It's unfortunate that desperate people will often look for a "Moses" and end up following someone who is anyone but. It's hard to know if Abba Mahari actually believed he had the power, or just ran into the one thing he couldn't finesse in the form of a river, but the result is still the same. Unfortunately for the Falasha, by the time some made it to Israel, they found it wasn't the earthly paradise they had hoped for. Some of the more right wing in Israel were unwelcoming, to put it mildly. The problem, as always, is not because of people being fundamentally bad or even fundamentally good but being fundamentally people. As Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman wrote about the human race in the the novel "Good Omens" And just when you'd think they were more malignant than ever Hell could be, they could occasionally show more grace than Heaven ever dreamed of. Often the same individual was involved. It was this free-will thing, of course. It was a bugger."

I'm a little confused: Christianity has been a big thing in Ethiopia since the first century, said to be brought by Jesus' disciple Phillip. While the Europeans did bring their form of religion to Africa in the 19th Century, Ethiopian christianity was already entrenched. p.s. I do know a Sudanese Canadian who left Sudan after being somewhat unknowingly involved in the Fulasha airlift of the early '80s. The stories he has!

But ethiopia's form of christianity was coptic, while the missionaries were protestants. actually, there were tries to convert the Christian coptic ethiopians to Catholic Christianity by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries, but it ended in a failures and rebellions.

While there is no historical evidence that the original Hebrews ever came from being slaves in Egypt, many Jews did later move there for one reason or another. From there, it seems likely that some just moved on to nearby Ethiopia, married with local people, and formed the original Falasha community. It is sad that later on, they could not figure out how to make that same trip in reverse. In any case, they mythologized themselves by coming to believe that they were the descendants of a sexual union between King Soloman and the Queen of Sheeba (Ethiopia) when they were much more probably the descendants of Egyptian Jews who moved on for the usual reasons, persecution and or trade.

@@RareEarthSeries Catholicism developed over a millennia throughout the whole Mediterranean, including the Levant and North Africa. Also to say "Protestantism came from Europe" therefor Protestantism is a Christian religion is silly, because it's still an Abrahamic religion from the Levant. At that rate any sects founded in America (e.g. Pentecostalism) follow an "American God," which is theological nonsense. Protestantism still has its origins Catholicism, and Catholicism in the Proto-Orthodoxy, and the Proto-Orthodoxy in the Levant. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam (in all their forms) are all Semitic religions, like it or not.

You are intentionally misunderstanding what was said to question if it might mean something it didn't. The form of God introduced to the Ethiopians by Europeans would have been unrecognizable to people from the middle east at that time. They would have not considered it theirs, as would be the case with the local Coptics. Hence, a European God.
@n-wordaficianado29905 жыл бұрын
@@RareEarthSeries No, it wouldn't be completely unrecognizable to the Middle-East. First of all, Ethiopia isn't the Middle-East, second of all there are still a multitude of Christian sects in the Middle-East that are traditionally similar to Catholicism, with it even being the case that in several areas of the Middle-East Catholics were still common or even the majority (e.g. Maronites in Lebanon). However, I do see your point about the fact that the Christianity of Europe would seem alien to the Jewish Ethiopian Highlanders, but I think framing it as a "European God" is biased in intent to leave some strange taste in the mouth that's meant to be somewhere between disgust and anger specifically at the West for infringing upon local values (as though it's particularly egregious compared to the countless forms of imperialism through out history), even though that's easily more of a Abrahamic ideal than a simply "European" one. Also, though I might disagree with the semantics of your video here, I'm still a big fan of your content, and thanks for responding.

I love this channel because you may have your bias as we all have, but you always show two sides of the coin. If I was to stumble across this story by myself I’d find it simply something that makes fun of the church in a way, but then you go on to say how people put their faith in lunatics because they want to be who they are and they have nowhere else to turn. It really puts things into perspective when you sit down and think. Thank you.

They are an interesting bunch... The term apparently comes from the fact that they abandoned the jewish faith, and then converted back. It's pretty much derision from the jews who didn't abandon their faith, yet they go by it, almost as a penance. A fun fact is that they are one of the earliest groups of displaced jews, and I don't even know why they left israel, it was certainly before roman times.

European God? Ethiopia has been Christian since 340AD and every Ethiopian/Eretrian I've met are excellent swimmers.

Your anecdotes aren't statistics, however, and the Christian God of Ethiopia is not the Christian God of Europe. That's why Europeans also tried to convert the Coptics.

How could 'moses' take them to Israel? The Bible says God cursed him to never enter Israel for striking the rock for water instead of speaking to it. Not the the Bible is real but those people believed a character came back to life without even knowing his story. Down right foolish.

Who is European God? Zeus and Odin? Did you mistaken Christian missionaries worship Zeus and Odin?..... Jesus was Jewish FYI And why should they swim? They can walk through Sudan, Egypt, crossing Sinai and reach Israel. Yes it's very far, but possible

As to why there were Christian missionaries in Ethiopia, which had been Christian about as long as the Roman Empire had, they seem to have been members of the London Society for Promoting Christianity Amongst the Jews. So they would have been trying to convert the Beta Israel in particular, not the whole of Ethiopia.

'Abba Mahari', by the way, doesn't seem to be a birth name. 'Abba' is defined by Wikipedia as meaning "Father; religious superior; in the Syriac, Coptic, and Ethiopic churches, a title given to the bishops, and by the bishops to the patriarch; a title given to Jewish scholars in the Talmudic period." 'Mahari' seems to be a Hebrew acronym for 'Our teacher, the Rabbi', and so several prominent rabbis are referred to with this title, for example Israel Bruna as 'Mahari Bruna'.

Ethiopia is widely accepted to have been one of the first Christian countries even before the Roman Empire. It’s disputed between Armenia and Ethiopia. You’re very condescendingly saying “European God” and even said “newfangled European God” as if Christianity was introduced by European colonizers during the Scramble for Africa. Africa was a stronghold for Christianity long before colonization, such as Egypt before Islamic conquests. I hope you said that due to misinformation rather than being actually derogatory and malicious.

European missionaries usually come around with pictures of White Jesus and to a group of Ethiopian Jews would be a new European God.
@RareEarthSeries5 жыл бұрын
The European missionaries tried to convert them because they didn't feel their Christianity was European enough. The God of Ethiopia and the God of Europe may have both started in the same location, but neither party would have considered them the same.
