Scott Joplin wasn't in Encylopedia Britannica in 1976 when I was greatly impressed with his opera Treemonisha (Caracas radio). Janis Joplin was. I think that Robert Redford movie helped popularize him. Genius.

You may not believe me but the original compositon had a tempo marking of 'not fast' as it was misunderstood by other composers to be a fast piece due to it being a ragtime piece, although he didn't want it to be played like that so he wrote not fast to stop people from playing it at 154 bpm

@@kelanibbotson2991 well, Scott joplin's maple leaf rag was set to be played at "tempo di Marcia", which is about 100 bpm. Scott is also famous for writing "It is never right to play ragtime fast" on some of his sheet music. When Joseph lamb was at Scott joplin's house, he played for him sensation rag, which was composed by Joseph lamb but was never published. Scott joplin then published sensation, and he seemed to really enjoy the piece. On the sheet music of sensation, it says "tempo di Marcia". Scott said to not play ragtime fast, but he indeed liked Joseph's song and published it with 100 Bpm on the sheet music. This is what I've heard.

Bravo, excellent performance! However, I play some of the rags (Entertainer, Weeping Willow, Easy Winners), and I take it at a much more relaxed tempo. I read your comments about tempi, and they were very interesting. I also noticed that you use very little sustain pedal. Anyway, very impressive, but not quite the way I play it -- not better or worse, just quite different.
