THE ENGINE IS BROKE...NOW WHAT?? (My porsche 912 plan)

Since the engine needs a rebuild, it's time to make a plan. In this video I go over more information on the engine itself. Different options I'm considering to move forward with the motor.
I got a copy of the kardex to check and see if this is a numbers matching car. Be sure to watch the entire video to get some key details and possibly learn a little more about the brand.
There is always some kind of blindside, or twenty blindsides when restoring a classic car. I'm all smiles that I'm in a position to do this. I don't take it for granted.
Since I have a porsche 911, I'm not concerned making this car very fast. Originality is the number one goal.
As always, thank you for watching and the continued support.

First of all a big congratulations to you and Mrs. Gideon on the pending arrival of your child!!! That news certainly makes everything else pale in comparison! But also good news on the cardex! I also like your plan leaning towards another "donor" motor while taking your time working on the original motor. Having the paint, motor and transmission original could be very valuable some day down the road. If it matters your broken 912 motor sounds at the 3:30 time mark made the entire video worth watching! Peace to you and yours, congrats again to your family!

You found such a great example. Laser straight body from a dry climate and all numbers matching powertrain. All the important stuff is there, doesn't get much better than that on a near 60 year old car.

Hi Michael, I have a 912 Right Hand Drive car in the UK. 1968 same colour as yours, which I purchased when I was 25. I'm now 58 and have to say, "I would never part with it and it's going with me to the grave". My daughter thinks otherwise as we named her "Jessica Porsche", I'm probably to blame for this. The wife did not say "No" at the time, so I got away with it ! If nothing else the car will stay in the family. These early 912's are definitely more than the sum of the parts, but the drive ability when lowered for this year of car is amazing. I have never checked my numbers, one day I will find the time. Thank you for sharing how you managed to find your detail.

Another option is to find a Volkswagen Type 4 Engine to drive the car while you rebuild the 616. That is probably cheaper and easier to hot rod. Even when you're done with the original engine, it might be smart to keep it on a shelf while you enjoy the car without adding miles to the original engine. Thanks for the great videos.

Michael : Sensitive topic that I think would be of great interest to your subscribers: would you consider at some point discussing costs? including an estimate for your labor? You mentioned in this video 1000 man-hrs expended so far. Given you are an excellent mechanic but not a professional let's just say $80-$120 an hour for that plus parts cost to date + acquisition cost + motor rebuild cost + and an estimate to complete. Uhhhh.... it seems to me that number is heading towards $175 K. Can this be so ?
@michaelgideon6422
@michaelgideon6422 Жыл бұрын
I've thought about sharing costs. For now I'm not going to, but I may do that in the future. Thanks for the kind words. Professionals are going to be somewhere around $150 an hour on these cars. I think you're pretty close on labor, since I'm not a pro. I haven't added up the cost of parts just yet. I have a rough idea on the cost to rebuild the engine if I send it out. The total is not quite as high as that number, but its very high. Nothing about these cars is cheap. That's just the reality. With my time included, I'm significantly under water haha. I'm not selling so it doesn't bother me..that much. Thanks for watching Richard.

I agree with you covering your serial numbers, along with my love of 911s I also love vintage analog synthesizers (mostly Moog) they are currently fetching high $ , long story short my name, residing state and a list of all the Moogs that I own are on line ( Not Cool ). Just another great reason for privacy and another great video Michael, keep them coming and congratulations to you and your wife, I have 2 adult children one is a Kindergarten teacher and my daughter is a lighting designer for concerts. Hey Michael, congrats on the incoming addition to the family! What about a VW motor as a temporary replacement, for some reason I seem to remember that some 356 guys would use VW motors to preserve or rebuild their Porsche motor, I would think they could be had for a lot less money and easy to resell in SoCal. I'm not as familiar with the different types but heard that some area direct bolt up.
