 😔. The decision to surrender him is so sad I can't believe you would send him that far not knowing what is going on with him. The more the story of Serena’s story unfolds the more question I have. Finding out that he was competing at 2 years old already tells me that his first owner did not have his best interest at heart. Was he even getting the right feed and nutrients when he was young is a question. With his size , he definitely should have been developed a lot slower. Right from the start the foundation of his training was off….poor Soreno never got the chance to develop his body before people put him in extreme training. so sad! I really hope Matt would consider trying to get to the root of Sorenos problems. When you think about it the only muscles being trained were the dressage movements. It was mentioned a few times that they thought he maybe hurt himself in the fields. Matt mentioned that Soreno liked to roll in the dirt a lot. With his size, I have to think that he could easily have strained things just getting up from his nice roll in the dirt. I’m not smart enough to know if muscles he needs to get up are different than the ones getting worked in training. I have to ask all of you advocates of Soreno this one question. What should we make of the fact that Matt had already bought a new horse which he called his dream horse , which he named Ettro before he made the video announcing the end of his story with Soreno? He found room for Ettro but not Soreno. In all honesty, I am not sure what his plans are for the new horse, but I do know he is in the stable where Emporio is kept and where Soreno used to be. Some one help me understand please.

It's very disappointing to see yet another unsound horse left entire rather than gelded, unsound horses should never stay as a stallion. My opinion, with no hate. Also, we have kept all of our horses over the years until they die, no we are not rich, just worked hard all our life to support our passion of horses. We have had a stallion too and eventually had him gelded and he lived to 25. Our oldest horse is 39 years and happily living his life. I feel you are making the wrong move in selling your horse. How does he differ from Chase, he too felt he was getting a forever home. Between you and Jesse, I am sure you can think of ways to get clicks, with his beauty he could model your collection line, he could be a mascot for the breed of your sales You could take in one less sales horse to give space to this horse and not gamble with what kind of life he will have when you know you can give him a perfect life. As a breeder he will be kept from the company of other horses and no one will give him much attention until is time to use his sperm. As other comments were made, he really should not be used for breeding because of his size which you were o sensed with. He should not have to pay the price because his body could not hold up to the demands of your training. He is way too sweet of a horse to just abandon..He can pay his own way, give him a chance to have a job that won’t hurt him. Take one less trip to Africa to form a plan to include him in the scheme of things. It really doesn’t send a very good message to the sport to just dump a horse because he couldn’t meet your standards of training. Reimagine his place in your life. Please think about it… My heart actually hurts for what this horse has been through so far, left in a box stall for months not knowing why he has been deserted and now heading off to an unknown fate. Other people who might buy him for hacking will most likely be so in tune with how he is feeling, since he is prone to injury do you really want to chance him going to someone who might not have the money to care for him if he is ridden too hard on a hack. Please slow things down and really try to reimagine how to give him a job that will give this sweet soul a true purpose in life without him having to endure injuries……..please do it for him……he is still in your control. He has loyal followers.

Such a sad story. I’ve lived that story myself. About 12 years ago my Hanoverian gelding had a suspensory injury that went undiagnosed for months. Finally after getting a new vet, it was too late for stem cell. We did the old school rest and rehab approach twice. Same as you, he came along and would regress again. And on and on. Finally, it became too much for me to attempt riding a horse that didn’t get enough exercise to get out all the energy. It was scary and pointless. I retired him. I could only afford 1 horse so that was the end of my riding career. He was family with special needs so I still have him 7 years later. He’ll be 25 next month. Just wondering if instead of selling him, could you have him as part of a breeding program but still maintain ownership? Selling him relinquishes all control you would have over how he’s treated. I’m sure you know all this . Just a thought. Good luck. I understand how difficult these times are. Love watching your videos.

Matt, the beautiful sentimental video and gentle strokes to Sureno can’t camouflage the real truth behind your decision. If one purchases or rescues an animal you accept a commitment over the animals lifespan. No matter if you have a horse, a dog or a hamster. Sole option in my opinion if you are a „true“ animal lover. You have no space for him… Well you have just bought a new horse that got the space you could have given to Sureno, if you wanted. You own a huge property and obviously have the funds to take care of even some more horses, which you will most likely too own in the future…. That you even consider to sell him overseas, where you have no control at all of what happens to him, really shocked me and it displays, that it is not what is best for Sureno what really matters to you. Even if you absolutely have to get rid or a horse that can’t perform, there would be much better options if you loved your horse, such as a lease with the option to take him back at any time. We all know where the majority of horses with permanent medical conditions will end up sooner or later. Your decision is a contradiction to so many things you have said in the past, very, very disappointing. I can only beg and hope, that you will reconsider and not sell him. Innocent, defenseless Sureno, be aware his life and future lay solely in your hands, these kind of responsibilities one cannot pass on someone else.

@@szanar8422 hahah no ofcourse I didn't get "rid of her" because she is 19 years old. I bought her at 17, because all I wanted for her was a nice retirement place after having played polo for all her life at a school (She helped me to get over my riding fear after a riding accident, so I promised her if the time ever comes I would give her a nice retirement). I am high pregnant, couldn't find anyone to help me fulltime because of her location (it is a selfcare stable) and cannot walk much (pregnancy difficulties), and on top of that we found out she has cushings disease. It stressed me out because I want to be there 100% for her and make sure she gets her new medication and new food etc. I wanted I could monitor her myself.. but due to the circumstances it was really difficould. I choose not to be selfish when a sweet family in the neighborhood offered a home at their own stable. She was supposed to be loaned to them so I would get her back, but she is thriving so well with them (I get videos and pics every week) so I decided to sell her so she can stay there. It would be too sad at that age to keep moving her around when she is doing so well. So yeah I understand your concern but I choose not to be selfish with her. I can visit her as much as I want :)

And I don’t know you but I hear it in your voice how heartbreaking this is for you and other horse owners to sell them. Oh dear! I thought your life is easier than mine, but no this part is one of the hardest. I’m here for you, far away but I’m watching and your brokenness is mine. Do you know what I mean? Thank you for being open to us and show us your broken heart. We should all show more of our brokenness, because so many people struggle in quietness. I’m very sorry for you and Soreno (sorry if the name isn’t written correctly) and I’ll send you much love to go through this time. Couldn’t he live with your friend who is also a horse trainer? I forgot her name… She lost a horse in the last year. That’s such a beautiful place. If everybody gives one Euro maybe his food and so on can be paid and he can stay for free around the corner from you. If I could I would buy him. But I’m just a horse lover. One of those who cries when a horse whinnies. 😁😍❤️ And one more thing: This video is incredible. You and Soreno and the sunset. The light… I want to paint it. As a dog rescuer of over 20 years, I totally get it. Every dog I rescued was incredibly damaged both physically and mentally but thankfully I was able to rehabilitate them and then finding the right home. I bawled my head off every time I took one of my rescues to their forever home cos they took a piece of my heart with them. Where are you located? I'm being crazy but I've always wanted my own horse ever since I was 4 years old. I do have about 10 years of English riding (Thoroughbreds) classes in Surrey England and when in Iran, I started riding my father's best friend's Arabian racers at around 12 yo (Arabians both both race but just under a mile and endurance competition) in a full size racetrack where the Shah's brother boarded his houre collection and they were the best money could buy as you can imagine. I talked (bribed more like it) one of his grooms to let me go in the rink with the most beautiful homozygous colt that I've ever seen even to this day and he was resisting his male groom but was really playful with me. I often wonder what happened to him and the other beauties after the revolution. Ugh

You said he had a forever home with you, no matter what. You promised that horse, on camera for all to see. He can’t perform the work so you rush out, buy a bay horse that’s two small for you to replace him. And that’s what it is, instead of gelding him - as he should not be bred with these issues - and retiring him to the field… you need him gone to make room for your new pony. These horses aren’t shiny toys for you to play with until you break them or find a new one. Disgusted and unfollowed. Despicable trying to hide behind sad music and a sunset, that horse doesn’t deserve to be shipped around, so sad.

@DappleGrayAllDay This is a super expensive, chronically lame horse. Do you really think someone’s going to shell out that much money for a lame horse and give it a great life for the next 20-25 years? I have real mixed feelings about this. I remember the video with the 'horse psychic' and Emporio where Matt promised him a forever home. "to the end'. I wonder if had he done the same for Serreno what would be the outcome now? In the original introduction video his owner reveals he started as a 2 yr old competing in Spain. She'd had him for a yr and a half but had to sell him. So now he's had at least 3 owners in his life.He also had been used for breeding. I also wonder if the size of riders could have contributed to his leg issues. His previous owner was tiny and Matt is...not. I guess I'm just wondering if because of his size circumstances have conspired to set him up to fail. Maybe expecting too much from a young horse because it is big. Also hasn't Matt said he eventually wants to get into breeding? So why not keep Serreno for that?

Exactly. It’s just too many horses and he can’t manage it all and he is always looking for everything he owns to be PERFECT that he is ok with letting Sureno go but he doesn’t want to associate with any imperfections. He talks about high level riding and he never even competed. Like what high level does he talk about? He's not selling Sureno because he's not perfect, he's selling him because he wants a BETTER home for him, a home that suits his needs better and he feels like he can't give him that. How and why is that a BAD thing for you? Yeah he talks about wanting to compete, but he has to train the horses for it first, you don't get a horse and then instantly go to high level competitions.. You're assuming a lot of negative things about him when in reality you're just assuming, because nothing you've said so far is something you'd think after watching him for years.

@@Wenoxia Who can afford to buy a PRE stallion that’s chronically lame and probably won’t be rideable long term? What “better life” exists for him? If this was a grade horse or almost any other breed there would be thousands of young girls and boys and adults willing to shell out a few thousand dollars to have him. The people who can afford to pay PRE prices are going to want a horse they can ride. No doubt the only market for him is with shady breeders who want to make big bucks off his stud service while giving him minimal care before selling him off to slaughter when he’s no longer paying the bills/of “service,” as Matt is doing right now.

what I can't get, dressage was developed for the horse to keep healthy, why do so many people sell their horses once they can't reach a certain level. well then it's enough for the horse but fine, why not keep it like this, why does everybody need to reach sth he can't get, you buy a horse because you love it, and the horse loves you, you don't see what relationship you have with him and also Emporio, who is jealous on your other horses, watch out you don't loose your soul by loosing so many soul horses

Such is life. Never easy. I would suggest gelding this lad prior to selling. The responsibility on you is too great to sell him as an entire. He has a weakness somewhere. Does that weakness have a genetic component; who knows? Is it worth the risk breeding from him and having offspring this happens to?....No. It is not. Could you live with yourself if similar problems (with all the heartache attached) show up in even one of his offspring down the line? Do you want to be partially responsible for someone else going through what you are going through? There are some wonderfully sound horses out there in the world. Breed from them. Don't potentially weaken the gene pool by breeding from an already weak individual; no matter how wonderful he is in other ways. Many dog breeders are beginning to accept responsibility for genetic weaknesses showing up in their pups and are becoming more responsible breeders. This is your chance to do the right thing and not to perpetuate indiscriminate breeding. Breed from the best and the soundest. He (for all his assets) is not sound. Please, consider this and geld him prior to sale.
