If we took mental health seriously, we would say that people like Chester died following a long and courageous battle with depression.

Absolutely. Imagine fighting against your own mind every minute of the day for years on end. Chester tried everything. He did therapy, took medication, tried drugs and shared his thoughts through writing and singing. Even after all of that, it was still too much for him. That is no way cowardly.

Amen. Suicide is not only a symptom but it's also a solution, seemingly, the last and only one left for a desperately ill person. That person ended their life most likely hating themself amongst other horrible thoughts, what a horrible way to take your last concious breaths..

Society always taught us that money doesn’t buy happiness, but the second a celebrity takes their own life they are mocked. Chester Bennington’s music helped me through dark times all my life, and when someone who helped you through all that couldn’t go on it seems even more daunting for you. I can’t understand why people don’t take mental health more seriously. The brain is a vital organ no different than your heart.

Yes everyone needs to be coddled and babied day in/day out like sorry everyone is different, some people are beyond gone and all this sudden caring about "mental health" is giving me mental health problems. If people wanted to actually solve this type of thing they would have already but some of these so called mental health problems are either incurable or systematically put in place. Oh yeah and its fucking art, so many have some form of mental health it is apart of how the art shapes. Can't baby everyone forever but that's exactly what organizations are trying to do pushing this all the time.

Money DOES buy happiness. The claim that it doesn't is such a load of BS. We live in a world where your options and your worth are defined almost purely by money. With money you can have freedom, health, good nutrition, comfortable living for you and yours, fun & games, travel & experiences, you can avoid all kinds of misery, etc. etc. - freedom and happiness It's not a 100% cure for unhappiness, but it's at least a 98% one.

As a metal head with PTSD and acute anxiety, I completely concur. The BIG problem is that mental illness is only seen in music and entertainment as a cash cow. That’s why “teenage angst” became popular in the 1990s and “emo” in the 2000s. I hate the terms “teen angst” and “emo” now because the music industry is comically minimizing, invalidating, and making fun of serious emotional and mental anguish anyone can feel at ANY AGE. Music is a great way to deal with emotional and mental trauma, but the American entertainment industries by and large seek to both normalize and monetize it. That is the other part of this crisis that needs to be addressed.

Yes! That's why people don't like Billie Eilish because they say she's making mental illness "trendy". It's not a trend. So many people struggle with mental illness and I'm glad younger people have someone who isn't willing to sugar-coat their own sadness. It's nice to have a musician that helps you not feel alone, and since she's pretty mainstream, it may help the stigma around mental illness.

People at school once stole my sweater, making me walk around in a t-shirt, revealing my arms, with scars and cuts. People laughed at me, told me I was an attention seeker, they told me I should just do it instead of searching for attention. I almost did that day, but here I am, having therapy, trying to get better. So if you read this and you feel like ending it all, please, talk to someone, find a different solution. @Danny Dircio Buzzo(as well as Dale) is comfortingly well adjusted. He's always been cynical and just a fan of music. Melvins never hit it "big", at least not for any length of time. They're workhorses, blue collar guys doing the job. Mental illness is probably very much a factor in bands seeking fame, but those bands don't seem to last 30 years. It's not a judgement, just an observation. Cornell hit me harder than I expected. FWIW, he'd had some alcoholism in his past. An example of two wildly different front men.

Agree, but... Rich people have access to high quality doctors and medication, so they have a chance to beat cancer. Poor people don't, and they suffer and die in horrible conditions. Same goes for mental illness. I know a lot of people who suffer from depression and who simply can't afford therapy and/or drugs. I don't know how it works in USA or Europe, perhaps there you can get help for free, but in my country (Russia) psychotherapy is luxury. You have to have a good job, and many depressed people don't have any at all.

The truth about mental health is that it can be worse for people who do have “a lot”: the person suffers even more because they feel guilty about feeling the way they do when they are better off than so many others. It’s insidious, disturbing and difficult to deal with no matter who you are. We all face issues that are the product of our settings, but they aren’t “rated”. At least that’s how I feel sometimes.

So I am now being assessed for Schizophrenia, that my psychiatrist, following 3 episodes of psychosis, believes is probable. I am leaving an early stage of the pathogenesis, pathological origins, of the illness and I believe that the premorbid Schizophrenia is a pure darkness that devours the light in our heart. Not just depression. I was trapped, being blamed for making my parent's life difficult. Symptoms include a lack of academic, career, and social life. For 14 years, I just watched the world go by. I did not have the cognitive capability to interact with it. I was shut off. No one seemed to care. As I said my parents blamed me for my experience, which is ironic, as their behavior may of been the stressor. In the beginning, I was told to be more like Robin Williams, I couldn't be funny. Then around a decade later, I was told I was too intense. People were scared of me. They got they wanted, I hardened, but they didn't seem to like it. It seems quite indecisive. But what do you expect? In tribal communities, if you do not contribute, then you are removed from the tribe. My mental illness, Schizophrenia, means I have had a significantly difficult time for a long period of time. I couldn't contribute to the group. So I was removed. I believe it is about time, that the more socially recognised illnesses like depression and anxiety, recognise their fortunate position, and start being concerned about people who suffer with other illnesses. I don't know if you segregate yourself from us true crazies. I don't really care. But there are many more mental illnesses than anxiety and Depression, and PTSD. But those ones are the ones that seem to always be talked about. We only get talked about when some one shoots up a school, or other atrocity. We are the scapegoat society uses, to hide from it's own failings.

A quick, related, personal story from a musician (myself): In July of 2018, I saw Foo Fighters in concert. I went with my girlfriend (whose real name I will not disclose. But, for convenience's sake, I'm going to call her Suzie) and her mom. The show was absolutely fantastic. If you ever get the chance to see them, you absolutely should. I really enjoyed their performance. After the concert, as we were walking to the car, I started feeling an anxiety attack slowly seeping up. When we got in the car and were on the highway going home, Suzie notices that something clearly isn't right with me. She asks what's wrong, and I told her that I didn't know. I just started crying for no distinguishable reason. Now, she KNEW that I had mental health problems, and there were many instances of her saying stuff like "Why can't you just stop feeling like that?" thinking that she was helping. Then there were also many other times where she would get pissed at me for being depressed. In this instance, it was the latter example. She made it seem like it was about her and got annoyed saying things like "You wouldn't be upset if you were with your friends." This made me cry even harder because out of every single person on the planet, I wanted her to support me the most. She made me even more upset because she didn't know how much more I cared about her than my friends (which was a huge mistake). I went to many psychologists and even got medication to help me control my outbreaks. But she still did not truly know how to support me and make me feel better. A few months later, we both decided to go to the same college as music majors. I didn't explicitly make this decision because she was going there too; I already wanted a music degree from that school, and she did too. Soon, she started developing the same depressive, anxiety-related emotions that I had. I decided to do the thing that she never did and comfort or distract her. I never once put her down for it because I knew what it was like. Looking back, maybe her mental health got really bad as a karma-acting way of revenge for the way she treated my depression. Shortly after winter break, I decided to break up with her. I felt that a relationship with two people who were both giant mental wrecks just was not healthy for us. This sent me into a deep depressive spiral that was so bad that I dropped out of college and spent a week in the mental health ward at the hospital. I haven't communicated with her at all since a year ago. So I have no idea how she is doing now. I don't know if she has changed into a more considerate person, or if she is still as self-centered as she was during our relationship. But I have had many thoughts of her since then both good and bad. The good being the little things that made me love her to begin with (talking about music, acting childish and weird, teaching her how to play Pokemon). The bad being all the times that she has been self-centered and wanting me to never even mention the name of any other person I know and hang out with. But no matter if they are good or bad, they are constantly there. This is what happens to people when their mental health isn't taken seriously. I can tell you this as someone who has gone through this shit first-hand. People do not truly know what it is like to wish you had the energy to do stuff as simple as getting out of bed. It isn't laziness; it's depression. The only people who can truly understand what that's like are people who have experienced it, such as myself. There are those who completely dismiss it as just a lot of sadness and say stuff like, "Can't you just... not be depressed?" If it was that easy, it would have already been done. Those people think your mental health and suicidal thoughts are selfish. But that just makes the mental health of the person WAY worse. TO THOSE WHO KNOW SOMEONE STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL HEALTH: It is your job to be there for them, and to never criticize them for it. All you have to do is be there for them if they want to talk and rant on about how they are feeling. It is as simple as making them feel needed (not just simply telling them that they are). Take time to be one-on-one with them doing something they like. Maybe go with them to a concert, play a video-game, or watch a movie. If you are going to do this with other people in the mix, make sure that they also understand everything I said above as well as making them not feel like a third wheel. Once they feel like a third wheel, they'll start saying stuff like, "It's okay. I am not needed. The world doesn't need me here." TO THOSE WHO ARE PERSONALLY STRUGGLING WITH THEIR OWN MENTAL HEALTH: You are not alone by a HUGE number. A massive number of people in the world are/have dealt with the same shit you are going through, even if it isn't on the same level. The biggest mistake you can make as a struggling person is not reaching out and asking for help. Tell your family, or someone close to you that you trust wholeheartedly about what you are feeling and that you want to feel better. If they really love you and care about your well-being, they will help you find the resources you need. They can sit and talk, they can help make you an appointment with a therapist, and, in extreme situations, bring you to the hospital if necessary. Since this is a rock/metal news page, I'm gonna close off with some lyrics reflecting what I have said: "In these moments of loss and torment When the vast skies don't seem to call to you When the weight of this world bears down And the stars have fallen like tears I am with you always, From the darkness of night until the morning I am with you always, From life until death takes me" ("Always" by Killswitch Engage)

Chester unfortunately passed way on my 17th birthday a few years ago, and ever since it's been so hard for me to listen to Linkin Park. Chester and the band helped me get through my anxiety and poor self esteem while I was in highschool. I was devastated to hear the news that he had passed away due to mental illness. It's been hard trying to listen to their music after he died, not just because it was on my birthday, but because of how much I had admired him. Talking even just seeing someone to speak about what's going on (whatever it may be) is SO important. The longer we bottle up our demons, the more they torment us and the more we suffer. Rest in Peace Chester, you will always live on in our hearts...you are the reason why I am the person who I am today. Thank you

You know what draws me to metal, hardcore, punk, etc? There's a side to mental illness that even advocates won't talk about, but more extreme music does- the more aggressive side. Irrational hatred, loathing, paranoia and so on. I mean, self directed hatred, that's easy and safe. It's easy to be sympathetic to someone who feels sad. But someone who is lashing out at everyone and everything is just an asshole, right? But, think about it for just a second- ever known someone with a mental illness who didn't lash out irrationally, at least from time to time? Ever consider that might be suffering from mental illness just as much as someone who is filled with self loathing? That it might be the same thing? So, now, name me the way we treat that side- incarceration, usually. So- yeah, if we're going to talk about mental illness and extreme music- why not mention the one thing that it's got on everything else- the cathartic release of the more aggressive side of mental illness....
@28Pluto
@28Pluto 4 жыл бұрын
Any therapist or counselor worth listening to will instantly know that people that lash out only do so because they're in pain. This is a well known way to easily identify someone with mental issues. No one creates pain unless they are IN pain. Also to touch on your other point, for many people exercise also acts as a release for anger the same way that metal music does. I know I get the same rush of negativity leaving my body when I work-out as when I listen to my favourite metal. So even people that dislike metal can still get that same cathartic rush of releasing pain with vigorous exercise or dancing or even yoga. Bonus points if you listen to metal while working out!!

I meet a girl that suffered from anxiety according to her, she was pretty “normal” but I started to listen her struggles to concentrate in exams, cry in middle of the night and sleep at whatever hour and her stories of her childhood, I liked her a lot for her personality and really fell in love for her but suddenly it started to get over me and I went insane trying to figure out how to get in her heart over all that bullshit she had in her head. I almost destroyed my college's season cuz I was freaking out. Mental illness is so bad it makes you treat people like shit unintentionally, and is contagious, one person being ill can make the ones around go insane as well...we don’t talk anymore but I will never stop loving her and hope the best till we meet again.

We'll be able to take it seriously when we have a society that takes it seriously and actually provides support and health care access to people. Even though things have theoretically improved, we're still getting the opposite message from society in every single way... unless you're a celebrity, then people at least pretend to care about you when you die. But all those promises and hotlines and shit many people post when someone dies are just that, social media displays, shallow, empty, and hypocritical. It's definitely not just a metal problem, the entire system is fucked. The beliefs people still largely cling to are fucked. Music, metal, just happens to be a very popular outlet for what mainstream society still can't accept. And they will probably never accept that it doesn't just "go away," no matter what you do and how far you get. Fixing all of this depends on fixing a broken society that doesn't want to be fixed. It wants you to work, medicate, and even be imprisoned.

I love the analogy you used when describing mental health issues. Thank you so much for doing this video highlighting mental illness. I lost my nephew to suicide 18months ago. A loving dad with a great job and family. It came totally out of the blue. On talking to other family and his friends tho a clearer picture began to emerge. Individual small things didn’t ring alarm bells at the time. Putting all these individual incidents together tho showed it was obvious he was struggling. He always came across as a happy go lucky loving dad and husband so we had no cause to think he was so close to the edge. Im 54, I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety all my adult life. I’ve had counciling many times when things get too much. I practice meditation and self hypnosis. I also take medication for both anxiety and depression. I have periods when I’m ok, I cope with life, work, family fine but I also have periods when I can’t cope and feel I’m drowning in a sea of anxiety and bad thoughts. It’s a horrible illness which should be treated like any other illness but sadly in some places still has a stigma attached to it. Things are improving greatly tho and mental health is more and more being accepted and treated in the same way as physical or physiological illnesses. Again- thank you so much for this vlog, I hope it and others like it will help those people who are suffering atm and encourage them to seek help. Much love from scotland 🤗💕🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Metal/hard rock has been my 'therapy' for so many years. It's not only a therapeutic outlet for me - it's also like seeing family when I go to live concerts. It pains me to see and know that members of my 'family' may be suffering as I have been through many years of battling depression myself. I now work in the mental health field trying to support others struggling with their own mental health issues. It is absolutely imperative that we support each other and assist with helping ones in need to find the extra support and services that are out there. I miss Chester Bennington very very much, because way before the dark days of 2017, I’ve known Linkin Park for so long, and I haven’t realized myself that I’ve been so touched strongly because both Chester and LP have inspired me so much more. Chester is the reason why I enjoyed music so much and the reason why I wanted to uplift my life and maybe even helping people too. The truth is that I’ve never heard or even realized about mental health really until that dark days comes on July 2017. I’ve always dreaming of one of these days that I’ll get a chance to meet LP for their future tour or even any of those tour. But when that day comes, it shatters so many pieces on the floor and it hard for me to stop cry on the inside of how much I miss Chester and picked up some pieces left. Days/months go by, I’m trying to learn myself of how could I learn of be a bit positive as I can, until when Linkin Park had performed in Hollywood Bowl, it changed my whole life. Not just as amazing show, but it also helped me to open up way more of my feelings and learned to help each other. Even Chester’s wife Talinda Bennington had introduced the program to help many people who dealt with depression or mental illness. Therefore, I began to do some research and understand of what is Mental Health really is. I do wanna say thank to Talinda for helping me understand what is mental health is. I miss Chester very much, which it’s why I’ll always to hold on to his memory to honor him, support Chester’s family, friends, and his wife Talinda, and always helped as many people who needed help. If there’s anyone who dealt with depression or mental illness, just wanna let you know that you’re not alone, we’re all here together. And most importantly be proud of who you are and never be ashamed of what you’ve been going through.

Uau, really profund. When I was young I suffered from depression, and its true, no money, approvall or any that superficial things will make any difference because when depressed the world just looks completly different. I remember feel alone even being sorrounded by lots of people. And then you listen other people not taking it seriously. The way that i went out of it? First, chemical inbalance. I started to eat healthy and exercise, altought I wanted to stay bed all day. Exercise and healthy food helps brain recover from thechemical inbalance. Psychological? You really have to talk with someone (contact a doctor please) and being completely, i repeat, completely open. Its frightening but it makes much better that self loathing and is actualy what makes you wake from that state. Everytime you put what you think out, you relax, believe me. Also at first just try to survive day by day, like a drug addict does to let drugs. If you are felling really, really, really bad, at first just try to survive day by day. I end this comment by telling you that is possible to recover and being able to deal with low points much better. And much more important, contact a doctor and tell everything. Really everything you feel.

Alexander To me that’s the most frustrating part. I have an extremely cause and effect mind-set, so when it’s hard, it’s always frustrating because I know I have nothing to be depressed about. So why the F am I always feeling I have a cloud over me? I constantly asked my self that in highschool, but it just made me angrier that the answer to that question was that it was just depression.

You spoke some real shit there man. I have BPD and Manic Depression and you really hit the nail on the head here. It's a real thing, but it's so easy to brush off and say "just get over it" or "that's not a real problem". These people wouldn't last a day in our shoes man. Each day you press on and survive is a new victory. Each day you don't let those demons get the best of you is another day won. I am going to share this on my Facebook and I hope that by doing that, I can maybe at least reach one more person. Mental Health is no joke. The pain you can feel inside on them dark days can be some of the worst pain you'll ever feel. I hate how people think it's made up. It's not fair😢 but to all those that who have a mental illness and you come to this video, please remember that it is a real thing and never EVER let anyone try to tell you otherwise.

A psychologist once said that mental illness and artistic talent are very close enough to trigger them both off together, I hope I have explained that right, the more talented they are the more likely they are to want to end it all! Everyone uses drugs to numb thoughts and past experiences that you don’t want to remember or if you life sucks through no fault of your own etc. Asking for help is not a weakness people please talk about stuff and get help!💞🙏🏻✝️😘🤘💕🤪💞✝️😘😘🤘

@th3unmaker

Exactly. If chemical imbalance were the real reason for depression, then adjusting substances that are naturally occurring inside the body by diet or supplement would fix it. As it stands, depression is treated with drugs and chemicals, which either create a mild high, or mask the emotions.

Wow, what an amazing video. I suffer with depression/anxiety and tried to take my own life several times and still battling with it. Now I'm very open about it and have great support both friends/family and clinical. Heavy music has been a massive part of my life since an early age and really helps me through my dark days. I've been called cowardly and selfish but in your 'broken' mind it's the total opposite as well as your own personal pain you think you're a burden and a pain in the ass to everyone around you so you'd be better off gone. Lets keep on battling this cruel disease Mark🤘

I've recently suffered from mental health issues after years of work related stress and work bullying aimed at me. I spoke to councillors, my GP, my wife and my family and friends and they all thought I was being 'Weak'. I lost my career and now in addition to the Covid issue I have had 8 months out of work with no income and have had to take a £12,000 cut in salary just to get back into work, this had added to my mental health issues. For me there is no answer. If I speak out about it i'm classed as being 'Weak'. Thanks everyone. So much for this nice world full of people ready to 'Support' someone in need.

Hey man, I wanna give you props for making this video. A lot of peple deal with this and a lot of people are afraid to talk about it or afraid that their friends will think they are being a wuss or whatever. The fact that you made this reaches out to people. My friend and I talk about these issues a lot and a lot since quarantine. Your video definitely struck a nerve and made me cry a bit. Metal and punk rock have always been an outlet for me to channel my anger and emotions and offer a creative outlet for my frustrations with the world. Playing in hardcore bands for years really healped, now it's maintaining a KZbin channel. Cheers man! Stay Metal, Stay Punk!!!

Whenever I go long periods of time without listening to metal (we’re talking a few days here) I notice a huge difference in my mood. Metal helps me cope. It’s a security blanket. It’s cathartic (love the machine head song with that title). I didn’t always know why I gravitated towards it all those years ago, but now I understand it was because I was suffering and didn’t know why.
