This was one of the most emotional, exciting and nail biting stages I’ve ever seen. Like you said Chris, it’s up there with the ITT from 2020, except I like to delete that memory from my head lol. However, what I love the most about Primoz is his story. The crashes, sickness, doubts, trials & failures. He always bounces back and proves to everyone who doubted him that he is a top notch lad, on & off the bike. It was super emotional to watch his reaction at the end with his family, and teammates. Great stuff! Can’t wait to see him compete at the TdF and put Pogi under some pressure. 😉👊🏼

I appreciate your positive comments about Primoz, Chris... for me the biggest difference to 2020 (when he was also pretty damn fast) is that he is much lighter! I vividly remember thinking in the 2020 TT that he had pretty wide hips for a GC rider who needs to climb light. He looks way fitter now - maybe good nutrition, maybe better training, whatever combo... it's working. Amazing victory espec with that chain drop. (I remember dropping a chain on a bike going up a huge CA climb and OUCH... not fun!) Kudos to Roglic. A well-earned win - from a G Thomas fan. :-)

Wow. That was the best. Amazing culmination of this tour. After Remco left, I thought it would not be exciting, but I was wrong. Thomas rode really well and pushed Primoz to the end. You can not set it up better than this. Primoz down by seconds on his home court with a nuts ITT and Primoz drops his chain. He got it on pretty quick. I was more worried about that start. Glad he had a push from two. thomas did not look good with those salt stains. Not a good sign going into the steep section of the ITT. I am really glad Primoz got this after 2020. Talking about butterfly effect... - The guy in red who helped him gain speed was actually in same team that won the gold medal not far from there, with Primoz. - He travelled there with his friend on a bike, went up the hill without bike, of course (bike not allowed). They agreed with a friend that they would support Primoz on part of the climb that was not designated for fans. They stood 100m apart. - He was actually talking to Primoz's mom not long before that and she told him not to push Primoz, as he got penalty in last Giro for that. - So just to be on the safe side, he waited for the mechanic to push first. His ski jumping career seems to be following him around.

This stage was fantastic. I had never seen a designated bike exchange section within a time trial before, so it was really interesting to see all the logistics behind that. I have to say that some of these guys could learn a few tricks from their fellow triathletes to smooth out that bike to bike transition. The flying mount and dismount would have saved a few seconds in the transition. Speaking of time saves, G Thomas swapping helmets was unbelievable. I think the helmet swap may have cost him at least 15-20 seconds. Although, the time might not have made a difference if Primoz did not have his mechanical issue. That cost him significant time and he still finished with a comfortable lead. His ability to remain calm in that situation and the end up with the result should silence people doubting his fitness.

Helmet change was needed as a TT helmet is very hot and G was already overheated as seen by the salt on his shorts. The 15-20 secs he lost was cancelled out by the 15-20 sec that Rog lost with the chain drop and Rog still beat him by 40 sec.

Primoz Roglic puts himself in the pantheon of epic performances in Grand Tour Time Trial performances, this is right up there with Greg LeMond 1989 TdF Stage 21 & Tadej Pogacar 2020 TdF Stage 20, Geraint Thomas finished 2nd & still lost his 26 second advantage. Rubbish, shimano drive trains drop plenty of chains in the peleton, but nobody fixates on it like they do with Sram.
@vinniamsterdam700 Жыл бұрын
But Shimano forces you to use a rubbish incorrect power meter, that's the reason TJV changed, they want correct numbers when they look at their power meters. The Shimano is rumoured to be particularly bad with high torque on the small rim.

SHIMANO is heavy. And bad wheels too. No one would ride the dura ace wheels that’s for sure

Great show Chris, I run one by set ups here in Florida. You do not need the chain stop to keep the chain from falling off I use cheap, narrow-wide chain rings that I get from Amazon and they work great. I never drop a chain and the bikes, are very light and fast, if I lived in an area that had hills like I used to, I would run a one by system just like Roglic. The front derailer is a nuisance, and it adds weight and complexity to the bike. You’re actually far more likely to lose your chain with a dual chain ring set up in the front than with the set up that I have now, those systems with the large cassettes work great on mountain bikes, and there’s no reason they can’t work on a road bike , Although you would not need a cassette that large, unless you were actually climbing in the Alps most people do not, most riders don’t need a chain ring in the front bigger than a 50 T all the prod might want something larger than that. Thanks.

Narrow-Wide better than the Tall or Wavy chainring teeth solutions? Do you run a clutched rear derailleur? How much do you believe it can help in avoiding chain drop?
@adamcurpier Жыл бұрын
You don't necessarily need the chain drop guard, but why even take that chance ... wonder the thought process from the JV mechanics. I'm assuming he is using Red eTap Road AXS 12spd rear derailleur which uses a "fluid clutch" mechanism ... very sensitive, and only engages with more high speed cage rotations ... ie. bumps, etc. (per Sram). The chain, flat-top red (can see in the photo), is narrower than previous Sram models, but would pair fine with the front chainring. Looks like a 10-33t 12spd cassette perhaps? This is my speculation though ...

It was fun watching Riccitello in the hot seat. He looked like a young kid especially eating the lollies. Primoz needed a Wolftooth. Put one on my one by after several chain loses and it has been fabulous, total trust that it will stay on.

I think there is a small chain guide on Roglic’s bike. It sits just above the chain. If it’s a proper one by ring with wide narrow teeth, it’s pretty hard to drop a chain.
@wwelsh100 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I have never run on rode, but the gravel rings are nearly impossible to drop from because of tooth height.
@andyeunson270 Жыл бұрын
@@wwelsh100 is Roglic using a clutch derailleur? Mandatory with one by in my mountain bike experience. When I first experimented, I had a DH ring, not narrow wide, but with a top mount chain guide. I think even with a clutch derailleur I was dropping chains when I was going downhill, level cranks and going into a left turn left foot forward, drop my right foot to the bottom to corner, pedalling backwards to do so and bump would cause the chain to jump about and drop off. Roglic hit a bump just prior to the chain dropping. Still hard to figure out what happened.
@ChrisHornerCycling Жыл бұрын
Clearly we can all agree that it’s not a “proper one” 😂👊🦋
@channul4887 Жыл бұрын
@@andyeunson270 "pedalling backwards to do so" That's why you kept dropping chains. The more extreme the rear cog the more likely you are to do it in this situation. What Roglic had on his bike was a chain catcher not a chain guide.

Fantastic as always Chris! Really want to know from your perspective, what is the advantage of a 1x setup in the pro tour? Fully agree with you that the jumps are too big and you didn't need even a 36t cassette in 2013!! But what are the advantages? Why bother from Roglic perspective?

Thank you for the vid Chris! . In fact, Primo`s bike had the tiny chainguide that some riders have been using for races like Roubaix and flanders, you can see the tiny silver bolt on top of the chainring.
@PTRarch Жыл бұрын
But that only prevents the chain from dropping to the inside / frame side (where it's harder to pick it up and has more chance of getting stuck between the ring and BB). A guide on both sides would have saved him the drop probably. But I concur with a lot of the comments: not a real marketing-win for SRAM...

Today's stage was the definition of shock-and-awe. I wanted Roglic to win but was okay with - and expecting - Thomas to win. I probably looked like Sepp Kuss as they were watching to see the final time. Sitting back hoping but not really believing until it was confirmed. Man what a ride this Giro has been for us fans! As for Roglic going to the Tour this year? He's just finished the Giro, he's scheduled for the Vuelta and Vingegaard is slated for the Tour and has been training with his team so I do not see TJV switching out Jonas for Primoz.

The fist bump before the fisticuffs between two worthy rivals, could there be a classier moment before a cycling prize fight for the ages? Thanks for showing it to us, Chris, and what a race, such a beautiful stage with all those fans along that narrow path up the mountain. And cheers to all the riders for being heavy hitters today, each answering the bell and going down swinging. And not to crank about anything, pun slightly intended, but with all the tech, all the work, all the development and application of 1x gravel groups, why O why O why no Dirt 101 with a chain guide? Crazy and zany and O well. And I join in the calls for Primoz to be at the Tour this year, when you're hot you're hot and no better time to strike than now, a showdown at high noon. And besides, with Remco relaxing by the pool, what would Coyote do? 😀

Totally agree with you Chris, when healthy, Roglic is obvious number 2. at the current cycling. One of the modern GOATS of cycling. He is the only one, who is capable of beating Pogacar (hats off to Vingeegard last year), but I dont think it's ever going to happen again without any injury or illness of Pogacar.

Hope you can fill me up...if Roglic has won a stage here at the Giro and for sure won a stage in Vuelta and TdF he already has a grand slam of the large tours? Thanks!💥👍✌️

Thank you, Chris, for an awesome treatment throughout the Giro, I certainly enjoyed your analysis. I’ve written many times on the comments expressing my love and confidence for Roglic, somehow he’s been forgotten how good really and that he’s the main contender to Pogacar. He’s definitely proved many people wrong, showing that 2020 was just as bad as it was for Thomas. Hats off to Thomas, I love him, he’s supper strong and fun to watch. TJV will regret their decision for lack of vision; I’ve said it the Rogla should consider moving to Ineos, that’s his home, they’ve been looking a GT rider and Rogla looking for a kind home.
