You need to see Edward Woodward in the British TV programme Callan and you will see where the character came from. It is on You Tube and well worth finding ,however the first series is in black and white and I believe not all of the others have been down loaded. He was a Shakesperean actor and a very fine man and actor.

I remember after watch the show for a few years getting a bit disappointed that the show wasn't like the opening sequence (creepy ghetto subway - working class) but was nearer to Columbo - middle upper class, nice neighbourhoods and wealthy middle class people don't get threats of violence unlike in poor neighbourhoods
