As the Taliban took over Afghanistan, there was a desperate scramble to evacuate Western citizens and allies. Kabul airport saw scenes of chaos, as thousands of Afghans strove to flee the Taliban.

When Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, only a lucky few Afghans escaped. Osman, an Afghan interpreter, was evacuated thanks to a Visa from the Australian government - but it took years for the paperwork to be processed: 'we were telling them the Taliban were coming near the city, that we needed to leave this country as soon as possible but we were not hearing anything back'. Osman's former supervisor was not able to escape - he lives in constant fear of Taliban reprisal. 'The threat of the Taliban is everywhere', he says. Despite assisting the Australian government, he has not heard back about his visa: 'I think I have sent them 32 emails, but no answer from them'.

@Black Royal Society of Philomathic Studies I can't do live stream but I was walking in a neighborhood in Kabul yesterday afternoon which I'll post a cut video of. Even my Afghan colleagues are telling me that they are polite at road checkpoints and they've been polite to me. It's strange as one of the few foreigners walking around - it seems so normal - unlike the previous government.

The interpreters are very lucky that the U.S. government allowed them to board their planes which is strange since many Afghan interpreters who worked for the U.S. government haven't yet been evacuated or got their visa applications approved. It is Australian government's job to handle the asylum cases of their interpreters not another country.

Why do they all have rugs on their car dashboards, anyone?
@alexcarter8807
@alexcarter8807 2 жыл бұрын
In very hot places, dashboard covers keep the dashboard from overheating and warping, and they help the plastic stay in much nicer condition anyway. There are parts of the US like the Southwest where they make a ton of sense, also either steering wheel covers or driving gloves because the steering wheel gets almost too hot to hold otherwise.

This Jordyn woman needs to back off giving these people a false sense of hope, if she had put me on that bus then later tell me there's nothing we can do, it would not have been a good day for her. Better off let these people stay and rebuild their lives. Coalition forces went into Afghanistan to help the people but obviously they didn't want the help or else this would have been a different outcome. Lesson learned from this...Don't betray your country/people. If you want a better life fight for it , don't EXPECT it.

I know Australia does not have the military might of the US and the UK. As a vet of that fucking pointless war, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United States, and the United Kingdom could have done a little more of an effort to evacuate Afghan civilians to the West. Easier said than done, however. Packing people into our fright planes was a fucking nightmare. As we flew to Germany, as I was standing guard, it as hard to see all those blank faces of what awaits them next. The flight to Dulles, at least for me, I was just happy to go home. If at least for a while.
