I know some one who's a hobbyist and makes some really good old school real deal crackers 5 g of flash powder for the small ones 10g for the medium 15g for the large and 20g for the extra large although I do not suggest setting off anything higher than a five at a neighborhood get together lol 😂

Simple answer. Our overprotective government created a black market for them. They used to be pretty common prior to the Child Protection act in 1966.

Firecrackers that we had back in the 70's were Black Cat firecrackers. We'd untwist them from the main fuse and light them off individually. Then there were the bottle rockets (with and without report), Roman candles, cherry bombs, and finally M-80's.

Sadly the KZbin compression algorithm squashes the differences in volume to nearly nothing. Would love to hear the raw audio from the camera or better yet be there in person to get the actual effect.

I experimented when I was younger in my early teens. I would unravel my firecrackers and use tester cologne bottles, fill them up with what I collected from firecrackers. I would pack the tester little bottles up all the way to the top, put a small hole in the plastic tester cap for the wick. Now to be safe I would dig a small hole in the ground and place the tester bottle in, cover with dirt so wick was only showing, did not want glass flying everywhere. Made a big boom, just fun stuff back in the day. I would say kids do not do this, I do not think they even have the tester cologne mini bottles the size of a lady finger anymore.

I think it was in the 1960s that they made a law that firecrackers could only have 50 milligrams of flash powder, but some of those seem more like cherry bombs I remember.
@kimnice
@kimnice Ай бұрын
It's silly that in your country, at some states, you can buy an assault rifle, but firecrackers can only have 50 mg of flash. They don't really offer that small options here. Few years ago had this fire cracker strip that had 3000 crackers and each one of them had 200 mg of flash (0,5 XL Celebration Cracker). At the moment 2000mg-units are the biggest they are selling.

Back in the mid 1970s, there was a bodega owner in my hometown who would sell fireworks under the counter each year leading up to the Fourth of July. Nothing fancy, Thunderbomb(Horse Brand) firecrackers for 25 cents a pack and some simple little paper-rolled bottle rockets on a red-dyed skewer stick who's brand I can't remember for 35 cents a twelve pack. It was enough to get me into the spirit each year and all I would need to have even today. Especially the Thunderbombs.

The pop-its have a very small amount of silver fulminate, which is a very sensitive high explosive. Regular crackers have flash powder, which is usually made with potassium perchlorate and aluminum powder (at least that's the safest and simplest flash mix)

What about cherry bombs? (Before my time) but during my time after the popper type they used to make I believe they were called lady fingers? They usually came in a pack or strip with I want to say 50 or 100. No bigger than 3/4" we would take them apart which means they all had fast wicks besides 1 lol. They were weak enough that if you were ballsy enough u could pinch from the bottom and not lose a finger but definitely strong enough to hurt yourself pretty bad if u tried to actually hold it vs pinching the bottom.

I'm kind of surprised that the titanium cracker manufacturers don't use either magnesium or even aluminum powder. Many moons ago, I used to make my own firecrackers using a mixture of plaster of Paris (oxidizer) and magnesium or aluminum powder (fuel). I learned it from a book I mail-ordered in my teen years (yeah, that long ago) called, The Improvised Munitions Handbook, which, amazingly, is still available and can be ordered from Amazon. You can still, to this day, get aluminum (ok, aluminium for all you British English speakers) from paint supply sellers, and magnesium powder from chemical supply sellers, plaster of Paris from any hardware store.

But when someone got the bright idea to start removing people's mail boxes from their posts with them. I think that was the start of the end of good fireworks. But you talk about sending a mailbox into orbit the old stuff would send it. Dont ask me how I know that. Lol
