No. The characters didn't "deserve" jail time. Simply because they were seen as annoying which is essentially why they were given jail time and went to court. It was just another example of how ridiculous and unrealistic the show had become. And that was the reason Jerry killed it. The first four seasons were great and then it became a ridiculous clown show with completely unrealistic scenerios and 4 clowns just screaming all the time. All that was missing was the scene with all the characters coming out of a tiny car with Red bulb noses.

That final scene with the button conversation, the camera slowing panning back, the slight tiff beat, "Haven't we had this conversation before?..." The recall of the very first line. The ending was a masterpiece. Compare it to Modern Family's ending, which was all sentiment and tears. These characters had no place to go but jail. It was the only way to stop the mayhem (and it was mayhem, even if hilarious) they caused. The writers of the show were honest enough to acknowledge that. The best, most meaningful comedy involves characters who lack the skill set to perform a given task, but they obliviously try and try and fail again. Like Costello trying to figure out who's on first. That ultimately reflects our (tragic) human condition. The Seinfeld ensemble were characters who lacked the skills to succeed at almost any basic human relationships. It would have been a horrible violation of these wonderfully flawed characters, if they wound up with a group hug.

@KesselRunner6065 жыл бұрын
The best sit-com scenario is when dysfunctional people are *stuck* together. And the Seinfeld crew are at heart, really nasty people. In a normal American sitcom you would get episodes where they all come together and realise they really care about each other; George would go to hospital and they gather to support him; Kramer would disappear and they would get together and talk about how worried they are; Elaine would find the love of her life and get married, and they would all be at the wedding with tears in their eyes. Seinfeld didn't do that. These guys were F# ups, and they were stuck with each other, not because they were "best friends" but because no-one else in their right minds would hang around people like this for too long. It's one of the reasons George Costanza was and still *is* THE *greatest* sit-com character of all time. He's a fundamentally shallow, selfish, neurotic person, and he never stopped being one. And he is *glorious.* Having the gang stuck together in a cell, talking about nothing, was - for me - a genius way to end the series.

Part of the distaste, I would bet, comes from some of the falling out the cast had gone through during the last two seasons. Jason Alexander and Michael Richards were very unhappy that they weren't going to see a dime from any future Seinfeld syndication. JLD probably would have also been upset if she wasn't already an heiress. Larry and Jerry didn't give them a sniff of money beyond their actors fees and it left things sour.
@loganentertainment18144 жыл бұрын
What people don't talk about is why the Seinfeld characters have the personalities that they have. Jerry lived a life with loving parents, but they drive him nuts to where he doesn't want to be around them and he doesn't care about anyone but himself at times, George lived a life where his parents constantly argue and never seem to support him in any way, and Elaine lived a life where it seems she only had her dad sense we've never seen her mom. It does seem that her dad is a little bit mean, but he didn't seem all that bad; however, it seems he didn't do enough parenting that could have made Elaine a more stable women. As for Kramer, he seems to only have a mom that didn't teach him that he can't always rely on people all the time. For example, Kramer hardly ever works, always relies on others for food, and he constantly gets into trouble with no consequences, sometimes. As for Newman, we don't really know why he's the way he is, but we do know is that he likes Elaine and sometimes he hates Jerry. My guess is that Elaine had to choose between Jerry and Newman. She went with Jerry, breaking Newman's heart, and from that point on, he's hated Jerry ever sense. Why Jerry hates Newman, my theory is that Newman has something to do with Jerry and Elaine breaking up, but that's just a guess??? Without a doubt, the characters have had bad parenting that created their personalities that make them the way that they are, but there is no excuse to why they go to jail for all the bad things that they did in the past. When in doubt, there is at least some people in the world that don't let their past effect their life today, and in the future. It's called letting go, but sometimes it isn't that simple. None the less, Seinfeld was an amazing show while it lasted. :)

I still think this was Larry David's final middle finger to NBC...he knew the episode was bad, he knew fans wouldnt like it, but he was still mad because the network kept the show going despite him leaving 2 years ealier, so he came back with the sole purpose of writting a shitty ending. You can see some "inside jokes" in the episode, like the jabs at NBC executives pushing for Elaine and Jerry to be a couple, or that the episode has a "lesson" by the end ("be nice or you are going to jail"), and the finale takes a giant dump in those two things Larry kept fighting NBC for 7 years. In the finale George and Jerry hug, Elaine tells Jerry she loves him, and by end, they "learned their lesson"...you think this was all a coincidence? It was Larry David telling NBC "here, have the show you always busted my balls to make"

What's funny is that Seinfeld got one more episode after the series finale. It's them in the future, and even if they were in prison for a year, they're still the same as before. Classic Seinfeld. :) XD

I like the ending. They got what they deserve and it was funny. People usually hate on the last episode of any show because of the fact it is ending. They get salty.

Believe it or not the reason why people did not like the last episode was from that last shot with the camera pulling out, that's a very sad depressing morbid camera maneuver used to indicate the destruction or Devastation or end or death of something as you slowly pull out and the people just float away into the distance. I'm surprised they didn't realize that that was the thing that made it feel emotionally depressing as an end, it was actually a clever idea to have them and the same conversation with how it began but the camera angle and Lighting and everything was in a more upbeat happy new beginning in the coffee shop or their apartment versus in a cold prison cell as if they are almost waiting to die even though they are supposed to get out in a year oh, so the audience feels that true goodbye ending or when you're in a car waving goodbye to somebody your perspective is your pulling away leaving them as they go off into the distance like when I used to wave goodbye to my grandparents in the backseat of the car as we drove off and they would get smaller and smaller as we pulled away which is exactly what that camera pullback represents.

Looper - You forgot to mention that the last episode of Seinfeld aired twice because the day it originally aired was the day Frank Sinatra died. NBC re-aired the episode a week later.

They are all narcissists, so they will never change. They are like a narky cult, or family, feeding off each other's energy. Entitled af, no empathy, manipulative and intelligent🙂How I loved that show! So brilliant. Now I realize they embodied all the vices and traits most normal people hate. It felt good to laugh and simultaneously sigh with relief that I wasn't like them. Or have we all just been deluding ourselves?😉

How I would have imagined it ending? They get sentenced to a week in prison. And Jerry does his stand-up routine on his last day, when the warden comes in to let him out... Warden: Mr. Seinfeld, your sentence is up. Jerry: My sentence is up? My words were that uplifting that they just went up? Warden: No, I mean, you've done your time. Jerry: I've done my time? No, I don't have a wind-up time clock or do you mean, you like my edition in TIME magazine. Warden: If you don't get off the stage, it's a life sentence. Jerry: A life sentence, you want me to sum up a sentence in my life... oh, that would be, a life about nothing. Warden: Mr. Seinfeld! Ends on a cliffhanger.

The ending was perfect. The Seinfeld characters were funny but thoroughly self-centered and unlikable. The finale essentially showed us what would happen if these characters existed in the real world, which was a great way to end the series.

They got arrested for the craziest reasons. And yes.... Seinfeld needs to return. Like I know it has through Curb Your Enthusiasm and A Super Bowl ad... But it needs to return and continue. It's possibly the greatest show ever... But The Finale wasn't as good as the most of the show and was funny but made me feel bad for them and yes it has continued in a sense but really needs to continue like I said.
@IamnotJohnFord3 жыл бұрын
I liked the ending because it was silly but what should have happened to such reprehensible people. They treated people like dirt for years with little or no negative effects to them. And, through it all not a one of them learned any lessons about life, not one of them became nicer, not one of them ever performed a selfless act, and not one of them ever showed remorse or guilt for wreaking the lives of others. Well, I guess they felt bad for all of 10 minutes until something shiny caught their eye.

It's even more stupid because the perpetrator was armed with a pistol (or hand in his pocket), and law in real life can't force you to endanger yourself.
@Soooooooooooonicable2 жыл бұрын
I thought the ending was totally appropriate. Just because they were the main characters doesn't mean that they good people. They were really just a group of rude, neurotic troublemakers. This finale was their long awaited comeuppance. Bringing back all the people they screwed with over the years was a great way to tie in the overarching series.
