I remember watching that performance LIVE in 1984. Let me tell you, middle America in that year could NOT handle it. I thought it was truly brilliant. Thanks for posting it. I lost the VHS of it along the way.

Why the fudge do evangelicals think gender-bending radiates scary waves that turn all their kids into gay and frilly commies? Okay, the Bible says it's a sin, but so is adultery and p$ssy grabbing, yet they ignore that. Who sets their flip-out rankings for them?
@sandrafaith4 ай бұрын
Same! (Damn, just noticed this comment is 15 years old, just slightly older than I was when I first saw this performance, lol)
@dattamusic34983 ай бұрын
The music is great..superb... If they couldn't handle that, I agree... But seeing drag and "bending genders" is not anything that should be handled... Should be ignored and forgot.... But I see, to some people, y'all act like it's unique and Earth shifting if a man is dressing and acting like a woman and visa versa.... Shit ain't new and fresh and crossing lines.... It's just lame and conscrewed at this point

Between Annie and Boy George people lost their shit with the androgynous looks. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando had the right idea.

I miss being able to watch the Grammys. Being able to watch really great performances. It's not just flashy or controversial. I remember watching this as a kid, and I was absolutely amazed. Their performance was imprcable! Oh, well. I guess it is for the better that the award shows are now only available on streaming. These days, they are not as great as before. I totally agree with you. Back then, the Grammys, etc, were still worth watching.

My parents were watching the Grammys that night and the Eurythmics were completely unknown here then. Mom said 'he' was very good-looking and taped the song! lol The next morning the Today show was showing Grammy highlights and Dad took infinite delight in learning that Mom's inamorata was named 'Annie'!! LOL So for years whenever Lennox was on tv he would call,"Hey Bo, your boyfriend is on." And Mom would say wistfully,"She should've been born a boy." This ^ ^ ^ is fantastic.

Such a cool story. My parents were freaking out about all the “gender benders” in the 80s. I loved them and dressed as Boy George for my first Halloween party in College. Let’s just say I got a lot of attention. The next day my Dad came to visit me at school and freaked out when my dorm-mate came in and still had his nail polish on from the night before. That boy is now a neurologist and I am still gender bending in my own ways now.

Omg i remember that day too and i instsntly fell in love with this "handsome young man" lol! I was too young so i didnt know eurythmics singer was a female so it struck me real hard when i found out my latest crush was a she lol
I ABSOLUTELY REMEMBER seeing this live (on TV)! I was watching the Grammys with my Mom (still with us, thankfully) and right at the beginning I think, The Eurythmics were introduced, and I said to my Mom, "The lead singer, Annie Lennox is quite striking - short spiky red hair, but very pretty and a GREAT singer. I wonder if she'll wear a wig?" Suddenly, I see what looks like Elvis in Johnny Cash's clothes, and I said "Omigod! She looks like Elvis!" And my Mom said, "That's a WOMAN?" (Yup. Quite)

I was 11 years old when this aired and I remember just thinking "Huh? What the...?" I think the Grammys are still in shock. In hindsight, there is absolutely no one who can do gender-bending and androgyny quite as well and with style and panache as Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, Tilda Swinton and David Bowie. This is true art.

Love it! Annie and Dave had created sounds and instruments unlike anything I've ever seen or heard! I always loved watch Dave play these instruments as Annie's power voice and beautiful, hypnotic eye's and a unique look that they both shared with the world! They didn't care what others thought! They fought and sacrificed so much to create and express their art to the very top of the charts! Truly amazing and talented, strong artist that inspired me in my own art. I'd be drawing, sketching all the time while listening to their albums I had to have! The very albums that I refused to sale or rid myself of! So many precious memories. I miss the 80's 90's! I miss the music, how musicians expressed themselves freely. So many different choices! I'm still waiting the the next garage band to punch a hole in today's music!

So true , I remember watching it live when I was in my early 20s. The audience was confused, and so was John Denver. She sang in a lower register as well to complete the look. Later that night Boy George was beamed in via satellite from England to make an acceptance speech. He said " and thank you America for knowing a great drag queen when you see one ! " The Oak Ridge Boys were so upset that they walked out . 😆
