The Evangelion Movies We NEVER Got

The Evangelion Rebuilds by Studio Khara are great, but they weren't always supposed to be the way they ended up. Actually, 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 were going to be completely different movies, and the preview trailers we got for them show Hideaki Anno's original vision for these movies. In this video I analyze what could've been in the Evangelion movies we never got.

Anno has said that he is interested in telling more of the 14 year timeskip (without his full involvement probably.) So we might get a 2.5 + 3.0 movie. There was that short film a year ago so we might get something soon.

So an interview that I read implies that the structure of the film that was 3.0. Gendo and Fuyutski are ousted from control of NERV by SEELE, they then quest to Calvary base (antarctica) so Gendo can use the Key of Nebuchadnezzar to become "King of the Lillim" or a God surpassing even Kaworu Nagisa. In his absence Kaworu and Kaji have become the heads of NERV and hatch a plan to rebuild the world damaged by the Second Impact and Near-Third-Impact. There are few details beyond this point. Anno decided he didn't like the idea of a movie about Shinji that Shinji is not actually in, so he jumped to 3.0. Also, I think if we can accept that the original plan for Evangelion Mark 6 was given to Evangelion Unit 13, a lot of issues in how 2.0 was supposed to translate into 3.0 are resolved much more easily. Essentially Unit 13's role in the story was the original one intended for Mark 6-but Anno didn't like Mark 6 that much since its motifs as the alternative to Unit 01 weren't strong enough. (Close inspection shows its design to be greatly influenced by Unit 01 but not more clearly so than Unit 13.) My own conjecture is that Gendo probably figured out a way to make SEELE subordinate to him and returns to NERV-Tokyo 3 unstoppable to all opposed after becoming supernatural ie: the "King of the Lillim". He dispatches the last Angel without the help of an Evangelion but his total disregard for the world and moral unscrupulousness finally alienates the WILLE faction out of NERV who sabotage his efforts to finish Near Third Impact. Wunder is hijacked by WILLE before it can be used, and Mark 6 is sent to neutralize Lilith for good and seal away the spears in Terminal Dogma, leaving Gendo unable to reach the tools to finish Near Third Impact. In return-Gendo sends Evangelion Unit 01 into space to prevent WILLE from waking Shinji and using him and Unit 01 to restore the world. As for 3.0 + 1.0, I really don't think the original plan for that movie in 2012 was much further than "WILLE mounts a final attack on NERV with the restored Evas 02 and 08". That's pretty much what we got in Final, so other than some minor details in how the last battle was supposed to look as it played out-what you see is what we got.

Minor detail, at 1.19 you mention that Rei is dead but 3.0 and 3.0 + 1.0 (lol) confirm that she is alive, "simply" trapped (probably voluntarily) inside EVA 01, that's why Rei have long hair. It's a minor detail because sadly she do nothing... which is very frustrating.

The fun thing is that there had been long-time rumors the complete or at least a good part of the original 3.0 movie was lost during the 2011 earthquake. Despite the official reports that say isn't true, people still speculate that actually happened.

I think there will be a movie in the next few years. Maybe with Anno, maybe without him directing. Evangelions is way too big of a franchise to not do anything with it. I mean the recent IMAX release in the US shows that they are willing to continue milking Evangelion. Also: The moments before Kajis death are shown in 3.0+1.0 during misatos flashback before the Wunder launches Operation Yashima. We can see Kaji saying goodbye and giving his armband to Misato. Behind Misato we can also see the AAA Wunder in the background in the geofront.

I'd rather Anno move on from eva honestly :(( but its pretty understandable considering how he poured all his emotions into it and made NGE to express himself basically (anno said it himself that he put all of his life (doubts and struggles and other stuff he loved) into NGE). And considering how Gaina[x] fucked Khara's plan for the future by taking away their franchises it's pretty understandable if Khara wants to turn into a fully Eva studio. (What Gaina[x] took from Khara (aggreements were made and its rightfully Khara's considering the staffs) FLCL (Kazuya), Gunbuster (Anno), Diebuster (Kazuya, Anno)) (you can read about it more on Anno's writeup on his relationship with gainax).

I just hope there will be an Eva 2.5 movie at some point. That Anno is willing to show more has been proven by the 10 minute short that was produced for 3.333 as a prequel to the movie, called "Evangelion: 3.0 (-46h)". I can only recommend to anyone watching it, it is quite fantastic!

I really hope that they'll eventually release this version of 3.0. Maybe as an "in between" movie, named 2.5, or something like that. Seeing Unit-6 gliding down the dogma is really cool, I wonder what Kaworu was up to. Also maybe the desert scene with Ikari and Fuyutski has something to do with the dead sea scrolls? Or just some search for artefacts.... So many unanswered questions!

I'm sure you have been told or figured it out, but the thing that you really don't know what it is, is the Quarantine Asuka was kept inside after her merger with Unit 03… not sure how but she likely Willed her contaminated form out of her Eva’s Core (or what remained of if) after Unit 01’s dummy system ripped 03 apart… Similar to how Shinji rematerialised in the NGE series.

There’s an entire movie between 2.0 and 3.0 that is missing. And that desperately needed context is what it would have taken for the emotional impacts of 3.0 and the 4th movie to actually work. Just imagine it, an entire movie without having to deal with Shinji.

As a Shinji and Rei cosplayer I had initially high hopes for the Rebuild movies when I did Shinji 2.0 Plugsuit but then in the later half it went completely downhill and eventually I did Rei 4.0 (black) Plugsuit but somehow I felt the second half was a bungling mess in terms of plot.

I definitely agree with the assessment that 3.0 was a great movie as we got it-but i'm still very curious about what *this* 3.0 was going to be like. I guess it wouldve been more like a 2.5 Evangelion-and we'll never know since it was ultimately intended to be a mid-quel and would be incapable of ending Rebuild as we saw it. But there was such a leap between 2.0 and 3.0 that when fans were shocked at how much had changed I shared a bit of their shock at first. I later came to see 3.0 as a great movie-but I didn't at first because of how much it had changed, a 2.5 would've been good and could-in theory still be relevant.

I think 3.0 is incredible it definitely was a little bit disjointed because of all the stuff that you have to kind of fill in yourself but now that everything has been completed it is pretty amazing in my estimation even the fact that Shinji is basically an angel which just makes the whole thing kind of wild

One can easily see the 3.0 preview happening in the time gap, for sure. I love 3.33 BTW. As for the 4.0 preview, looks better than what we got. Yep, I was not a big fan of the finale to say the least. The closest we'll get to that is the Khara short film *Until You Come To Me* that was written by Anno himself. Which gives you a further glimpse of what the finale could have been.

@@nickmakesfilmsYT I wouldn't say it's Near Third Impact. Kaworu stopped that remember? Somehow SOMETHING restarted Third Impact resulting in the Failures of Infinity Midori was running from in -46. There's also the matter of Unit 01 going to space, the creation of WILLE and Kaji's heroic sacrifice. There's a HUGE story regarding the Timeskip that we don't have the full picture of yet. Hopefully Khara will tell us eventually.

Meh, idk i think 3.0 is amazing personally but the rest is pretty meh, first half of 3+1 is great but the second half could be better if they made the sketchy anno instrumentality a live action (i guess that's the plan? but covid? since they need crowds and all). 2.0 is improvement, and 1.0 is okay ish. But what i love about the rebuilds is that its beat by beat the same story as the original.

I think a lot of the push back that you see on the internet is wrong for a start, but also it's because people often assume that rebuild is a remake of a the original, and they don't like the idea that the original was replaced, but that's just not how it is as we all know, or anybody that has any sense knows.
