One 16 year old kid in particular was engulfed in folklore, taking $1.2M worth of Porsches and luxury cars on high-speed chases and making a name for himself as being literally uncatchable and Sydney police knew him as simply “the Porsche Kid”. Bret Lindsay Capper made a career of taking 911’s both 964’s and classic models from their respective owners and taunt the police doing 200kmh through neighborhoods.

This happened in Yugoslavia in the 70s. A white 911 Targa was stolen from a famous Tennis player and was being driven by a very skilled driver outrunning the cops every evening. Vlada Vasiljevic or The Belgrade Phantom was his name and theres a movie made about him :D

Porsches were unstoppable back then. Nowadays almost all the major brands have sports cars/ supercars in their portfolio that are head to head with a modern Porsche but back then in their golden years a Porsche was something else. Back in the late 70s early 80s my dad told me the power and speed difference between a Porsche and regular bread and butter cars of the era was unreal. In the late 70s my dad had a VW Beetle for a few years before it fell apart on him. He bough the car with a dead engine for 100$ and a few favors and found himself a freshly rebuild engine for another 100$ or so DIYed it together in the driveway and he was actually really proud of that because the engine was from a VW Bus so it had a bit more displacement and more torque. He also said it would never overheat because it had an upgraded oil cooler fitted. Back then a 10-15 year old rusty beetle was a common car he said and if you had an uprated VW Bus engine fitted that didnt blow smoke and was running well you were the King of the Beetles. A new 911 Turbo was like an F1 car next to that!

I remember back then my dad bought a lot of Porsche calendars. I fell in love with Porsche just because looking into the pictures of the Porsches with its insides.
