Did you know that England’s ancient history is filled with mystery and intrigue, often explored in captivating documentaries? One famous tale is of the Beaker People, an ancient civilization that arrived in England around 2500 BC, bringing pottery, metalwork, and new burial customs. Their influence can still be seen today in iconic sites like Stonehenge, often featured in "ancient history documentaries" that unravel the mysteries of prehistoric Britain!

The history of England is rich and complex, stretching back thousands of years. One fun fact often highlighted in history documentaries is the influence of the Norman Conquest in 1066, a pivotal event in English history. When William the Conqueror of Normandy defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, he not only took the English throne but also brought dramatic cultural and political changes. The Normans introduced feudalism, reshaped the English language by infusing it with French, and built iconic structures like the Tower of London. This event marked the beginning of a unified English monarchy and the transformation of medieval England into a powerful kingdom.
@paulies5407
@paulies5407 3 ай бұрын
The aristocracy spoke nothing but french for three hundred years after 1066. Old English was a slang language spoken by the Saxons and Angles that lived primary as farmers outside London. Then the Black Death happened, 50% of the population of London died, and that’s when old proto-English mixed with french, creating the language we speak today

A fun fact about the history of England that ties into "history documentary" is that the iconic British history documentary series "A History of Britain" by historian Simon Schama helped to reignite public interest in the country’s rich past. This series, which aired in the early 2000s, captivated audiences with vivid storytelling, showcasing pivotal moments such as the Norman Conquest, the Tudor dynasty, and the English Civil War, turning historical events into compelling visual narratives that brought England’s past to life for a new generation.

Even though I was born in Florida and live in the USA, that does not retract from my English heritage at all.

When you say English, what do you mean? That 99% of your ancestry in 1500 was English? 99% pre Norman conquest? 99% pre Viking invasion? 99% pre Roman conquest? Or even 99% pre Celtic? There’s a huge difference between all those claims, I’m trying to understand what you’re claiming your ancestry to be. 100’000 years ago all of your human ancestors would be in Africa, but what is it that you are attempting to claim 🤷‍♂️

_The Last remaining nation of the Old World..._ If you think about it, you realize England is in Reality one of the oldest continously existing Nation states in the world that still endures today. Certainly among the Great powers. It has maintained its democratic institutions and system of government for longer than any other Great Power in modern history. The Stability of England and Britain is what enabled its prosperity and the very existence Western Word. The only other nation that even comes close, is the United States itself, some 250 years old, continuous. Which itself is of course descendant from Britain. England and its insititutions and System of Government in many ways are the foundation of the modern western world, probably responsible for most of the major democracies in the world today. Giving birth to the Anglosphere and the other dominions of the Empire. But also Europe itself, because eventually of course, it will be the Britain and Its Anglosphere including the United States that will go on to liberate Europe in the Second world war setting up the modern European democracies as well. So in many ways, we can trace the foundations of the modern democratic western world right back to England and the very earliest of its institutions. If anything its remarkable endurance and stability, when the continental powers were collapsing into civil war and revolution every few decades...Just contrast with France which flip flopped between Republic, to autocracy, to monarchy, to dictatorship, back to monarchy, and just utter violent chaos in between all in the span of a few decades...to Stoic moderate Britain that endured for more than 300 years with the exact same institutions. Not a single coup or revolution in between. (The way i see it, the French revolution paid lip-service to the ideals of liberty and democracy, flashy but surface level. But the true foundations of western democracy, the ones that would create lasting legacies and democratic insititutions that would endure for Generations to come were those of Britain and America. They were set up by much deeper roots and foundations, not upon the ideals of revolutionary fervor or factionalism, but rational, moderate, compromise, division of power, and careful foresight. Indeed in due course it would be the alliance of Western Nations set up by Britain and America that would in turn liberate and restore France's democracy itself, and indeed much of Europe and subsequently the world. And it all ultimately ties its roots back to this little island of ours...) Remarkable. No other Great Power can claim such a feat. If there's any reason why Britain became The Global superpower, and deserved to be, its that reason alone. Its no wonder then that it should be Britain and its descendants in the form of the United States that should go to lead the Western World.

England was destroyed by the Normans in 1066, there was no King or Queen of England after 1066 these were Norman Kings and Queens as most English nobility had been wiped out by the Normans, and these Normans spoke French.

The Normans did a number on the English nobility, true, but never mind, the Norman French gradually became 'English' over time and there was Dutch and German 'nobility' to take over in the centuries to come. People are still bowing and doffing their hats to them to this day.

The country wasn't just the nobility,, the normans eventually followed English laws followed English customs, and spoke in English,, they were desperate to be seen by the English,, as English,, to the point Edward 111, had the dragon flag of Wessex flown before the battle of crecy
