It's crazy that.... this part of my life that started out as just "playing a game" could become such a defining part of my experience. The fact that I played these games as a young boy and now I'm watching documentaries on them... like parts of my life becoming history lol! Same with Pokemon too! Thanks for the amazing video!! Truly wonderful narration 💖💖💖

Beautiful, well-paced vid. I really enjoyed watching this, and something I would've loved to have you cover is the vast difference in combat in each game, like how in Diablo 2 enemies were more clustered and threatening; in Diablo 3 an entire room is full of enemies and "skill" is based on how quickly you can kill them all.

Awesome video! Glad you mentioned 'Baal runs' as my cousin went through a phase of making a 'Hammerdin' that consisted soley of farming gear on Baal runs, which became an inside joke in the household! Looking for awesome action RPG games to play with friends I brought up the idea of Diablo 2 as it's a great game, one friend suggested we play 4 as it's the newest, I've always been curious about 3 but never played! I'm excited to see these games for the first time, and again in the up coming years!

Cow level from rumor in D1 to reality in D2 really showed how the developers were connected to the community. I think it was nod-worthy. I thought crafting was also something that might have been worth a mention. But, overall, this was so interesting. I lived through this and had no idea of the backdrop of the stories. I even played 3DO at the store, but my mom said it was too expensive to get.
@MitchellGodsend
@MitchellGodsend 3 жыл бұрын
Ha! The Secret Cow level being a rumor so prevalent in Diablo 1 that the dev's decided to add it into Diablo 2 is actually in my original script - it was one of the things I cut from the final render to trim the excessive anecdotes to keep the video-length down. By crafting do you mean the cube recipes from D2 or the artisans in D3? Either way, I agree that I should have added a bit more about both.

@@MitchellGodsend I never played D3 (for the reasons your video mentioned). Hearing you talk about food and hunger as a cut D1 mechanic, it reminded me of crafting in D2, and I assumed there was something in D3. Just a way to draw is into our heroes outside of "go somewhere, kill something, get gear, repeat." I loved your video. Such great content. Sorry you couldn't get everything in!

honestly, I feel bad for Jay Wilson. He worked on the original Dawn of War games which were phenomenal. I feel like he just really loved Diablo and wanted to make a true sequel but the suits forced in the RMAH and that changed the entire game and he started getting more and more depressed, leading him to that twitter fiasco and general depressive state. The actual gameplay, action, and pacing of D3 is phenomenal. but the progression systems fell kind of flat due to it all being forced to revolve around the auction house. I understand the attempt to move away from tying too much power into a character and pushing it all into the actual loot, but it just didn't work out in practice since they had nothing they were balancing around and numbers crept up into the trillions. That and Metzen's story was really fuckin weird considering how amazing his stuff was pre-WoW I played a lot of D2 as a kid and wasn't the biggest fan of it since everything took so long, but I LOVED WoW growing up (weird contradiction). But I don't really agree with all the Diablo 3 bashing, even if I'm not a very big fan of the ARPG genre. I much prefer games like dark souls and monster hunter where skill based combat is the focus instead of playing something that feels like mowing my grass like Diablo does. I think blizzard realized that the hook was getting more gear and getting more powerful, and they tweaked the droprates to push an accelerated gearing path because most players would just not play the game if it took too long to gear up, and most players who had grown up with D2 were adults with families and full-time jobs. It's easy enough for me to talk my friends into playing a D3 season for a couple weeks, but I have a feeling getting anybody to play D2 with me will be like pulling teeth because they never played it back in the day and don't realize just how long it takes to get shit done. the world is much more complicated these days and it's nearly impossible to live as a single person on minimum wage (in the states at least), and therefore most players have much less time to play than they used to. I'm just hoping D4 can find a healthy balance and add a bit more skill expression into the combat like Lost Ark has, but only time will tell. The rogue's mechanical skill floor seems to be a step in the right direction but I really don't want the game to be playable one handed because the entire game ends up being a gear check like the last 3 games.

Seriously.. I liked vaniall D3, never felt the need to use the auction house.. though i come from an overwhelmingly SP point of view about D2. And sure, D3 wasnt as gooda s D2, that's true. But let's not get on high horses about story and such... no one ever cared about a Diablo story really. Look at marius: "I followed the wanderer. why? plot needed me to" "you found me and I exposition dump all of that to you tyrael eventhough you were there for most of it" ... come on. doesnt make the game bad but thats not great writing. what d3 did very very well was combat fluidity. and still does. there is not a single ARPG that gets combat as good as D3 does. Yea, to me D2 is much more fun due to it being superior in many other ways. But please, get off Battlecrap and start levelling a Barb with no shared stash all through normal to hell without using/watching speedrun videos ;-) Thats not really.... that enjoyable. And to be fair: Community fucked the Item system in D3. Yea, auction house had its influence but crybaby community that wanted everything RIGHT NOW. (you know, the same kinda idiot who goes and buys my manajuma knife for 50€ cuz that's the hot stuff right now). it wasnt perfect, of course not. but bumping the drop rates by several thousand percent, the damage buffs and the set buffs. basically making rares entirely irrelevant and handing every character at the start of ladder an entire set, which basically is endgame gear so they stop crying that they dont find the items quickly that all the streamers are using and the guides are telling them to use. D3 community is one of the biggest problems of D3. Change my mind.

Great write up. I liked everything, except I think you were a bit unfair saying you can only use 4 skills in Diablo 3. It's 6* skills. Left and right mouse button. Also, the way you say it makes it sound like each class only has 4 skills total. Just to clarify it's 30 per character I believe. I'm sure it was just a rag on how you're locked to a maximum amount of skill slots. Which I agree sucks. But in the end, I don't think there's many Diablo 2 builds that would utilize more than 6 abilities in endgame.

Excellent video until you started talking about D3. It's obvious that even thinking about D3 "slowly kills you" and therefore you almost only highlight the negatives, both objective (which is fine) and subjective. You did of course point out that your D3 section was gonna be more opinionated so that's fine. I just think you sold it a bit short. I have almost 2000 hours in D3 and probably as many in D2 but no tracking so hard to say hehe. Both good and different games. But as a said, excellent video.

Was thoroughly enjoying this video until the Diablo 3 section, while I appreciate Diablo 3 has serious flaws, literally laughing while you describe the classes just dumped the quality of content through the floor. You simply let yourself down. For anyone else watching, expect the tone to completely shift after the Lord of Destruction content ends, as personal feelings suddenly get too much to remain balanced. Real shame. Thanks for the first hour!

I think D3 is currently best in terms of both more modern game play and look. It just needs controller support and offline for solo play like DR2 does. And though D2R looks fantastic and has high quality cutscenes, the gameplay itself is still too antiquated with all the heavy inventory management. The real demons here are managing all those potions and scrolls and going back to town to unload gear for the tenth time in a row from the same dungeon. Overall D1 is probably best for straight up gameplay alone if you can ignore the ancient graphics. For a good balance between the two though, I'd have to go with 3. It's definitely not perfect and can still use some key improvements, but so far it's got my interest more than 2R does.

I absolutely hated the dumpster fire that was vanilla D3 with the broken loot and the auction house, but this video is called "The Evolution of Diablo" and up until that point in the video I feel that was accurate but when it came to D3 it felt more like a hate thread on the official D3 forums from 2012. One thing you mention that really bother me is the balooning of numbers making it so dumb. They now have to replace numbers by letters. I hope D4 doesn't go that route because it will reach a point the damage numbers will be include more letter than numbers.

While overall this video is an awesome piece of gaming documentary, I can't but voice one complaint. That video transition effect you are using everywhere, the one that looks like a glitch in the video stream - it is horrible. Every single time I see it, the first thing that comes to mind - "Oh, he has a corrupted part in his video", even though I know it is not the case. This creates an extremely annoying feedback loop that forced me to basically treat this video like a podcast and listen to it, rather than watch, lest my eyes started bleeding.

Kinda feel bad to be the mood crusher here but I really want to express my emotions. I highly enjoyed the documentary style until chapter 5. This was simply outstanding. What followed was, and yeah there was some kinda warning, a 20 minute Diablo III rant at the end. It was such a letdown because your documentary was one of the rare examples of KZbin in 2021 without any hate, cynical comments or sarcasm. So what started out so good ended up yet again in such a cyncial rant about someone who really hates something (I'm not the biggest D3 fan by myself and you even had valid points here). But with the weird foruth wall breaking near the end, the cynical comments and your lackluster commitment at chapter 6, I'm really baffled to see that your own personal disappointment overran the professional aspect of your otherwise fantastic video. I won't change my thumb from up to down, but it was important for me to tell you at least what I think (don't know if you will really read this Mitchell). I never watch videos of this lenght in one session, but came here back everytime I had time to spare or taking a little snack. This last part really was something I didn't expect. I agree. I often think about redoing the ending and reuploading the video - but I always remember the reason why the ending turned out the way it did. There's a whole explanation for why it turned out that way, but the extremely short and somewhat dismissive version of it is: there was no information about the game *at all* because Blizzard didn't care about it *at all.* That's not my opinion, that's the preponderance of the evidence. If I ever decide to redo the video, I'll have to just remove the D3 section almost entirely.

@@MitchellGodsend Your video accurate to the emotions of a majority of players that played Diablo through the years and what people were expecting out of the third installment. Letting the emotions show in the video was a good representation of how it happened. Let someone else provide the unbiased documentary of D3. You represented me here, and I appreciate it. Some may call it an echo chamber, but I see it as my emotions receiving validation.

Dude. It’s wild how much people disliked Diablo 3. I guess playing D2 and then waiting 10+ years expecting something like D2.5 had a lot of people feeling bad.

You'da have to have been on that train during that time. Playing each installment (D1,D2, LOD). Seeing it grow each time. Then seeing it's divergence in gameplay and removing core features (applying stats, Skill trees, 8 player, open dueling, player to player trading, 4 spells, Flashy color filled screens, etc). It was a rough transition and an rough early gameplay loop that drove people off.

@@tlanca yeah. I guess it’s one of those “you had to be there” type things. I didn’t play D3 when it came out cause it had WoW graphics and they were ugly. But I picked it up when the necro came out in the expansion and the game was pretty solid.

I think that the hot-swappable skills of D3 gets a bad rep. I liked it. I liked that I didn't have to spend thousands of hours if I woke up one day and wanted my barbarian to be good at throwing axes rather than swinging swords. I never made it too far past normal in D2 because I'd get bored of spamming the same skill or having to pass on a neat axe because I spent 15 points in Sword Mastery.

Drop rates at the beginning of D3 were not only low, they were completely messed up. I was playing as Shaman and for hours on end I would get good items that were not for my class. That was a intentional design to force people to use AH. Otherwise you couldn't progress on higher difficulties because all the good/decent loot that would drop was NOT for your class.

Awesome video! There aren't that many quality long form analysis videos on KZbin, but this one was absolutely fantastic. This also made me consider playing D1, since it's the only one of the games I haven't played. Keep doing what ya doing!

You know what part of my problem with D3 was? I got into it when it released on console admittedly BUT as someone who LOVED Diablo 2 I hated the art style and how the loot would ALWAYS fit your character. While I know it was better for building a character, D2 made the world feel more alive when a wolf helm would drop on a Paladin or Sorceress playthrough.

A good example of making characters a little too strong is realizing which skills are best and getting gear that makes them murder. My Zon rocks a Windforce but instead of spamming Multi Arrow I have her set up to use Strafe. Mows things down. For physical immunes I switch to Magic Arrow and it hits HARD with her gear. She can solo practically everything short of the Ubers. My Sorceress is great but with the immunities in Hell being so common once you get cold immunes you're kind of screwed unless your Merc can handle them. The only thing I didn't like about the game is how rare a lot of things are. I never found my own Windforce, not in the original and not in Resurrected. I had to trade for it. And to trade for it I had to farm a ridiculous amount of hours just to find something, or things, that equate to its value. There's also times when a key piece of gear for a build just won't drop. The higher tier runes I kind of understand. Had a Cow run in the beginning of Resurrected's launch that dropped two Lo runes. Felt really lucky. The highest I've seen on my own is some Ist runes. I think I have a Zod on a mule somewhere. If you want an exercise in patience try to farm Pindle for his rarest drops.

I remember going to a friends house and we'd play Diablo all night. It was a lot of fun but OH MY GOD I SUCKED AT IT. So I bought it for my playstation and started playing solo to get familiar with the mechanics of the game. After I "got gud" my friend and I made it out mission to kill Diablo. Man, those were fun days lol. The 90s were the best.

I loved Diablo 3 at launch. It was a good 2 weeks of just binge but yea, it ran out pretty quick once I finished the campaign. I have since played Diablo on and off for hundreds of hours. But fuck me, yes the story was dog shit, the drop rates pre-2.0 were dog shit, now the drop rates are way to high haha. Lots of problems and in retrospect its really sad what D3 was and is today. Worth the $70 tho. Also, how in gods name was the real money auction house ever a thing?

Big facts on Diablo 3's initial release was a god damn disaster. I was so unbelievably hyped for this game to release. Me and a buddy played from 1-60 together. The story was mediocre, and the loot was terrible. Between two of us we saw a SINGLE legendary item drop.... AND it was trash. Reaper of Souls was a huge improvement over the original game, but the overwhelming power of gear was pretty lame. I also didn't enjoy Set items being the most powerful things, forcing you to play whatever cookie cutter build was best. I DO enjoy seasonal game play, so I do hope to see seasons continue in ARPGs, although PoE does a much better job.

HI HELLO D3 DEFENDER AND ADORER HERE: uh. in the spirit of “it’s 3 am and i am half asleep”, i won’t write an entire college level essay on this, but hear me out: look into the worldbuilding and story of d3. Not saying make a video on it, moreso just. Look into it yourself because there is a surprising amount there. I played d3 on release year when I was fairly young, so I don’t think I fully appreciated (or supposedly, fully hated) the combat mechanics, because my main focus for the game was the story, the world, and just how immersive it all was. As I said, I’m not saying “oh yeah you did a grave sin rewrite or remake the video” and more… Play D3 like a visual novel game with combat elements. I know it’s not how it was advertised or intended to be played, but oh man does it make an awesome difference.

You, Sir, did a damn good job here. Give this man the like and subscribe he deserves. PS: i dont expect much of D4, better say: nothing. they screwed us with D3, the expansion and Diablo Immortal, who in his right mind believes this will somehow magically change on the next release. Blizzard is dead, its not even the shell of what its been, even a new created necromancer cant survive that corpse.

My first Diablo was Diablo 3 (at launch). I remember hating the thought of the in game auction house, but it wasn't what had me shelf the game. It was the fact that there wasn't much to do. Drop rates were so low and build diversity was just not worth it because of drop rates and lack of content. I came back to Diablo 3 just last year because a buddy of mine told me the game was heavily discounted on ps4 and was shocked to see how much the game had changed. It was honestly, no kidding, very fun for us. We had an amazing time and lost sleep because of it. That being said, I love to hear that D3 was the absolute worst of the franchise. If that is Diablo at its worst, then I can't wait for Diablo 4's release because it sounds like they are going back to their D2 roots. I think I'm obsessed lately. I'm just watching every single thing DIablo on the internet waiting for D4.

haven't played D1 and never got past the desert in D2, but even so, this one still found D3 to be...almost disappointingly easy. it starts fine, but you rapidly start outpacing enemy difficulty to the point that this one needed to increase the difficulty just to keep enjoying it with a modicum of difficulty, and it was STILL oneshotting almost everything with the sorceress beam. On it's first playthrough at that! This one even remembers its second playthrough, a necromancer, didn't die once until the final boss of Reaper of Souls. Granted, it was playing on what's probably still the newest patch, and on the Switch version at that, if that effects anything, but still! Might play a bit while waiting for PSO2's maintenance to end, thanks to your vid. We do enjoy the game, explicitly as 'turn brain off', quasi-mobile type of game Really should pick up the D2 remaster some time. Or sail the seven seas for a new copy of the original; bought the battle chest back in the day, but lost the disks.

I did enjoy Diablo 3, but I was also brought into the series with it. And that was on the PS3 where there was no auction house and the controls were much easier, so they through even more monsters at you to compensate, I believe. But you do have very good and valid points. The game is fine now, but it definitely isn't the best. I have since played Diablo 1 and 2, and they are much better games, objectively.

Thank you for this amazing look at the development history of the franchise. I'll openly admit I'm a newcomer to Diablo as I started at the launch of D3 but the game didn't stick with me until Adventure mode came out later on. I wholeheartedly understand and sympathize with you on the frustration at how the series changed as I've watched a similar fate occur to Phantasy Star Online where it's sequel which while it performed commercially well ruined what made the original so well loved to the point the only similarity it has is in name only. Hope to see your coverage on Diablo 4's development cycle in the future!

Would love to See an Updated take on Diablo 3. I Don't believe the Videos Creator would Change his mind overall, I do do believe we'd see some positive changes. (Especially in Current season). Diablo 2 is my Favorite (Probably always will be), Diablo 4 is coming out soon (I'm probably going to love it), and I'm not a "Fan" of Diablo 3... But I sometimes go back to Diablo 3 occasionally, just to see the changes, It's not "bad" anymore. It still wont outshine 2... probably ever... BUT, I am slowly starting to enjoy diablo 3 a little when I need a break from the other (Superior) Diablo games.

I’m so glad that I didn’t have a gaming PC at the time Diablo 3 came out and missed all the auction house fiasco. A few years later I got the chance to play Diablo 3 on PlayStation and, even though it wasn’t nearly as fun and the previous game, It was very enjoyable since the console version was much more balanced, with better loot drops since it never had that dreadful auction house.
