Great video as always, Evan and crew! Just one thing. The Catholic Church was pretty opposed to the Malleus Maleficarum from the get go. The author forged a lot of documentation, so it may get confused in earlier sources, but most historians agree that it was widely panned by the Church's establishment due to its opposition to witch hunting, as well as due to its methods being found ineffective and immoral. However, it was pretty accepted by secular rulers, probably, as you said, for political and personal purposes. In a place as isolated as Vaduz, it's pretty easy to see how ruthless rulers could exploit its lies for their own benefit.

You would think that he could have cut out the middle men and just accused his debtors of being witches. It worked for King Philip IV
@Sewblon
@Sewblon 5 жыл бұрын
Philip the IV could only get away with that because he had the Pope under his control, and had the Florentine bankers to replace the Templars as his main source of financing. If a normal count had tried that, then he would have been left without any source of credit afterwards, and that is the best case scenario. The worst case scenario is that your creditors have someone higher up the food chain, like the emperor or the pope, save them, then have you killed.

As a young kid, I have had a fascination with Lichtenstein, not just because of its landscape or its historic civilizations, but the fact that I was on a computer quest on searching for the world's tiniest country. Lichtenstein was one of the first micronations I had the curiosity of finding and exploring on the map. Yet I literally had no idea of the history behind this micronation until I watched this video today. Now I know Liechtenstein was created out of a medieval purge led by a witch-hunting campaign that scarred thousands of people.

I do small town media, so while I enjoy your history and storytelling, I ESPECIALLY enjoy your production quality. The video quality and shot composition and motion is stunning. Terrific drone work...but what I really meant to compliment when I starting typing this was your sound. I had to rewatch parts of this video to stay attached to the story because I'd get hung up on whether or not you were dubbing. The crickets comment at the end finally cleared that up! He seems a little TOO emotionally invested in the history of hundreds of years ago. It comes off as being kinda ridiculous...over-acting. Just tell the damn story without acting like it affects you personally, silly man.

Every time people tell me DC is too small to be a state, I point out we're bigger than Liechtenstein. I've only been once to Liechtenstein, but it's definitely separate from what surrounds it.

I come from an old New England family. They were Puritans and landed at Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635 and lived in Essex County in and around Gloucester, Marblehead, Salem, and Danvers (known as Salem Village back then). Some still do. They lived through the Witch Trials there. One of my ancestors was called for jury duty for the trials. Not believing in witches or in punishing people for witchcraft, he skipped town and went down to Plymouth Colony and is now known by his nickname "Witchcraft Mark".

Do Switzerland next. Some interesting stories might be: - Sulzig Joggi (Jakob Schmidlin), who was sentenced to death in the 18 century because he owned and read a german Bible. His death caused a public uproar and was partially responsible for the seperation of church and state in Lucerne and weakened the influence of the Jesuits in central Switzerland.

It would be interesting to check the sources for this video, specially regarding the amount of executions. Losing a tenth of a population has demographic, economic, even artistic consequences that can't be hidden, like the plague left deep scars on European society. In a similar case, some authors have taken one sample if the executions under the Spanish Inquisition, projected them statistically (as if the Inquisition were a factory of executions with a growing quota to fill and not a court of law) and came up with numbers of massive genocide, while a long, hard look at the historical files brings way lesser ciphers. And plenty of acquittals, or people condemned to other punishments than death. Also, at least giving the names of the characters in the description would make the research easier for those ones who want to factcheck. de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_Karl_von_Hohenems

We used to live near Bern and went on a weekend trip to St Gallen, then a side day trip to Vaduz. Unfortunately, as it was a Sunday, the only thing actually open was (strangely) the post office museum. My son was maybe around 4 at the time, and very... nosy. Despite the lady telling him "don't put your hand in the stamp drawers", he put his hands in the stamp drawer, and got stuck. (yes, he got into trouble, but from us, not the lady. She just laughed and said it happens every time, and rescued him.)

I am and live in America. This was interesting because the company that I work for started in Liechtenstein and is now global. It’s called Balzer’s after the town there. Although the company has changed it’s name now to Oerikon. Some of my coworkers got to go to Liechtenstein to learn the latest technology that our company had many years ago. I always wished I had gotten picked to go.

The malleus malifecarum was a book written near the end of the burning times and it was only popular for how entertaining it was. During the burning times (most witches were hung and not burned) About half of the accused were men and about half of the accusers were women. So it really wasn't sexist at all.

Fun fact: The Curta mechanical calculator was manufactured in Liechtenstein until the early 1970's, when electronic hand-held calculators started to rise in popularity. There has never been a hand-held calculator like the Curta, and there most likely will never be again.
