Max von Sydow, the "old priest", was 43 at the time of the movie. They used prosthetics to make him look older. Unlike so many actors before or after him, he actually looked like this when he got older. Dick Smith, the make up artist, was a genius.

Very much true. In addition to the old age makeup on Von Sydow which goes unnoticed by many, Smith’s work on this film stretches across the whole film, and shows the devastation of the other characters. It’s extremely subtle and real.

Dick Smith did the makeup effects in "Amadeus" as well. You couldn't really tell any prosthetics were used. Many effects artists were either tutored or inspired by Smith like Stan Winston, Rob Bottin, Rick Baker, Tom Savini, etc.

I really liked the fact that Regan's possession was gradual instead of instantaneous. Not to mention the fact that this movie was made in the 70s. Made the movie even more realistic because it relied more on good acting than CGI. Would you believe that Linda Blair had to spend some time in a mental institution in order to learn how to act crazy during her possessed scenes. I mean the sheer thought of what Linda Blair had to go through in order to make the character realistic would make anybody's head do a 360.

In case no one mentioned this, the "spider walk" down the stairs was not in the original because the wires were visible and they had no way of removing them back in 72. I saw this at the Ziegfeld theater in NYC opening week. This was the first movie, that I know of, that dealt with exorcism. The book was based on a real life exorcism which the author changes several details. Because they didn't want to offend the Catholic church, they had priests to consult on the Rite of Exorcism and possession to be as authentic as possible.
@darkamora5123
@darkamora5123 2 жыл бұрын
First off I am Catholic so I have a vested interest in believing in God and demons, but while this is based on the real exorcism of a young boy from St Louis the truth of his possession (amongst those who believe in such things) is in doubt. Whilst restrained none of the bruising or scratches that had appeared prior recurred. Also after a long bout of unsuccessful exorcisms the demon suddenly left when, in the boy's presence, they mentioned if it was once again unsuccessful he'd be placed in an asylum and given treatments like ECT. Too many things that spoke of fakery were observed, even for people who believe in the reality of the supernatural, to find it credible today.

Honestly, as a kid born in the early 90's I thought this movie was hilarious through-and-through, but looking at it now, I think the ONE thing that holds up is the practical effects. From simple things like giving the girl an impossibly long snake tongue that can somehow retract completely into her mouth, or to being able to projectile vomit green Nickelodeon slime with a full frontal shot without CGI still left me scratching my head thinking, "how'd they do that?"

Dasha, "The Exorcist" is based on a novel of the same name, written by William Peter Blatty. However, the novel was based on a true story, of an exorcism performed on a 14-year-old boy (in Maryland), in 1949. If you feel up to it, you should see, at some point, "Exorcist 3". Part 3 is considered the real sequel to the first film, not "Exorcist 2", which was panned by the critics. Part 3 is based, again, on a book by William Peter Blatty called "Legion" and is a worthy sequel to the first film. You did a great job with your reaction! You really got this film, and it is a difficult film to watch, for the first time. Thank you!

That was a great reaction. It was cute that your dog was there to check on you and was concerned. I saw this movie at the Drive-In theater with my dad when it first came out. I was only seven years old. It scared the hell out of me. Halfway through the movie they stopped it and turned on all the lights and announced over the speaker system that everyone was to remain in their cars because an ambulance was coming in because someone had had a heart attack. Pretty scary stuff. On a lighter note: fast forward to several years later when I was in my late 30s early 40s, I met William Peter Blatty, the author of the book, and had a chance to have a long conversation with him. He rented us the exorcist. We kinda were sarcastic about it. "Like this movies so old! It won't be scary." And it traumatized us. Do dudes who thought they were tough holding onto each other under a blanket 😂 especially during that upside down descent down the stairs. Scared the living hell out of us. That line. 1. I first saw this with friends when I was 12. Back then nobody paid much attention to what rating system there was. When the doctor is looking at Reagan's skull x-rays and say's there's "nothing in there" I always 🤣 3. The extremely loud banging is for our benefit 4. The spider crawl down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 5. The demon wasn't trying to avoid the exorcism. He was looking forward to it with Father Merrin. 6. Father Merrin and the demon had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 7. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 8 Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 9. Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness of his lack of faith.

"This is the same demon.". That is absolutely correct. The demon was exorcized years ago by father merrin (earlier, the head priests commented that it took months and nearly killed him). Decades later, the demon manipulated events to draw merrin to it for a "rematch." (Hence, the demon naming merrin in the recording-"fear the priest" and screaming his name when he arrived at the house) In the end, the demon was initially dumbstruck when a weak heart killed merrin and later, was giddy about it. The demon did take hold of karras once he openly invited the demon inside (symbolized by the tearing off of karras' saint christopher necklace) but vacated his body just before karras jumped out the window. What ultimately frightened people (besides the slow burn, the effects, and the language) was that evil seemingly won over good and that the devil was more powerful than God.
@PaulSchober
@PaulSchober 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree that the demon "vacated Karras' body" before he jumped through the window. IMO Karras was able to momentarily take control/suppress the demon and then jumped, taking it "with him", hoping that in death the demon would have no earthly vessel.

And just to add another twist, in Exorcist 3, we learn that the Devil allows the soul of a serial killer to enter Karras, effectively sharing the body. He somehow survives, crawls from the cheap coffin and grave, and eventually winds up in an insane asylum for years, where eventually the inhabiting soul of the serial killer begins possessing invalids and forcing them to commit murder. The same cop from the original eventually kills Karras/The Gemini Killer and ends the possession.

Two facts about the film's story: 1 - the ppint of Reagan's possesdion is not the girl itself but for the devil to cause desperation on the adults around her. Reagan's corruption is but a means for the devil to assault others's spirits and cause them to dispair. In that regard the devil partially wins. While Resgan was saved, at least 3 people died, two of them legitimate good men devoted to good and who would had done a lot of good work if they had lived longer lives. Not to mention the sadness of having witnessed such horrors on all those who survived. 2 - the statuette found in the diggint in North Iraq depicts the ancient mesopotanean devil Pazuzu, the lord of flies. In ancient mesopotamia people would call upon Pazuzu (by bribing him with offering) for protection against other demons. Ence why the line in the movie "evil against evil". Pazuzu was a legitimate evil demon but he took side with the humans against other devils but not because of good intentions on his part. Ancient mesopotamia religion was quite fatalistic, ancient mesopotamians didnt believe there was pure good in the world but they were certain true evil existed.

Great reaction! When I went to see this movie was when it came out in theatres. We were seven in our group; most of my brothers, one sister-in-law, one of my sisters and a close family friend. My eldest brother was 25 years old at the time and he sat in the aisle seat. At one point during the movie he jumped out of his seat and landed in the aisle. When he recovered he got up and left the theatre and never came back. The nervous tension was very real in the theatres! The hype from all the stories we had heard was with us. My friend had seen the movie the week before me and said someone sitting in her row had had a heart attack. So before we even went into the theatre we were jittery and scared. Being in the dark with all that nervous tension all around us did not help, but enhanced the scariness of the movie. Also, being Catholics we understood the importance of the exorcism and we also knew this movies is BASED ON A TRUE EXORCISM that had occurred in the 1940s in Maryland to a 14 year old boy. All of this helped to make The Exorcist a very scary movie for all of us. After all these years it is STILL my favourite scary movie of all time!

In the 1950s my uncle, Fr. Angelo Caserta - who was a relatively young priest who had studied for his PhD in Theology in Rome - was the exorcist for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. That is a very difficult assignment for a priest, and it affected him greatly. He wouldn't speak of it until my mother (who was not to be denied information) cornered him, her brother-in-law, in the late 1950s, and asked him about the experience. What he described - which Mom related to me 20 years or so before this movie was ever made - was pretty much what you saw here: things flying through the air, moving on their own, freezing cold in the room, etc. I'm making no judgements or statements of belief. I'm skeptical at best. But I know my uncle was a profoundly loving, intelligent, and truthful man. This is a great mystery for me, a religious skeptic at best. Not sure how to digest these kinds of events.

GREAT reaction, Dasha, I've been loving many of them but this one is special. A few things you might like to know. The actor who plays the older exorcist, Father Merrin, is named Max Von Sydow and he was never "big box office," anything like that, but he was a true star. He appeared in a movie called The Seventh Seal as a knight, returning from the Crusades, who plays a game of chess with Death himself. Just to look at him and listen to him, people thought "This is a knight." Even when he sometimes played villains, we still thought of him as a knight. The younger priest has a beautiful name, Damien, but we've ruined that name over the years. It first belonged to a priest who ran a leper colony in Hawaii, and the character of Father Damien Karras in the movie is a kind of tribute to that. To save the girl, he takes the demon upon himself and then dies. Unfortunately (I think), a later horror movie came out called The Omen, in which a little boy named Damien Thorn was the Antichrist. It's an entertaining movie but not as strong and serious as The Exorcist and now, when we hear the name Damien, we just think "Antichrist." I think it's a bit tragic. Finally, it helps to take yourself back to 1973 to understand the impact this movie had. Some people were beginning to question authority and rebel against society -- think about that movie that the mother stars in -- and I'm not sure much came of that, but it freaked out a lot of other people and they started to worry "Oh no, nothing is sacred anymore, our society is coming apart." So the movie was very much of its time, because it was as if the demon had waited until 1973 to test how strong our faith still was. Nowadays we joke about this movie, but back in 1973 it really "got under the skin" of many of us. I loved some ideas of yours, like the mother buying her daughter a ranch. Thank you!

For my part, I first saw this in the worst possible circumstances, as a freshman at Georgetown University in Wash. DC. it was shown on campus, and as all the film's outdoor scenes were filmed at Georgetown U (where the book author went to school) and in Georgetown, at the beginning it was more screams when somebody's dorm came into view, than for any horror effects. As a freshman, I lived in the building where the actress filmed her speech scene, and in my second year, across the street from where the house and the stairs were. I went to Mass in the chapel where the desecration took place (filmed somewhere else). My third year I lived in the same building where Father Karras supposedly lived. In the end... too close to home to feel comfortable!

Father Merrin was the true target of the demon. Father Merrin faced this demon before and the dig in Iraq was a sign that he was fated to clash with the demon again. Father Karras, though a good man, did not have the power of faith to defeat the demon. He had to sacrifice himself physically to the demon, but could not defeat the demon on a spiritual level. Father Karras was easy pickings for the demon. Unfortunately, Merrin's massive heart attack prevented him from his triumph over the demon.

There are so many hidden messages in this film. It’s not meant for anything else but depths of the story. For example, the cross that was left in her room, she stole it from the church she desecrated. Her position drove her to do those things before we saw it on camera. I really enjoyed your reactions they were genuine. I hope your doggy walk went well

Wishing him -- and you -- the best. 17:48 The captions switched "I'm not Regan" to "I'm not vegan" lol. This director made a very different (not horror) film called Rules Of Engagement that I really recommend, especially since if I remember correctly you're a Samuel L. Jackson fan. The old priest (Max Von Sydow) is from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was one of the last movies he made before his death... other good movies with him are Needful Things and Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close.

Other actresses considered for the role of Reagan incuded Brooke Shields, Jamie Lee Curtis, Eve Plumb (Jan from The Brady Bunch), and actress/singer/comedian Rachael Sweet. Linda Blair did such a great job that it inadvertently hurt her career. Most child actor jobs were for "wholsome family movies". Filmmakers were afraid parents wouldn't take their kids to a movie with "the possessed girl", so she had difficulty finding roles for years after.

Fun fact about behind the scenes of the exorcist in the end after father Charis killed himself. The priest who came to him crying the actor was actually crying he wasn’t acting well I mean technically he was but at the same time he was actually crying because the Director William Friedkin pulled him aside before the camera started rolling and smacked him in the face and then the camera started rolling and then shoved him into the scene. Basically the Director did things to get genuine reactions from the actors I mean the things he did was a little over the top but it’s genius filmmaking at the same time the Director did all kinds of crazy things.

Holy crap, this was the most adorable reaction video ever! I never thought I'd use the word "adorable" in relation to the Exorcist, but this was beyond cute. From the excitement, to the nervous chatter. I loved when Merrin was giving a rundown to what to expect from the demon during the exorcism, and you kept answering him back as if taking notes and was going to be a part of it. That was funny. Even the dog was cute when it came over to church on you. ❤️ You remind me of my daughter in that young enthusiastic approach to viewing a movie. But it nearly broke my heart when you cried. Thank you for uploading. Btw: this is based on a true story about a boy named Roland, back in the 1940s.

Inasmuch as this film is explicitly Christian, it is the very opposite of Lovecraftian. The latter is existential horror because the characters discover that there is no God - only inconceivably powerful entities that do not care about humanity - and the horror comes from learning of one's insignificance. In contrast, the Exorcist is predicated on the existence of God, in particular, the one true God in three hypostases, as well as the devil. Moreover both God and the devil are active in the world and have a great deal of interest in Man as well as each individual person. There is good, there is evil, and the battlefield is men's souls. Humanity is supremely important in this, and the horror comes from people encountering the preternatural events and works of the devil that impose on their heretofore normal lives. In Lovecraftian horror, there is no good or evil, and arguably no souls afterlife or spiritual warfare; Man does not matter - we are but a single short-lived species amongst countless others that will play no important role in the universe. The horror comes from the shattering of a world view that holds that life has meaning - it is atheistic horror.

I had to chuckle when your dog came by to see if you were ok. Way back in the day, I was watching a scary movie (Jacob's Ladder) on my brand-new stereo VCR. My dog was asleep beside me on the couch. I was listening in headphones, so I was totally immersed in the sound, and actually screamed aloud at a jump-scare I wasn't expecting. The dog startled awake, and sat up to see if I was ok - but I started to laugh because the movie had "gotcha'd" me. The dog all but shook her head, jumped down, and went off to bed in the next room. Crazy humans... If you haven't seen "Jacob's Ladder", put it on your list. You might also want to check out "The Babadook" - a beautifully crafted film with layers of meaning.

The technician was probably rewinding the tape through the speaker, and he noticed it sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks. That's how he realized it was backwards English. Either that, or he was just used to how it sounded (it wasn't that unusual in the '70s to play records backwards in order to hear a secret message, as back-masking was a common gimmick used in the recording industry at the time).

Awesome reaction!!! Think I was 10-years old when first saw this movie in the theater when it came out. This is one of those movies where I can still remember the audience reactions!!! CAn remember people laughing nervously at the beginning for nobody knew what to expect. Then, once all the demonic stuff starts happening: popcorn flying through the air, people screaming, people actually fainting, people actually praying out loud, people actually running for the doors, people actually vomiting, and other crazy stuff. For a 10-year-old not really understanding what the impact of the movie was having on the audience, must say that their reactions were way more entertaining than the movie. Looks like you viewed the extended/directors cut which have purchased and seen more out of curiosity as to what was cut out/added - just does not seem as scary as the theatrical version where that version seems to not give the viewer any time to breath or get their thoughts straight.

One thing I kinda wish they hadn’t changed from the novel is that in the book when Fr. Merrin has his heart attack Regan is absolutely furious, ranting about how they would have won this time. It solidifies the idea that whatever is inside Regan is the thing Merrin fought years before, and it makes it clear that Merrin’s heart gave out (a lot of folks think the demon killed him, not realizing that the pills Merrin was taking were nitroglycerin tabs).

The sign that it was a tense movie...your hands were clinched through much of it. When this first came out my parents would not let me go see it. There were news reports of people running out of the theaters shortly after the movie started, people scared out of their minds and some were vomiting. It got a lot of press when it came out and over the years it has certainly held up. Granted it doesn't have the gore, special effects, cgi , etc of today's movies...which makes it all the more amazing. I saw this I think in 1979 at a theater and the place was packed and turned people away. The thing I remember most was I was in the 2nd row from the front and there was a boy and two girls sitting in the front row ahead of me. As soon as the beginning music started one of the girls turned around backwards in her seat and refused to look at the screen. I could see her looking at the horrified faces in the audience, which scared her as badly as if she had actually seen what was happening on screen. Her reactions to everyone else's reactions was priceless. There are sequels to this movie, but honestly I don't think they hold a candle to the first one. Also, I love that your dog came to check on you. Good dog.

That upside down spider walk that Reagan does down the staircase was not in the original 1973 theatrical release of The Exorcist, or the original VHS release and cable TV and Network TV airings. It was a deleted scene that was put back into the special collectors edition directors cut of The Exorcist that came out in 1999. It was originally removed from the movie because the wires holding up actress Linda Blair were too visible on camera, and it wasn't until the advent of CGI that those wires could be digitally erased from the scene.

"The Exorcist" made such a big cultural splash back in 1973 that it led many people to believe demonic possession was an actual phenomena -- to the point where the Catholic Church had to dust off the old books and train priests in the ritual. Since then the practice has spread to other denominations for better and for worse. Just last year a 3-year old girl was killed during an exorcism in a small Pentecostal church in San Jose, California. At any rate, Lee J. Cobb, the actor who played the police detective, played the heavy in the classic films "On the Waterfront" (1954) and "12 Angry Men" (1957). He also played Fyodor Karamazov in "The Brothers Karamazov" (1958). Check out those films when you can.

The reason this is considered the greatest horror movie of all time is because unlike horror movies nowadays, it didn’t rely on the element of jump scares like all movies today. Back in 73’, no one seen anything like this and it was a huge deal. People were depressed, fainting, walking out of the theatre and afraid to go back in. Lots of peoples electricity bills were higher because they needed some light to go to sleep. People became very religious after this came out.

At the end, the next priest tells the cop, the same thing Damian told the cop and in the same manner....I've seen it. Did he get possessed giving last rites to Damian?😮😮😮Hopefully this version u watched had the upside down crab crawl on the stairs, she does!! There's movies out of about 50 good horror movies, I never thought u would have the guts to do. I would put hereditary number 2 after this!! The descent, barbarian, hereditary, the exorcist, sinister ,hellraiser, the witch, the boy, Orphan, drag me to hell, the ring, the grudge, lights out(watch the 2 minute short first!😮)the woman in black, the Conjuring, insidious Annabelle La llarona, Nun movies... It's all part of the Conjuring universe. The first Halloween and Friday the 13th, The Omen, Hellraiser, first evil dead trilogy, smile, and I'll throw in 1982 The Thing, for the gore factor. But the exorcist, is THE horror movie all others are judged by!! Ironically, max was only 42 when he filmed this, he had trouble getting jobs after this because directors thought he was older! Linda did a masterpiece acting job here and should have got a lifetime Oscar. The director William Freidken kept the room at 40 degrees, fired pistols by the actors heads to scare them, and the green slime went into the young priest's mouth wasn't supposed to happen, that's why he looks so surprised! He was a cutting edge director! Max ironically not long before this, did maybe the greatest Jesus movie ever made, the greatest story ever told! He also did Conan, 3 DAYS of the Condor, minority report, and others! The moms back was permanently hurt in the scene where she's thrown down. Linda had to have round the clock security for about 8 months, because people were convinced she was possessed! She couldn't get much work after this either. The detective is a masterclass actor. Arthur Miller first saw him on stage, and said he wrote the play, death of a salesman, for him. He was in the acting masterpiece, 12 angry men! The voice actor is a woman who smoked cigs and drank whiskey every day of her life! She purposely went uncredited for this film! Orson Welles called her the greatest voice actor of all time! This movie, The Thing, Alien and Bladerunner, prove beyond a doubt, that practical effects a are way better than special effects, robotics, and CGI! This also tells u, never get a Ouija board! Somehow without explanation, part of the evil figurine and the Catholic pendant made it to DC. Where they were originally buried in Iraq, I'm sure the pendant was used to keep the demon inside the figurine. But when the Ouija board came out, it released the demon!! Type in here, news footage and stories of people leaving the theater from, The Exorcist 😮😮😮

I believe it's from a true story that happened in Germany in the 50s or 60s. The girl, Linda Blair, couldn't get many acting jobs after this, kinda cursed! But she should have got an Oscar and lifetime Oscar for this! The mom is Ellen Burstin, with many fine acting roles. What she did in Requiem for a Dream, was outstanding!! So many pro tips on this...look up in here, any shorts or documentary on it. It still sets the standard for horror! To put movies up with this I would say first 3 evil dead, drag me to hell( same director 😮) the descent, barbarian, the nun, woman in black, The Thing, The Fly, Alien, the shining, and as good or better than this, hereditary! The old priest was only 42, makeup job. He had some trouble getting roles after this because directors thought he was older! The green puke hit him in the face, it wasn't supposed to but the director had it happen for a more surprised look on his face! Sometimes the director fired gunshots next to an actor, for A very surprised look on their faces! He kept the room at 40 degrees! The mom was permanently hurt during her fight scene with Reagan! The woman who does the voice was originally uncredited, she didn't want it known it was her! Orson Welles called her the greatest voice actress of all time! She smoked cigs and drank whiskey daily her whole life! Linda had to have 24/7 security for almost a year, people were convinced she was possessed! Basically this movie is a second rematch. Marron found the idol, and the Catholic pendant, in the beginning. In Iraq. How they both got here, I don't know. 'm guessing the pendant was with the idol, to keep it contained. Likely it was this demon, Pazuzu or Paimon. Then his exorcism that lasted 6 months in Africa, it was this demon again. Somehow, the pendant made it's way to the younger priest who wore it for protection and a piece of the idol, made it to this house.this is why the old priest, and this demon knew each other. In Iraq, the evil idol, and st judes pendant, were together. As if the pendant was holding back the demon.
