Oh, if you thought YOU had chills during this episode... imagine all the classic Who fans who knew who the Master was. They were in absolute bits! It helps that he's played by two amazing actors. The first is Derek Jacobi, a bone-fide classic who's been acting for decades and is always excellent. The second is John Simm, probably best known from the original Life on Mars show, but who's also in the more recent series Grace.

I've mentioned this elsewhere but there was a one-person, partly improvised play running in London called 'White Rabbit, Red Rabbit' - a different actor/celebrity every night. I went along specifically to see Freema (as I couldn't afford tickets to see her in Tom Holland's Romeo and Juliet!). I wondered about the reception, because there had been some really HUGE names in the show (Catherine Tate the night before) but I needn't have worried. Lots of cheers and laughter, clearly a lot of Who fans in the audience. Freema herself was really nice, funny and generous when sharing the stage with volunteers. The only thing that shook me was when the writer of the play asked the unknown (to him) actor to describe herself. Freema goes, "Well, black, dreadlocks, 45." There was a little murmur in the audience. To me she always seems frozen here in her mid-twenties, fighting aliens alongside the Doctor. But for Freema, 20 years have gone by. A sobering, timey-wimey thought.

The reveal of the Master is one of the best reveals in all of media, because it knows how to play to both of its audiences. If you’re a Classic Who fan, you’ll pick up on what’s going on fairly quickly. There’s really only one other Time Lord it can be, especially with the way everything is shot and written, you don’t even need the Classic dialogue to grasp that. But if you’re a NuWho only fan, then all you know is that this is a Time Lord because of the work Human Nature did to establish this whole concept of a Time Lord hiding themselves as a human, which is significant enough because of how much emphasis is put on the Doctor’s uniqueness as the Last of the Time Lords. So finally, here is a second, which should obviously be great news! …But you know it’s not. From the way the episode is framed, shot and scored, you just know this won’t be a good reveal. You can’t quite explain why yet but everything the episode does builds this sense of fear and dread until the moment when he finally succumbs and opens the watch, leaving you excited but scared of what’s about to happen at the same time. And after the Master returns and Jacobi switches his performance (perfectly portraying him, it cannot be wide enough times) from the kindly, gentle but brilliant professor to the sinister, sadistic monster, you begin to understand how bad this as as he understands who he is. So as his calm but menacing anger builds up to the final reveal of “I… am… the Master,” you know everything you need to know about him while also technically knowing nothing at all. That one moment tells new audiences exactly who he is and exactly why they should be afraid. It’s just peak, absolute cinema.

When the doctor saw Jack, some of Nine came to the front, hence a tad grumpier. The doctor is all those personas, but in certain incarnations some traits fade back, others come forward. Bits of past personas can come forward into current personas. The smile when he and Jack were speaking as Jack was in that radiation filled chamber reminded me of nine’s smile. Each doctor seems another person and then something happens to make you realize it’s all the Doctor. I recommend a very humorous special which was rather a loving parody of Doctor who, written by Steven Moffat back before Russell Davies rebooted the show. It’s called “The Curseof Fatal Death” and it’s worth a watch just for fun (predates modern Who so no spoilers).

Derek Jacobi (The Professor Yana incarnation of the Master) is a very well known British Shakespearian actor and I wish we saw more of him as The Master than the 30 seconds we got although John Simm is good I wish Derek Jacobi had more time. The voices the Master hears in his head "The Drums the neverending drumbeat open it you human fool and recieve my majesty" was Derek Jacobi's own voice then "Destroy him and you will give your power to me!" was archive sound footage was Roger Delgado the original Master.

Fantastic reaction. Martha great as always. I love how you treat her and consider things from her point of view. It makes me very happy. I would have liked a longer run of Derek Jacobi as the Master. You may have seen him in so many things -- Shakespeare, _Vicious, Brother Cadfael,_ almost every movie Kenneth Branagh has directed, _Good Omens_ -- like Savoir Faire, he is everywhere. John Simm is also on a series you might like, _Life on Mars_ (original UK version). "The Doctor hides things from us too." Interesting. But the writers hide things from the Doctor. :) I don't think you are remembering quite right about Sarah Jane. If anything the Doctor was immediately excited to see her, even though she didn't realize who he was at first. His face lit up and how he said her name -- he was like a fanboy for her or someone in love (not saying it was necessarily romantic love but it could easily be read that way -- he was just so happy to see her again). I definitely didn't think he was casual about it or cold like he was with Jack in this episode. Although I do think his reaction to Jack has to do with the same reasons he abandoned Jack, even if it seems strange to us.

It was planned decades ago that the Master would be revealed as the Doctor's brother in the Third Doctor's final story. The accidental death of the actor playing the Master at the time changed the plans and the link was never confirmed, though there were hints in the Target novelizations of some stories about a deeper connection than was seen on TV. My only problem with this episode is one that many sadly suffer from, and that is the fact that people who have seen only the new version had no idea who the Master was and his significant history with the Doctor.

I get that, but Derek Jacobi played it so well that even newbies realised it was a big deal. His performance was so chilling and had so much gravitas. As a classic who fan, it was amazing at the time, as you knew straight away it could only be The Master.

Prepare to meet the Doctor's greatest enemy. Nope, it's not the Daleks, nor the Cybermen. Of all those enemies, there's only one who could match up to the Doctor physically and mentally. And always. ALWAYS. Be one step ahead. The Master.

The Doctor left Jack because he is now an "anomaly", he shouldnt be possible. Because of Rose /Bad Wolf he can't die, he is a fixed point in time and even the Tardis rejected him to the point that she went to the end of the universe to get rid of him.

John simm got the part of the master after the success of the first series of Life on Mars (the UK version obvs.) which got a trailer straight after the end of the first series of doctor who.a different thing entirely but has some time travel elements in it. And would be a brilliant suggestion for watching (NOT the U.S. remake, which I personally enjoyed except for it's ending)

NO SPOILERS!!!! Literally all you need to know is The Master was The Doctor’s most evil and most mortal enemy in the old series. Everything else you’ll find out the hard way 😂

The problem with using mirrors against the angels is then you have to worry about Daughter of Mine. Cause she's in the mirror. Every mirror. Have you ever seen her out of the corner of your eye?
