This story is almost autobiographical. EMForster was in the closet most of his life. Unlike Miss Raby, he recognised it when he fell in love w men & a working class man; a cop, became the love of his life. (The cop was married. They worked it out. Forster lived a long life, living after the death of the cop, & Forster died in the cop's wife's arms.) Miss Raby's confusions about being rich also assailed Forster. He recognized the advantages he had had from being upper class & having sufficient wealth to not have to work. Miss Araby is even a writer, and makes money she doesn't need for survival, thru her writing.
