I don't think you can categorize the R series of bikes in with the S series. These are completely different. Boxer vs inline. 2 vs 4 cylinder. Shaft vs chain. I swear the only similarity is the emblem.

In my opinion, the evolution of the S1000RR comes from the previous and discontinued K series. The K1200S and K1300S are better predecessors.

JOLLY ROGERS your absolutely right, I own all three K1200S K1300S hp and S1000RR, it’s crazy that this list doesn’t include Bmw’s five years of research and development for the k1200S as the most technological advanced sports bike of its time with a all new 4 cylinder, 4 valve per cylinder, forged crank with 167 hp and torque that pulls like a rocket, that is absurd, boxer engines are not for performance and shouldn’t be compared. Not saying these bikes that are shown aren’t cool, just need to do better research for this video comparison.

Bmw used the K5 gsxr as a benchmark to beat when developing the first S1000rr its a well known secret, they would have used the fireblade or R1 just as happily if they had the best bike at the time.

The first generation s1000rr is bmw's first modern superbike and the r1100 is a succesor to a lot of boxers with shaft drive. To name a few: r69s, r90s and r100rs for instance. All great bikes but in any case, they have very little in common with the s1000rr.

The R bikes really don't fit in. You should have started with bikes like the K1 or K100RS, continuing with the rest of the K series. These bikes had a bigger influence on the development of the S1000RR. Edit: spelling

I’m sorry, I know some work went into making the video, but it is completely false to say that the S1000RR evolved from any previous BMW motorcycle. In fact, the S1000RR’s history begins with the Suzuki GSXR in 1985... When BMW decided they wanted to get into the super bike world, a completely different team of engineers were assembled and they designed the bike from scratch, closely referring to the 2005 GSXR 1000. Ask anyone who has ridden all four Japanese super bikes to try the first gen S1000RR and they all say “It feels like a gixxer on ‘roids”. The S1000RR shares ZERO lineage with the boxer-engined BMWs of the past.
