Try habit stacking! Basically find a habit you already do that can be a trigger for reading. What I did was for every time I go to pick up my phone for social media I would put it back down and pick up a book instead. Checking social media was a habit so I used that to trigger the reading habit (and it got me off my phone) :)

I definitely think people would be interested in a video about making reading a habit, and you could even do it as a challenge. 1 video could be read for 30 mins when you wake up for a week, the 2nd video could be reading on your lunch break for a week (I've done this one!), and the last one could be reading before bed for a week and then after that you can find out which one works best for you and go from there.

I've gotten into the habit of reading while the washing machine's going (so about 35 minutes a pop). I like it because even though it's not always a super consistent on the dot time, the repetitiveness of the activity kind of has the Pavlovian effect of getting me to read; hear the sound of the washing machine, hands start itching for a book.

I find that romanticizing my daily reading routine HUGELY motivates me to actually read the books I accumulate. Sit down with a nice cup of coffee or tea and make yourself comfortable. I always like to open a window, turn on a cozy ambience, and light a candle. Taking the time to read for at least 30 minutes, makes me feel ALIVE and ready for the day 🌸✨

2 things that I did at different times in the past helped me a lot with creating a habit. First was when I used the subway to go to college, it was 30 minutes of me doing nothing, read a lot at this time. Second time was because of vitamin d lack (yes) in the start of this year, the doctor said I needed to sunbath everyday, so I woke up, layed down in front of a window and sunbathed while reading

i can't wait on the video about the livingroom inspired in the Emma 2020 movie! Also, i love the reading videos you make. I recently watched an older video of yours about how reading have become competitive and it made so much sense, its not about what you read, or the quality of your reading, or even your interaction with it, it's all about the numbers! So when i see you say that it's comon to drop off books i feel embraced hahahaha'. It just makes me feel like i cant take reading as a maraton run, cause that will exaust me in the process, but thinking about having annotations, impressions, seasonal books... It cheers me up!

I did read at all my last couple years of school (outside of required reading) so when I graduated I had to make a routine from scratch, so I kind of understand!! really only one thing helped, I had a specific routine around reading. it was always 4pm, summer at the time, and I'd make myself Tea, grab a blanket, grab a book and go sit down in a the field by my house!! usually no phone, just the book. I found having a specific order or events really helped bc once I set it in motion I would do the rest automatically, and once I actually go the where I was going to read I'd had time to shift my brain into reading mode. I'm not sure if this will help but good luck creating your own routine!!

There’s a Mexican booktuber called El Librero de Valentina who does a reading challenge to make reading a habit, you just need to define a number of pages or amount of time to read everyday. Beginners start with 10 pages or ten minutes, and the goal increases depending on what you want to achieve. But, the secret is trying it for a full month 😉

That sweater is amazing. I've read 75 books this year so far, and I'm scheduled to hit 144 (though I'll probably go higher so I have books set up for the beginning of next year). I run a book blog (Author Unpublished) and do book reviews professionally, and I schedule 2 a week. so far, I'm on track. A lot of what I read are indy books or advanced reader copies from publishers/authors, so most of the stuff I read isn't yet published for sometimes months after I get my hands on it - which makes it incredibly difficult to share recommendations with friends that can't get their hands on a copy for a while. It's even worse when you finally find a really good book that has a sequel promoted after the epilogue.. but you're still waiting for the first book to be fully published, so you know that sequel is going to be a year away... it is absolute torture! lol. Our book tastes differ greatly, but in general, I just plain love books. Everyone should read more!
@jewelloveslife
@jewelloveslife 3 жыл бұрын
how did you get into book reviews? did your blog come first or the job?
@DesertBloomBettas
@DesertBloomBettas 3 жыл бұрын
@@jewelloveslife Blog first, sort of. it's actually exceptionally easy to get into. There are a lot of websites like edelweiss booksiren, and netgalley that offer free advanced reader copies to readers in exchange for an honest review of the book. It's easier to get ahold of them if you have an audience or social media presence, but just about anyone can do it. I started about 8 years ago now, and it's still something I do for fun alongside copy editing. there are some forums and things where you can get paid per review - but you have to be careful about it, because some book retailers, like amazon, don't allow paid reviews.

Christina Sandu actually wrote 'The Union of Synchronized Swimmers' in Finnish, and translated it into English herself! I read it (upon listening to the pod) and found that out after the fact; it's interesting to have an author translate their own book and have the most accurate translation as there is always a question of accuracy when a text is translated by someone else.

There's this thing called "elastic habits" that might help you get back into a reading habit. You pick something you want to make a habit, then you decide what your normal goal would be, say to read for 30 min. Then pick an easy variation of it, say to read 1 page, and an elite variation, say to read 2 chapters. The easy and elite variations are for days that are either sub-normal when you're struggling or that are exceptional when you're on a roll. Apart from these 3 vertical variations you also have lateral options that still count towards the same habit. Say novels are your main angle. Then, reading poetry, or drama, or graphic novels, or in a café, or anything to do with your shelves and how you organize them, or ... you get the idea. You could even give each lateral option its own vertical variations (say, 1 poem for easy days, 5 poems for a normal day, and 5 poems and some analyzing / journaling about each for exceptional days). All lateral options (and their vertical variations) count towards your habit, give you flexibility and allow you to maintain a winning streak. Stephen Guise talks about it in his book of the same name.

At the beginning of this year I was quite depressed, and I got back into the habit of reading by doing so somewhere other than my bedroom (I used to lay on my brother's bed while he worked on his computer) and putting a timer on! On good days I set it for 50 minutes and on worse days for 30 or even 20. I also calculated how many pages per minute I read, cause I was curious! Just a neat little bonus! Thank you so much for all the content you're creating despite the times, Ariel, it's kept me going lately 💖✨ Keep up the great work!! 💕

I’ve been silently watching your video’s since your first bookshelf video back in 2013, back then I was only 15, a high school student in my small country in Europe, dealing with loads of stuff by escaping in fiction. Reading and writing. Your passion for reading and books has resonated with me so much and it kinda felt like I’ve been growing up with you? When I lost touch with my love for books and reading and writing, your own love for it always reignited mine. Since you bought your own house, making video’s from a space that is just so much YOURS, idk, I feel like a proud younger sister or something? Now I just turned 23 and I still feel the same joy and love from both reading stories and your videos and enthusiasm. Just, thank you for everything you’ve done and been doing. I struggled with actually reading classics. So I made it a goal that I read a chapter (or a manageable amount of pages if there were long chapter) a day. I could continue reading more if I wanted to but I could also read whatever I wanted after and it meant I read more in general because I had to read that chapter. I've fallen off it for the moment because I'm studying again so I only want to read things I really enjoy but will eventually go back to it once I'm done.

my main "reading" goal for 2022 is to BUY LESS BOOKS!!! I have about 160 books that I've bought but haven't read yet (it got out of control after I got a kindle bc there are ebook sales all the time), and based on my average reading per year, that will take me 6 YEARS to finish! I don't think I can read much more than I already do, 30-35 per year seems to be my sweet spot, so I seriously need to stop making that pile bigger.

I also just bought a house at the end of last year and found it difficult to find time to read because there’s always some project or chore to do (not to mention that I mostly used to read on the bus on the way to work but now I’m remote working and I’ve read less than I ever have this past year and a bit..) but putting some time aside at the start of the day to read is working great for me so far!

If you're still obsessed with LMM in June you could totally hop over to PEI and attend the biennial L.M.Montgomery conference, I've been there and hope to come again and it's just the best! I have a "read 30" item on my daily list, read either 30 minutes or 30 pages. And just over the last year or so I've just opened new reading spots all around the house. On a pillow on the stairs, on a blanket in front of the open veranda doors, breakfast table, new chair in front of the bookshelves, couch in the bedroom I've never used before etc. I like that thus I can pick my preferred time and place to read every day.

When I decided to get back into reading a couple of years ago, I set myself a rule that whenever my boyfriend would play Counter Strike, I would read for the duration of his game. Since it's something he used to do regularly (several times a day), it really helped me get back into it. For the past year though, I've been setting up reminders along the day so I stay on track of my daily tasks, and "Read 50 pages" is one of them.

a while ago you made a video about reading every night before bed. i picked up that habit after watching your video, and it stuck! :D yes being in bed makes me sleepy, but i still get valuable reading time in and it helps me wind down at the end of the day. i also try to start my day reading in bed. it has the reverse effect, it helps me wake up! :)

To regain my habit of reading, I started reading every night at 8:30pm in bed until tired. It can be for 30 minutes to 90 roughly. Depending on my interest level or if I get absorbed in a book it will be longer or just a short half hour read due to a busy day or general tiredness. It has worked great for me, hopefully you can create a habit that works well for you and you’ll be able to stick with it!

Over the last year or so I’ve started cycling to work instead of getting the train so I lost my commute reading time. To get it back I’ve added in 30 minutes reading to my morning routine (I am a disgusting morning person) before I leave the house, and I’m enjoying it so much

i recently started reading as a hobby again, just this month. i know about myself that super short term goals dont work for me, so i try for about 50 pages a day but i dont like to hold myself so strictly to that. my main goal was to read 3 books a month because that felt attainable but not crazy....ive already read 7 books this month.

Honestly, make your goal so easy you can’t not do it. Like, 4 pages a day. Once you have a book in your hands everyday you will want to read so much more.

The one thing I do to create a reading habit is switching to reading whenever I catch myself spending time in social media. I think it’s a more valuable way to spend my precious time whenever I’m off work.

I actually had a lot of luck forming a reading habit! I would read during my 30 minute break time, every day I was at work, and it worked really well for me! Unfortunately, my boss started scheduling me for shorter shifts, though, so now I only get a 10 minute break and it’s not quite long enough:/

my best tip for adding a new habit is finding ways to make it an important step between doing things or completing your day, like I got biking into my routine by making it my only way to get to work
