13:36 I made a bit of a faux pax (which I think is called a manaaihan in Japan) ... the moquette (flipdown) side of the footrest is for resting your feet on - socks only, no shoes allowed. Thank you to some of my Japanese viewers for pointing this out. 🙏

My heart skipped a beat when I saw your video! Thanks for the memories. I left my ticket at the first gantry and got a bit confused when I got to the 2nd gantry. Thankfully one of the gantries was left opened so I just walked out. You would've seen that at the end of my video. I bought my ticket directly from the office at Shin Osaka Station the day before, which was convenient. Oh yeah, I took the Nozomi Express. Gosh I miss Japan!

Ha! That was lucky! Yes, I can’t wait to go back! The Nozomi is definitely the way to do it if you don’t have to worry about a JR Pass.

The person who died in the accident at Mishima Station was not technically a passenger. It was a young man who tried to forcefully pry open a nearly closed door, got his fingers caught, was dragged, and fell onto the tracks. To date, there hasn’t been a single passenger fatality caused by derailments or collisions during train operations. This is incredible, especially considering that several major earthquakes have occurred since the line first opened.
@FromtheWindowSeatАй бұрын
Oh right … the sources I found didn’t make that clear. Thanks for explaining!
I travelled on the Shinkansen in the 70s, between Tokyo and Kyoto. It was a great experience. We enjoyed trolly service with the bento boxes. Luckily we saw Mount Fuji too. Japan is so different, clean and well organised. Luckily we had a Japanese friend with us at the time so that was a plus when travelling.

that’s so interesting that they refer to trains as departing from Track [Number] rather than Platform [Number]! Now that I think about it, it actually makes more sense in a way, to refer to the train as departing from the track it’s on, rather than the platform us passengers meet it at! thanks for another excellent video Adam. always a joy.

In the 1970s, the Joetsu Shinkansen had a dining car, and I have fond memories of eating curry rice there with my parents.On a different note, I went to Tokyo yesterday and took the Shinkansen back home. It was only a one-stop trip, so the ride took only 12 minutes. However, it would take 36 minutes on the local train.

Although the timetable on the station platform is displayed in minutes, the diagrams held by the train crew are actually managed in 15-second increments. This could cause you to think your train departed or arrived 15 to 45 seconds late. By the way, the annual average delay time for Shinkansen trains is less than 20 seconds.

In Green Cars, you need to be polite when resting your feet on the footrest. The footrest has a front and back, and you need to take off your shoes on the moquette side. If you want to keep your shoes on, use the opposite side, which has no moquette. This is an absolute rule. Because, you know, if you unknowingly put your shoes on the moquette side and make it dirty, and someone else takes off their shoes and rests their feet on the moquette, then that person, along with their socks, will also become dirty. It's an obvious rule.

Love the video, Adam!! I am so keen to go to Japan- particularly the wood craft/ art region in Hakone- as I am a collector & lover of Japanese karakuri style puzzle boxes. (I think you were in this region in a previous video). I am perplexed by the external facade of that origin train station … that definitely does not look like Japanese architecture!!?? Considering it was constructed in early 1900s, I am curious about the designer & their influences! It definitely looks European.

If you have a JR Pass for the Green Car you can go on almost any JR train but the unreserved cars are ordinary cars (standard class). To use the green car, you’ll need a seat reservation but you can do this for free using a ticket machine at the station … it only takes a few minutes, so I was literally able to look at which Shinkansen is departing soon and make a seat reset there and then.
