A while back, the fan motor bearing in my condensing unit was going out. A Hvac guy came by and swapped the fan motor out, it was in the fall so it was already 50 60 outside so we didn't use the ac much. Now it being summer, i noticed the ac was not blowing as cool as it should have been. Went outside to take a look and the fan was spinning the wrong way! Im used to feeling hot air blow up, but it was blowing out of the condenser coils and against my legs. Two wires in my case made the rotation turn the way its supposed to, now it's cold ac!

Chris, I know you don't always show everything, but on set screws, I always set them 3 times by tightening them down and losing them up and going a bit tighter each time, so they make a divet in the flats on the shaft or keyway, this was an oldtimer thing that was taught to me back in the 80s, it has saved my ass more than a few times. lol PS you do a good job and your customers not only reflect that but appreciate that. :)

Something I noticed, and it normally wouldn't be a problem, but when you checked the yellow wire, you touched to ground at the screw below your elbow. When you checked the other two, you checked to ground at the screw at your shoulder. Then you went back to check yellow - and went back to the one at your elbow. You _could_ have been using a good ground for the brown/black, but bad ground for the yellow.

I find it weird that in the USA they will run cable in steel conduit. But then in some case they run single insulated cable instead of double insulated cable🥴
@throttlebottle5906

much of that exposed single conductor "single insulated cabling" is actually double or triple composition insulated. vibration and chaffing wear will eat through it all, regardless of being in any type of conduit or sleeve. proper routing and protection is number is the only solution.

one way to trace if you have a bad wire... they might be close enough to test for resistance along the wire... I would have done that as soon as the motor started sounding off and had access to the back. high resistance (especially if 1 in 3) but still a connection would be where the wire is partly broken If too far... while knowing they are dead, wire 2 wires together and test at the other end... typically wires don't have much of a resistance, unless a very long run...

Hi, great video, I used to do a lot with four belt pullies with taper locks, I found it invaluable to take a steel rule with me, put the rule across the face of the pulley and you can get great alignment down the belt.
@standardstyle5976

It amazes me that rubber V belts manage to wear away steel pulleys like that. I imagine what's actually causing the wear is dust and particulate that gets trapped between the belt and pulley but still.

That is correct. Industrially, when grinding really hard materials, it is common to use a copper or iron wheel, with diamond embedded in it. The hard material grinds away because the softer material holds the abrasive.

friction is friction, everything eats everything. but you also have to take into account the total contact area(surfaces). a belt clearly has more total contact surface to even the wear, whereas the sheaves have far less and only a small portion is always used. the belts still wear out faster than the sheaves due to material composition, but everything wears!

Another great video, Chris, though this time I think you've excelled yourself! I thought the extra details on reading the schematic and explaining how the 3-phase was implemented were really good. The only thing I can think of would be more information about the model you're working on so that I can dig around online after watching one of your videos with a view to downloading information and learning more. I find genuinely find your videos inspiring. Regarding pulley alignment, a straight-edge such as an engineering steel rule and a flashlight to check for gaps will enable you to do so precisely without the expense of laser alignment equipment. Also, have you considered using a laser pointer to pinpoint or highlight specific things in your video. If you are also using these videos as work records this may be beneficial in terms of accuracy and time saving. It would also have the advantage of being able to show or send a frame of the video to someone and they would see instantly what or where you were referring to.

having learned to build electrical cabinets for industrial applications for a short time in a past that doesn´t seem to have existed any more, I seriously cringe seeing that wiring and seeing a two pole contactor beeing used for three phase. there are things you simply should not skimp on. taking five minutes to route cables properly is one of them. ok, the cabinets I worked with had not been so cramped and making whatever was needed in some space available, but I am a huge fan of using those wire guides we had ever since and ad least making an effort to not just bunch up spare cables somewhere in the middle with a zip tie.

Original comment from 1 hour ago, and a reply to that comment is from 2 hours ago... 👏 Good job, KZbin! Best practice is to start with the feed. You don't want to waste time checking everything "south" of the disconnect only to discover the problem is between the breaker panel and the disconnect. As DemonKnight mentioned, there can be capacitive coupling to an otherwise "dead" line. Chris has had videos in the past where units have lost a phase due to building wiring, and videos where the incoming service to the building dropped a phase.

Jesus, some of those American HVAC units are just such friggin garbage. It's like, how can we assemble this as cheaply as possible? Two pole contactors for three phase, no cable tray, no wire loom, no wire protection at all. Just looks like a kindergartner assembled it. But, that's what you get when MBAs are making the calls to maximize profits, junk! But, works out for service techs. Nothing but easily preventable problems that cause truck rolls to fix.

Should you check oil levels?

Is there some kind of alignment jig you can buy or make for the blower motor replacement? If there is such a device, it might be a time not to mention money saver. Just asking.

Why don't you use a straight edge for proper ALIGNMENT

The one thing that seemed odd was that when you measured the voltage at the motor that the "good" legs measured 120V, but they were 208V lines. It was probably best that you replaced all three legs. I'm not sure if the 120V triggered a 120V good brain cell, but it should have read 208V. Maybe i missed something.

John I was testing to ground at that point so. Each leg on a 208 volt service to ground will read 120v

208Y/120V that's the normal result due to phase shift and Wye wiring. 208Volts phase to phase and 120V from any of the three phases to neutral(or ground when properly bonded). Delta wiring or higher voltages are a different scenario.
