And while he doesn't seem to upload anymore, he has still mentioned in his streams (He semi regularly streams on twitch) that if he feels like making a new video he will make one. That's the reason he randomly uploaded an anime related video 4 years after the last one, and it was stll great. Demo will always have a soft spot in my heart for one of the youtubers that put the curent type of anime content on the map.

One of the biggest questions for any content creator, across any medium, is how long they will be remembered once they stop making content. I think Garnt's going to be remembered for an exceptionally long time as being one of the earliest GOATs of anime KZbin, and one of the first (or was he actually the first?) to start making an actual living off of anime KZbin content. The more serious videos he's done over the years really hit different, like "You'll Grow Out Of Anime...Eventually" (holy shit this was 6 years ago) and "The Anime that Inspired Me", among others.

Man, this video was a nostalgia trip and a half. I remember watching some of the early Mr Anime and Hard reviews back in middle school. It’s amazing to see how things have changed so much, and I’m definitely still missing the days before he adpocalypse ruined a lot of fair use content as we know it (RIP Misty Chronexia and most of the abridging community). One person you forgot to mention from the Blip/ThatGuywiththeGlasses days is Bennett the Sage. The dude was the first guy to do reviews of older and not as well like anime (thing Mad Bull 34 and the Devilman OVAs) and is still doing reviews/analysis videos to this day. The guy is one of the only reviews from the TTWTG era that survived the Channel Not Awesome fallout and do pretty well for himself. One more recent/honorable mention would be Kenny Lauderdale. All I need to say is that he made me aware of Chargeman Ken, and that’s more than legendary enough. XD

Digibro was such a huge part of my life a few years ago, and defined anitube for me. I, like many others, was absolutely obsessed with all of their content. I believe they had an enormous impact on the community that is understated here, in that they basically began the entire anitube analysis phase. The discussions around anime shifted drastically toward deeper critical analysis than just (relatively) surface-level discussion. Im glad to see Digi mentioned here, despite them being quite divisive and the rocky past between them and Garnt. I would love to see more content covering the history of anitube like this.

It's so strange to be in a sort of hybrid position. I've been watching anime content on and off for many years (I remember Garnt's job quitting + Patreon move announcement video). After over a decade of lurking and watching anime content creators, I'm now in the (small-scale "successful") beginnings of my own anime KZbin career. Like everything else internet-related, the insane boom of the internet means that there's no more "niche communities", for better or worse. Remember KZbin Rewind? I suspect this may the only "anime KZbin" history video made, but I'm really glad this video was made because this all happened in a time where there was nowhere to document the growth of a small community. I will never forget the first video i watched on your channel: Top 20 epically cool anime characters part 1. At the time, I was bullied alot for being an anime fan here in Kenya. Nobody understood it. Imagine being the only kid in a boarding school of 1000 students and nobody to talk to about anime for 4 years and being ridiculed and beaten because of it. My mum took me to a shrink "for still watching cartoons at my age". Your videos, gave me the strength to continue liking this thing called anime and that it was okay. Thank you so much for keeping on with the content all these years.

As someone new to being an anime centric channel I found this video to be pretty interesting. I had heard of a lot of the names you talked about in a lot of different places but enjoyed your take on it all. I'm curious what the future of this all looks like as it appears there's a lot of deep change in creators content and styles. I started out making a heavier load of anime reviews and talks but after having a lot of issues with using clips and such it's really taken a back seat to Japanese/anime gaming. There's a lot of things I want to do with anime topics but also a high risk with doing it.

"And supereyepatchwolf who seemed to come out of no where" Funny enough I witnessed his raise because I was a huge fan of the now ended "two best friends play" let's play channel. As john puts it on an episode of the best friendcast, woolie a member of two best friends play said "HunterXhunter sucks" John was listening to this episode of the podcast and got so mad that he started making anime videos just to prove woolie wrong. Both john and geof of mother's basement started off as weird side characters of two best friends play but then quickly grew more popular. Now they are great friends and on woolie's channel they have a video series called "gon in 30 seconds" where John forces woolie to watch hunterXhunter through outlandish situations.

This was back when mother's basement said he wanted to do half anime reviews and half video game reviews but the video game part died very quickly. I believe he only ever reviewed two games. I just find it super funny because this is why John's first video ever is about hunterXhunter, because the let's players he likes said it was bad.🤣

Honestly I got into English anitube through Garnt's videos. Back then there was a French group of voice actors that got the permission to translate his older videos and it was very successful in France. This led me to go look at his more recent videos and discover anitube. At this time, anime was actually bigger in French yt than in English, but there was a lot of growth since then in English content's popularity while French content stagnated, and it has shown. I missed a lot of the early days of anitubing but I've still been watching English content for about 5 years now so it feels pretty good to see what it became. And also, seeing Garnt's videos become more and more elaborate, his editing becoming more dynamic and his jokes becoming dumber and funnier at the same time truly made me happy.

I got into Anime community on all sites in late 2015. And I have to say; I miss a lot about the old community. As they weren't many videos banned or copyrighted. Let's not forget that people won't talk about the same show over and over again that just got released. Let's not forget the opinion and taste at that time was diverse. Because at that time the community made up of anyone who fond anime by random chances; people who got into Anime because their childhood show was still stuck inside their head or Japanese/Filipino who didn't had anyone in real life to share their experience with. I don't see anyone talk about Blue Exorcist, Escaflowne, Shakugan no Shana, Black Bullet, Darker Than Black or Inuyasha. Once in a while an obscure Anime that someone found would be talked about not just some Anime that was currently airing.

Looking at this as someone who's trying to get into the anitubing sphere, it was definitely a lot easier to get into it back during the early days of KZbin than it is now. Between the big anitubers, AMV creators, top 10 lists, reviewers, text-to-speech anime recaps, and so much more, unless you have some crazy editing skills and a semi-fresh approach to how you present your content, you'll be lucky if you get anywhere. But I do think it's still possible. You guys set the foundations for what good anime content should be. Someone's gotta fill in those shoes and continue the legacy ;)

The beginning of Anitube really started with a ying and a yang, then the first generation appeared. That just sounds so much like a lore you see in mythologies and, of course, anime 😂 Such an interesting history, I've watch anime and follow the subculture for a long time but didn't get into the western anitube circle until pretty recently. So it's quite cool to know how it evolved. I've pretty much only just been following some Taiwanese anime style artists and watching NicoNico videos reupload to KZbin this whole time until I got into the AniTube circle. Odottemita (dance cover) circle was the shit for me back in the early 2010s 😂😂

@@samuraijosh1595 ngl back then I just take my chances with Japanese titled videos on KZbin 🤣 Most of those are interesting enough to get reuploaded from Nico Nico. You can just browse around nico nico directly (might not even need an account). It definitely died off quite a bit imo. Not sure what you are into, but a good starting point is anime song covers (singing, dance, or instrument), since you most likely know what you'll get.
