What the filmmakers succeeded in this and other scenes was showing the gap between DFW and others, especially the pseudo-intellectual journalists who were less interested in talking to him and more interesting in riding his coattails through interviews. You can see the enthusiasm in Segel's face and the disinterest in Eisenberg's.

David is my actual reflection. I resonate with every word this man said, because I understand him and why he was like he was. That's a great feeling to know that there was someone that was similar to me. It's just too bad he's still not alive. I'm always looking for my tried and true reflection, one who really knows and understands it all, and is brutally honest with themselves and others about all things. He is definitely missed, but not forgotten ◑

What I could not get over in this scene was the such obvious fact that Jesse Eisenberg had never smoked a single cigarette in his entire life. Why does he hold it like that???

He means spiritually. Man will have starved himself of real nourishment because the sort of instant gratification fake reality gives is faster, but ultimately meaningless and leaves man hollow, because he isn't nourishing his soul. Like that section of Infinite Jest where people begin having video calls, but they do all these things to make themselves look better by basically putting filters over their cameras, but doing this scares them from really going outside anymore because they've developed an unrealistic fear that people will find them disgusting irl, so they become reclusive and don't have any real genuine relationships with people anymore. Whereas in reality man is made to be connected to other people. As the Lord Jesus Christ said, the two greatest commandments are "love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul," and "love your neighbor as yourself."

But, isn't everything we do, even interpersonal relationships, just a bid for neurological response? how is unnatural different from natural? id love to see opinions on this.
@g___________v6850
@g___________v6850 3 жыл бұрын
Very crudely: we evolved in response to "natural" and in some sense we expect "natural". And I don't think there is anything that can replicate the feeling of being involved in a healthy human relationship, be it a friend or significant other or within a broader active community(a decent place of work, village, well integrated and governed city borough). The entertainment is an escape from the rigours and disappointment in the pursuit of connection/succes but also a false kind of pursuit of connection/succes in itself(that is doomed to fail).
@JosephTheAustin
@JosephTheAustin 3 жыл бұрын
@@g___________v6850 are we so sure its doomed to fail once its an identical but just better experience of life? I'm reminded of that scene in the matrix where the guy gives up on fighting because man, that steak tastes good.I mean, we all just want to be happy, and if we can be happier in non-reality when VR is a perfect deep-dive experience of all your dreams coming true, well... is it bad if it doesn't fail? Is there a fundamental badness to 'not real' or are we just sad to see things we're used to valuing lose their value?

@@JosephTheAustin _“Is there a fundamental badness to 'not real'”_ I think you're focusing too much on the _‘not real’_ part of the conversation and not on the _“people who do not love us but want our money”_ part. To put it bluntly, Internet pornographers have men by the balls and have offered them an exploitative alternative to the feared risk of being rejected when pursuing other human beings.
@JosephTheAustin
@JosephTheAustin 3 жыл бұрын
@@MirrorDimly Ok but the question is, why should I care, if I'm happy? I've spent at least a quarter of the last 2 years in virtual reality feeling happy with my pretend body... why shouldn't I embrace the next step, if it makes me even happier? What if it is indiscernible from 'reality'? Why exactly should I care?

Most peoples life is not interesting enough to base a movie or book on. Even these folks whose life was made into a book or movie - the writer had to really embellish certain aspects of the persons life to make it interesting

ok, true. but inevitable. But it isn't the things you want to have that will get you. its going to be the things you want to be. The perfect body. The perfect sense of power. VR is going to give you that. What you want to obtain isn't what will get you hooked, its what you will attain.

The contemporary diet of the Average American is abysmal. The entertainment they consume is arguably even worse. He was right. Even interacting by proxy through text, we aren't biologically capable of dealing with what modern life is, offers, or demands. A ton of people dogpile on Wallace because he's the preferred writer of a specific kind of lit bro, or whatever else, but he was right.
