Disney rides shouldn't look like theme park rides. They should look like experiences that don't feel like an average theme park ride. The tower of terror, while sure it's a drop tower ride, is accompanied by excellent theming and story to make it feel like something more.

Excellent presentation ! As a visitor from Japan, the original California adventure seemed exotic, fun and very American. Even educational on culture of California. When it changed/added Victorian motif, it was even better. The Victorian theme (treated as nostalgic good-old days, I imagine) gave an unique and special atmosphere to me. When I saw the Toy Story attraction opened in Tokyo Disney Sea, it reminded me the California adventure. Overall, it’s sort of similar change that Disney Sea also started as predominantly non-Disney themed park but recent development pronouncing Disney films/characters more.

I went to DCA when it was first opened and I couldn’t agree more about the tackiness and the lack of Disney feel, so when it was re-done to be more cohesive throughout the whole park using a classic 1920s style, including the entryway, Grizzly Peak area, Paradise Pier, Sunset Blvd with the Tower of Terror and the redone airfield, all of those things really worked well together, despite having a Bugs Land, Cars Land, Monsters Inc, and The Wharf that didn’t go, it didn’t matter as much because those areas were well themed in themselves. Overall, the park was so vastly improved that when the announcement was made for Marvel land and Pixar Pier, I was definitely concerned. I’m going to see Pixar Pier for the first time in about a month and while I wasn’t on board with it initially, it sounds like it could be an interesting place. My main worry though is that the park as a whole is losing something in their overall theming and cohesiveness.

The Wharf is San Francisco inspired, it did fit. And it wasn't just 20s. The architecture of BVS changes from 20s, supposedly when Walt got there, including the billboard and the trolly that travels through those years., through to the 30s, and Carthay Circle where Snow White premiered. The stores all have nods to Walt's time in California and his family. Hollywood was a nod to the Hollywood and backlots of Walt's time, that Snow White really opened up for Walt. Monsters Inc may seem out of place but it's worth it to not have that awful limo ride anymore. Paradise Pier was based on the boardwalks that Lilian loved, and Walt always wanted to find a way to incorporate, especially the wooden coaster. Losing that theming for the pier was actually heartbreaking for me. I agree with Bugs land and Cars Land, they work so well with their immersive theming. Bugs land being the little kid area the theme worked really well and didn't have to be too exciting. Carsland being route 66 themed fits the California theme, and some of the best work Disney has done when it comes to land immersion, it truly feels like you just walked into the movie.

After visiting the park again with the new Pixar overlay, I will say that it’s somewhere between 1.0 and 2.0. The characters add a Disney element that was lacking in the original, but it also brings back a tackiness that removes the Victorian feel and takes away from the connection it had to the other parts of the park. Personally, I don’t think they should’ve changed it but, if they’re going to lean into the Pixar theming, they should go all out and convert Paradise Gardens too! I think that they need to remove Goofy’s Sky School, the Zephyr, and Jumping Jellyfish (plus some other stuff that might be in the way) to create a massive show building for a Monsters Inc dark ride using some elements from the current ride, but adding in a thrill part where you ride a door along the conveyor belt. It can be a hanging coaster style ride that incorporates show scenes with animatronics. They can then get rid of the current Monsters Inc ride and use that as further Marvel expansion area. They also can redo The Little Mermaid to be Nemo themed and the swings can be changed to be an Up theme, like we’re floating on balloons, or a Coco themed ride and play the music from the film. I don’t particularly like Pixar Pier, but my feeling is, if you’re going to use a theme, then use it completely!

I remember going to a showcase indoor tent before California Adventure opened six months later. They played the song "California Dreaming" on a loop. The layout of the land seemed too small to blend the theme sections together in a no jarring way. I liked the idea for a general state theme since California has so many different zones (desert, forest, chaparral, and seaside...) and a crazy history but what was on display seemed underwhelming. I went up an observation tower overlooking the construction and talked to one of the staff. They seemed suspiciously optimistic about it all. I shared some of my ideas for some Ca. Themed rides like the Earthquake, escape the Sierra Madre Forest Fire (darkroom ride), explore the Monterrey Trench(submarine ride), and a Mojave runaway train ride....The staff member was not amused and looked like they wanted to call security on me....It would be nice to see a park like that go towards the immaculate theming of DisneySea in Tokyo rather than a Universal Studios imitation focused on Pixar and product.

You know, I think DCA needs a whole new renovation. For my idea for the renovation, I was thinking of combining the strong points of DCA 1.0 and DCA 2.0 to make a better theme park. Here's what I thought up for at least Paradise Pier. Maliboomer- Bring it back and retheme it as the Laugh O Gram high-striker to make it fit in with the 1920's theme of DCA 2.0. California Screamin'- Redesign the trains of the ride and create a rag-time cover of the music. Silly Symphony Swings, Golden Zephyr, Goofy's Fly School- Keep it the same. Mickey's fun wheel- Retheme it back into the sun wheel but make the sun into the Pie-eyed style. Jumpin' Jellyfish- I would just say get rid of that ride. I never really knew anybody who rode that. The Little Mermaid- Ariel's Undersea Adventure- Move that to the main park (Disneyland) and have it find a home in fantasyland. After that replace that space with a space for a band that plays live music that can be heard in the speakers.

You've definitely thought long and hard about this! Some great ideas in there, it's sad though that I think DCA has officially chosen its new path to go down with all of the IP inclusions and ultimately I feel in 10 or fewer years the park will have nothing to do with California anymore and should adopt a new name and identity. - Luke

I know this video is several months old, but I only just found your channel. I just want to say that you summed up my feelings on Paradise/Pixar Pier PERFECTLY. Although the 2.0 change didn’t make Paradise Pier perfect, it at least made it a pleasant place to be. People are always curious why I’m not a fan of them injecting more theme into the land with Pixar, but I think that it just comes off as tacky with how they’re doing it. I think that Pixar Pier is more decorated and less themed. That being said, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be and is certainly better than DCA 1.0, but I think that Disney was so close in creating a great park with the 2.0 incarnation that they are slowly taking away

I really miss Paradise Pier. The first time I went to DCA was during the construction of Cars Land and Buena Vista Street. By that time, Paradise Pier was already redone and rededicated. It was the only thing I remember from that trip besides construction walls. We had gone to see the new Toy Story Mania... and that was pretty much it. Most attractions either didn't appeal to me, appeal to my brother, or appeal to my parents. Thank goodness that the only reason we were IN DCA at all was because we had Park Hopper tickets, so we spent the rest of our day at Disneyland. But Paradise Pier holds a special place for me. The two times I returned to DCA before Pixar Pier, were with friends for a band trip and later for Grad Night. It was amazing. I remember the last time I rode California Screamin'. It was my Grad Night, and I had just been ditched by the group I was with, so I texted my only other friend who was there. He ans his girlfriend had said that they would just spend that day alone together. He came over to me though and the three of us had a blast. We rode Scrsamin', I said "I love this coaster. Never change." Literally two months later, they announced Pixar Pier and I never got to ride California Screamin' as it was again. The worst thing is that I was actually at Disneyland a day before Paradise Pier closed, and as much as I wanted to be at DCA to bid farewell to my favorite roller coaster, I couldn't because our tickets were earmarked for Disneyland. I love Pixar. I grew up watching Pixar movies. While I've really only seen a handful of Disney movies, I've seen every Pixar one. I have to be honest though, I don't like Pixar Pier. I still ride Incredicoaster because it is fun, but it will never be as great as California Screamin'. As for the rest of the land, as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't exist. It was not worth the amount of tine and money that went into it. If it had been temporary for Pixar Fest only, like it was originally conceived, it would have been amazing. As a permanent "fix," it's terrible. I would much rather have had them fix Hollywoodland. Not retheme it, just fix it. Put in something better than Monsters Inc. Put something new in the old Who Wants to be a Millionaire building. Paradise Pier was fine as it was. It didn't need a refurb as desperately as other parts of the park, or even other parts of the resort. I would be so much happier if they had take the money they spent of Pixar Pier, and use it to fix at least one problem of the many in Tomorrowland. I would be much happier if they had taken that money and built a third parking garage over the Toy Story parking lot. Instead we he had to sit and watch that money be wasted on a pun. A PUN. You know, the thing that made people HATE the original DCA ? "See how many puns we can throw into a park! Oh you guys didn't like that. *cue Goofy* 'I'll fucking do it again!'" Paradise Pier deserved better. We all deserved better.

Pixar pier is an extremely tacky and not very Disney way of introducing Pixar characters into the park, and I’m disappointed that they didn’t continue to add to the California theme and make it better instead of slapping IPs and calling it a day to already good attractions, this park is becoming another Hollywood studios with them trying to bring unnecessary IPs into attractions that don’t match the parks theming
@silversunlicker
@silversunlicker 5 жыл бұрын
Awe, thank you! I've been saying the IP re theme of DCA is totally tacky. I was introduced to DCA as it started it's transition into 2.0. Once 2.0 was complete the park felt like home. It embodied all the sentimentality and nostalgia minus the cheesy tackiness that people refer to when they say "Disney," as a pejorative. Now in addition to tacking on the Pixar theme in DCA you see attempts to "modernize" the theming in other places such as Downtown Disney. Bob Igor did great resuscitating DCA into 2.0 but it seems as he's exiting the company he is making short sighted decisions that will languish for years. Disney's charm is timeless . The theming of past eras is part of the suspension of disbelief. It enables us to go to a different time and place. A world that never truly existed except in our own dreams. DCA 2.0 had another advantage that it appealed to both locals and tourist, the young and the old.

I've only discovered this video nearly a year after it was originally posted, but it's still as relevant today as it was in the summer of 2018. Pixar Pier has since opened and it's as disappointing and upsetting as you had speculated. The Pier and its offerings have reverted to the tacky application of IP that has nothing to do with what it actually is. In essence, it's "lazy theming" and Disney once again suffers brand withdrawal as a result of this laziness and perhaps a misunderstanding of what story its Imagineers are trying to tell through this land/area. For what it was, California Screamin' was brilliantly themed---it was a modern tubular steel roller coaster themed to look like a Victorian wooden roller coaster typically found at the end of a seaside pier. It didn't suffer the lazy theming of simply having an IP applied to its passenger cars which is typical of amusement parks like Six Flags and CedarFair. Disney excels at storytelling which is re-enforced through the themed environments and attractions in its parks. A roller coaster is almost never just a roller coaster. A roller coaster is themed to be a mine train like in the instance of Big Thunder Mountain in Frontierland or the Seven Dwarfs' Diamond Mine in Fantasyland. A roller coaster can even be a rocket fired into outer space by a giant canon in the instance of Space Mountain in Discoveryland. A roller coaster can be bobsleds traversing the Matterhorn which was the setting of an early Disney live action film, Third Man on the Mountain. All of these great Disney roller coasters tell a story and or reinforces the story being told in its respective land. In the case of California Sreamin, it wasn't a mine train, a bobsled or even a rocket. It was a Victorian wooden roller coaster that belongs at a California seaside pier. California Screamin' is now the Incredicoaster; a seemingly Victorian era wooden roller coaster that appears to be in the Incredible's backyard. What does a wooden roller coaster have to do with the storyline of either of the Incredibles movies? This new group of Imagineers are trying to tell the story of Jack-Jack on the loose within a roller coaster. Sure, guests are treated to the smell of cookies and there are some great audio animatronics of the Incredibles displaying their super powers, but it has nothing to do with the storyline of the Incredibles franchise. Aboard the Seven Dwarfs' Mine Cars, guests get to visit the diamond mine---a setting in the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. With the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Imagineers are telling an original story of a cursed gold mine that re-enforces the overall theme of Frontierland. Perhaps, if a wooden roller coaster was featured in either of the Incredibles movies, its theme would make sense. Guests would have the opportunity to visit a setting within that franchise. But, it doesn't. The attempt of theming of the Incredicoaster is no better than what the original team of Imagineers had done with Goofy's Sky School in the re-theming of Mulholland Madness. But, at least Goofy's Sky School references the 1940 Goofy "how to" short, Goofy's Glider, or am I grossly unaware of a Pixar short that features the Incredibles and a roller coaster? It's sad that Disneyland Resort would abandon the original storyline of Gustav Tinkerschmidt that Imagineers had created for Paradise Pier in favour of the Pixarification of the land. I understand that Disney can make more money by pushing more IP in its parks. But, with an original back story like that of Tinkerschmidt, the toymaker, Paradise Pier could have been as great as Frontierland at Disneyland Paris.

Couldn't have said it better myself, it truly seems they are just putting in IPs on old attractions now for the sake of it in the hopes to seell more tickets or merch. @@ReviewTyme Disney's new priority is synergy over authentic storytelling. I'm also not so much a fan of cloning attractions. It wasn't necessary to bring Ratatouille to Epcot when Hunchback of Notre Dame is a perfectly acceptable IP to represent France. Again, however, I would prefer an original story over pushing more IP in the parks, especially at Epcot. Why not tell the story of the French Revolution or Louis the Sun King? Even Joan of Arc would make for an interesting attraction. I appreciate Iger loosening the purse strings for more investment in the parks, but he's more concerned with making more money for shareholders than continuing Walt's legacy. It's sad. I wish there were someone in a position of oversight, to keep the money men out of Imagineering and parks development.

Paradise Pier as an old boardwalk was a great theming idea. Pixar Pier with a Mickey’s Wheel and an Ariel Ride is a mess. With Pixar and Marvel characters invading all it’s parks, Disney is destroying all the atmosphere of them. Sign of times. Pity!

Having been an AP during its construction and first year, I must say that Pixar Pier is utter garbage. I visited it only once, and that was to ride Midway Mania and to give the “Incredicoaster” a chance at being somewhat tolerable. (It wasn’t)

Finno Yeah.. DCA is in a good position right now. Haven’t you noticed that the park has gotten more popular over the years? Hmmm i wonder why. oh wait, its cause disney is adding good rides that the public can relate to. So when the so called “disney fans” are complaining about everything that disney does, it gets really annoying. Which makes this video very bias because one of those individuals cant view different perspectives.

Together Forever Vlogs This was made before Pixar Pier had even opened, and they were basing it off of concept art. I am in the side of hating Pixar Pier, so eh, to each it’s own. Creativity is less than money now, I suppose.

Wow - did Disney hurt you in your youth? #Bitter. I love DCA now - probably my favorite Disney park in the States. The theming at Pixar Pier is really lovely and the wide variety of ride types in the park is very satisfying.

DCA 2.0 was my favorite of the two parks actually, I spent the majority of my time on buena vista street. But when it first started it was really a hot mess. It went through puberty, and the themeing of the individual lands and the park as a whole became more cohesive. Not just California, but Walt's California. But the newer changes have really lost a lot of that theming. The Peri designed after the boardwalk Lilian loved and that Walt always wanted to incorporate, is gone. HE's not bitter, he's corect. You can like something while pointing out flaws in it.
