So many small things adding up to something incredible in this scene. Two things that stood out to me outside of the badass fight choreography and overall drama was McCall timing himself (realizing he had slowed down just slightly with age) and at the end when he said "I'm sorry." He was apologizing to his dead spouse, who he had promised that he would leave this kind of work behind. Small things that inform about a character add up to a stellar performance.

What I love about this scene: The room becomes a chessboard, and we're shown all the pieces in play as McCall methodically notes each piece's position and available moves as he formulates his countermoves and end game - even as he is conflicted - while the tension is allowed to build. When he finally springs into action, there are no surprises -- just brilliant execution (pun intended).

@@wendyrosen3179 I agree with your last sentence, he seems a very admirable person. But I don't know if I agree with the idea that he's one of the best actors of the generation. I think people confuse his screen presence (which is powerful) with being a great actor. To me, he pretty much just plays Denzel Washington in every movie. That character is always strong, brave, capable etc, with a clear moral compass. I couldn't imagine him doing a comedy role for eg. Or a role like John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. The best actors to me are the ones who play a character so convincingly that you forget who the actor is. I can't imagine ever forgetting for one minute that it's Denzel on the screen.

The real telling point? Throughout the entire combat, his face didn't change. He didn't get angry, or cocky, or show any enjoyment. Those men were fighting for their lives showing a multitude of emotions, and he looked like he was changing a tire or plunging a toilet. Methodical, mechanical. He knew exactly what was going to happen before the fight even started. He was a PRO....and all they were was nothing more than a light workout.

Safe for one dumb premise, that the entire fight scene hinges on. And that would be him walking into the middle of the room, completely banking on the guy with the gun walking up towards him, like a dog with a stick .... instead of just remaining on his ass and shooting him in the back. Don't get me wrong, it is a cool scene. But as far as the methodical bit goes, it isn't. Unless we consider blatant plot armor a method.
@matasa7463 Жыл бұрын
The most terrifying part isn't just how routine it was for him... but the timer. He estimated 16 seconds was all it would take to neutralize all threats, and he ended up with 19 seconds of combat, and was like "eh, I got a bit rusty, too slow." How used to fighting do you have to be to be able to do be able to estimate that? Special forces and SWAT are the only ones who would do those kinds of intense room clearing training, but even they can't just estimate their split time like that on the fly based only on the observed situation...

I agree, but the purpose of the scene was to demonstrate his speed, efficiency, and razor edge skill. This is where we are introduced to the real McCall, and it's supposed to shock and awe, which it does in spades.

@Kevin Davis Yes I agree but it's just I feel atleast one guy, the casino owner should have felt his mistake for few more minutes before dying! The scene got over in no time.

i see this as two options: lets feel somebody sorry and let him live (and may be correct himself) or kill him as uncorrectible, than any time for sorry is wastes and give bastards chance fight back... i'n uncoutable movies and stories good guy made this mistake and in many of them lost because if that...

@@benb7111 I’m saying that Denzel stands tall for his beliefs. The BLM zealots stole the money from well-intentioned blacks as well as sellout whites, thinking it could virtue signal them into more street cred. What has BLM done for blacks? They burn down cities, trample the constitution, and attack cops. Black owned businesses were destroyed in these so-called ‘protests’ for justice. You think they give a damn about Floyd? They wanted blood and they found a legal excuse.
