I'm always reluctant to recommend varieties for specific regions. That being said the ones Rebecca talked about in the show should work for you. Those were specifically chosen as they are healthy varieties. A lot of what you read regarding Austin roses and disease is about the older varieties. Which is why David took them off the market.

With many of their shrubs their ability to climb is climate specific. Generally warmer climates tend to make some climbers. So they can't really give a blanket description to them.

I appreciate the videos, Paul. Could Rebecca share the “why” behind the suggestion that Eustacia Vye be grown in a cooler climate and growing in shade? Is this d/t fading, growth at the expense of flowering in warmer climates...?
@gmcareed3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, before we ever introduce our roses into the US market, we trial them at several sites around the country. Our staff in Tyler also grow them in their own gardens. From our own observations stateside, we have noticed that Eustacia Vye tends to prefer and perm form slightly better in milder climates or where it get protection from direct afternoon sun. When we make these observations, we like to share them with you as we want you to be successful. Now, gardening keeps us humble. This is not to say you can’t have success with EV in hot, humid climates, especially if you are a seasoned gardener. We like to share info that makes the novice more successful. Of course, it all goes back to the parentage of the plant as to how it responds.

Hi Paul! This was a great video! Thank you for all the info. I found very interesting the discussion about burying the plant below the bud union. I live in Florida where the soil is sandy and full of nematodes. In the case where the rootstock used is fortuniana due to its nematode resistance, do you think the plant should be buried below bud union still? Or above ground to preserve the graft? I love the advantages of an own root plant but worry about the nematodes. Thanks!
