Just wanna clear something up about this quest, Irminsul can't _actually_ change the past. It can only affect memories, which is why the vase at the end is still broken. There is no "second timeline" after Scaramouche erases himself, just an altered version of the first timeline where nobody remembers him. The Balladeer still existed, everything he did still happened, it's just that everyone's memories have been altered to a version of history where he didn't exist. So, Paimon still broke the vase, she just doesn't remember breaking it because she initially broke it due to stress over what the Balladeer did. If she doesn't remember who the Balladeer is, and what he did, then she wouldn't have had a reason to break the vase. The same thing happened to Rukkadehvata, everyone's perception of history changed, but history itself didn't. EDIT: A lot of people are asking why books are altered if Irminsul only changes a person's memories, so I'll just explain that really quickly. Irminsul doesn't affect the past, but it does affect _information_ which includes books, and to a certain extent, memories. A person's brain is just a really advanced fleshy computer, and your memories are the information stored within that computer. Information like books and memories aren't the same as historical events, that's an entirely different thing that Irminsul can't effect. I've also seen some people mention the Ei, Makoto and the Sacred Sakura, so I'll also touch on that. The creation of the Sacred Sakura _was not Irminsul alteration._ Makoto somehow got Istaroth, the God of Time, involved with her plan on helping Ei realize what Eternity means. Istaroth is one of the four shades of Phanes, the Primordial One (look them up, Genshin lore is cool), but because Istaroth is the God of Time, she can directly influence history, and bring the seed that Ei planted in the Realm of Consciousness back in time to be planted in the past.

@@cucumbercytus Sacred Sakura's case is a Time Paradox created by Ei due to unleashing full potential of her Musou Isshin in the time altered space(Makoto's realm of consciousness) and help of a higher being (Istaroth one of the shade of a Primordial one) so she could plant the seed back to 500 years. And no Archons cannot alter the timeline of Teyvat at their own will.

The firefighter would probably ask them to move so they can save them, but not in an irritated way, "are you done yet?!" So warranted? No. Understandable? Yes. In character for Paimon who probably has never suffered a mental breakdown in her life, at least while she was with the traveller? Yes. The thing is, I don't think he is at peace at all, if anything, he is much more at war with himself now than ever before. I see a lot of people say that "Oh they copped out and absolved his sins", but that is wrong, he literally had NONE of his sins absolved, at all. The difference is that now he is no longer self assured that the evil things he did and were doing were righteous, now, he has every single one of those sins haunting him, while knowing he was evil and needs to atone. I really like this more "humble" scaramouche that is now our little jerk.

"There's gotta be a little bit of his devious self left in him" - the fun thing about this is... there isn't. Back when he was created and before life threw him around, without all that trauma that got him bitter, he was a really kind-hearted person, the whole idea behind being rejected as a prototype came from him being to emotional and fragile. They have a lot of parallels with Makoto, with them both having affinity to swordsmanship, enjoying watching common people, and being quite soft-hearted. It is very much canon since even as 'Scaramouche', he had a soft-spot for children and elderly. So it's a little heart-breaking to see how callous he's grown to be, especially because his self as Kabukimono never vanished, he's still as fragile and tender inside, but it morphed so much he's unlikely to be comfortable showing it ever again. Hopefully, he'll find some peace for himself along his story.

Because if you ask the two Fatui in Monstad, they'll tell you that "The Sixth Seat of the Harbingers has been empty for years."- why has nobody taken it? It feels like they must know Scaramouche existed to some level by leaving the seat empty, no doubt Pierro may have some sort of awareness for it and Dottore, by proxy of being the second, may get some insight. It may just not be an empty revenge for Wanderer when the time comes anyways- not to mention the vague implication Dottore will come to regret his decision of offing his clones.

Fun fact: when scaramouche talks about his past and how Haypasia reacted to seeing it with traveler in pardis dhyai he mentions how its something worthless that should be erased. There's also just a ton of foreshadowing from the summer event that blew me away as well. Particularly Mona's island and how fate can't be changed. There is one side quest from the Summer Event where on Mona's island you find notes left behind by and adventurer about how he got trapped in the ruins (and presumably died). Since you can shift the island between past and present states you can go to the room he got trapped in and leave a warning. Doing this several times as the adventurer journal updates each time until you get to the treasure. Paimon wonders if you saved him in the past for real and traveller reminds her the mountain top they found the journal on is still in the archipelago and that the mirage is based on Mona and she even said people can't escape their fate (or something like that, it was half a year ago).

that adventurer went to dragonspine and presumably died there. he is the one who was guiding the quest in dragon spine apparently who actually prevented and warned other travellers from the dangers in dragonspine so that they can travel safely. there is a video linking it I will link it here later. conclusion: in Teyvat no matter how you change the past the fate cannot be altered. ps. zhongli also said that the traveller is the only one who recorded everything accurately, in salt goddess quest. he indicated erosion presumably then but we never know what he actually meant.

Four things that I loved about this interlude quest: 1. Dottore just being plain evil; I mean, even after that glowup from his webtoon/manga design and one hell of a VA (god, his acting when transitioning from the mechanic to his self was SO GOOD), hoyo clearly wants to push the idea that he really is just a psychopath ever since the webtoon. 2. Wanderer being an anti-hero; I love that when he got his vision, both his previous and future incarnation were fused together to create the current Wanderer who is still a brat but with a little better perspective in life. Still heartbreaking that the first thing he thought of when finding out the truth about Niwa was not even vengeance against Dottore but attempting to remove his own existence entirely. 3. No sudden make-up between Raiden and Scaramouche; I would be fine if HE wanted to attempt in letting them try and understand each other but clearly, Raiden just wanted him to be free and not be associated with him at all for centuries. She already had struggles in making peace with herself and her losses (adding to how she only just barely started her character development). Plus, I think it’s natural that Wanderer still feels hurt by it but just moves on (even easier now that he tampered with her memories) because what’s there to resolve anyway? It won’t really change anything 4. Nahida, best auntie and friend; honestly, the entire time I was in awe with her guidance and wisdom that she sprung throughout the entire quest. From her willingness to helping both Wanderer AND Traveller to her big brain plan to her soft-scolding teachings whenever she reprimands with Wanderer’s self-degradation. She’s just been a therapist/counsellor the entire time lol Honestly, ever since 2022 started, the quests really riled up because damn Interludes in Liyue, the event and side story quests, Golden Apple Archipelago 2.0, the entirety of Sumeru arc What a rollercoaster

Whoever has loved and lost, cried with grief, howled with rage at the tragedy of death that eclipses the miracle of life...they are human, too." man i think this quote perfectly explains genshin impact. it's a game essentially about the deep, deep faults of humanity and not-so-humanity. because even with the non-humans, their stories reflect what it means to be "human." this game is a lot of things, but it's a story about what it means to be human and how people are willing to go to war for their own definition. so much so that they would even go against divinity itself to prove what it means to be human, as proven by Khaenri'ah. man i flack on genshin a lot for the stuff that happens, but man the story is so good. i love seeing compelling characters, especially when the character is immortal and has all the time in the world to unpack what it means to be human and what they should do for an eternity. it kinda freaks me out in a comic way, a good way ofc, but to imagine what to do for an eternity, i like seeing what answers people come up with

Fun fact: people in general aren't originally malicious. They are made malicious by experienced trauma, Scaramouche isn't the only one. His actions were, in fact, evil (killing off a bunch of innocent people from Kaedehara clan for example). By trying too erase this fact people only make the change for the better in Wanderer - his redemption - less significant, which in my opinion is unfair to the character. Let him redeem himself.

Spoilers for the end: I still have mixed feelings about some voice lines being gone (like Childe's, Miko's, Raiden's) and some lore being changed (the letter we get from Kazuha about what happened to his clan), but otherwise, I'm happy for Scara/Wanderer. We saw how he could've been if his life was different, but the Scara we have after this quest is my favourite. I totally adore how he didn't just go on with his life like nothing happened but wanted those people to know the truth. And he changed the past not for himself, but because the people he met back then deserved better. Pity it didn't work out like that though. And Niwa is my favourite NPC now. Teppei who? Just for his last words for Kabukimono, Niwa easily favourite NPC.

why the mixed feelings? think about it this way: if the voicelines were still there then wouldn't it break everybody's immersion? scaramouche/kabukimono/balladeer was erased from existence and it wouldn't make sense for the lines about him to still be there. also, take note that the only one erased from everyone's memories was the knowledge of scara/kabukimono on tatarasuna and kunikuzushi. technically ei and miko still know about him existing but not as the kabukimono or kunikuzushi. i bet they still think that he's the pure puppet that is still wherever they decided to "set him free" in. it was fitting for both the story development and character details for those lines not being there. the changes are almost the same with what happened with greater lord rukkhadevata tbh also, by doing this, hoyo really made us feel something about the traveler's point of view wherein WE and only WE remember all this stuff that happened. it's truly an immersive experience and it feels real. even the two fatui NPCs in mondstadt (in front of the waypoint near the alchemy table) says that the 6th seat of the harbingers was left vacant for hundreds of years. i personally think it's really cool that they decided to do it this way. makes you realize how much work hoyo puts into the little details.

And I believe Raiden's/Miko's voice lines about Scara are gone too, so not even they remember him. Kazuha's letter mentions some stranger instead of Scaramouche/Kunikuzushi. Don't get me wrong though, I love the story, I love what they did. But I still wonder about where are they gonna take it. Like, for example - Dottore. Does Dottore still remember Scara? And if not, does that mean he forgot everything he learned from him (from the experiments)? What does Childe think about sitting in Inazuma instead of being home? Does Ei remember she once made a prototype before making the Raiden Shogun puppet or does she now think the Shogun is her first work? I have nothing against this type of plot. But it's difficult to pull off properly without plot holes. Only Traveler remembering something is cool though. So while I'm loving it so far, I'm still gonna sit and wait until we see more consequences of this decision in the story. Seeing the whole outcome of it will make me feel more clear about the whole thing, since we don't know everything yet, if that makes sense.

But to be honest, we don't know how much the Harbingers now remember about Sumeru or how much they care for Sumeru or whatever, since everything they were doing in Sumeru was kinda tied to Scaramouche, the electro Gnosis is for example tied to Scaramouche a lot. They clearly still built the false God, but there definitely were some changes in their plans, no? Like, did they still have the Gnosis while building the machine? And if so, who the hell got the Gnosis from Miko if not Scara? Honestly, it's so complicated because we don't know how much Hoyo will let this memory-deleting stuff influence the future. I was already in a 4 hours long debate about this once and all I can say is that our brains were fried. There are just too many possibilities and paths they can take.

Through the first half of this quest, I was actually stressing out when Scaramouche eradicated himself from Irminsul, as I thought it would lead to a reality-rewriting scenario. But it was after meeting Xavier that I fully realised what that actually did. After all, Greater Lord Rhukkhaevatah had lived possibly 100 times longer than him, if not longer, but history was merely rewritten rather than completely changed after her erasure. But now I am concerned about Nahida, or rather her missing memories about a certain Archon. It has already been established that she feels an emotional 'hole' left by her predecessor's absence, and is aware about it. And now the Wanderer exists as living proof that people can be erased from history itself. Add to that she had first felt these feeling after saving Irminsul... Nahida is a very smart kid, so it may be a matter of time before she puts this all together. We have just one more story quest from her, based on the previous two Archons. So we should wait and see.

I mean, me personally, I try to play my games as if I'm "role-playing" as much as possible. That scene gave me a level of unease as I wanted to make sure everything was stable but did not want to be disrespectful to this person who had no idea what was going on. I've seen a lot of people complaining that because of this quest scara has become wasted potential but I really don't get it, hoyo has been setting up this character since 1.1, multiple quests and events dedicated to his foundation leading up to this. yes it's sad that the fatui don't remember him but scara explicitly states he's going to confont dottore. Overall this quest forces him to directly face his trauma, he's finally healing and if he does meet ei, miko, or even kazuha it will be by his own obligation because he is no longer driven by a purpose given to him by others as shown by him earning a vision, but even with all of that people still say that being deleted from irmnsul = scara doesn't have to confront his actions like please read before you complain.

I would like for an official confirmation sometime soon, preferably before 4.0, on whoever the mysterious voice was. They spoke to Traveler through the mind, so that rules out a great many possible people. Both Nahida and Scaramouche have done that in this quest, and the only thing they have in common is that they’ve used the divine power of a Gnosis in their lifetime. It narrows down to the only possible people being Focalors or The Tsaritsa. Maybe the unknown god, but that would be a bit of a stretch.

I think this quest and Sumeru's storyline in general demonstrates how easily Teyvat's history and people's memories/knowledge can be manipulated and it also makes me think a lot about Scara's quote of the stars and the sky being a lie. This will probably affect future quests and i'm here for it. Also, are khaenri'ahns even affected by the erasure of memories from the Irminsul?? Because from what I remember Khaenri'ah is considered to be outside/separated from Teyvat itself. If that happens to be true then Pierro DEFINITELY remembers Scaramouche. I might be wrong tho idk. I understand a lot of people are not happy with the memory erasure thing because of possible plot holes but I think this can be determinant in future quests and i'm quite excited about it!!
