SIDE NOTE: There are some who speculate that Russ would look like a giant Wulfen if/when he should emerge from the Warp, but I don't think that's the case. For one, the Primarchs aren't subject to the same genetic "flaws" as their cloned and manipulated Astartes offspring. Primarchs also have very different appearances within the Warp (or Webway) than they do outside of it - for example: Corvus is a literal shadow monsters inside the Warp, but when he steps outside, he is still "normal" Corvus; Vulkan appeared as a quadrupedal dragon with fangs and everything in the Webway with Magnus, but then was "normal" Vulkan when he came back out. The Chaos entities are powerful, but they don't have the ability to just physically and permanently alter a loyalist Primarch on a whim. It would have to be surrendered to, embraced, etc, as the demon Primarchs have shown. The Warp is also a separate reality from the material realm, so you don't necessarily carry with you any traits between the realities. While still loyal and attached to one deity - the Emperor (which he has irrefutably been proven to be, in canon) - Chaos can't simply corrupt, taint, or alter the physiology of a Primarch. The Wulfen themselves have suffered horrendous mutations, but they are weaker and "less than" a Primarch. At their core, they are still loyalist Space Wolves. They still hunt Chaos. They are still single-minded. Perhaps in the Warp, Russ would appear as a giant wolf monster - the perfect hunter - but would likely still look like Russ when he came back out, if the canon held true.

What people misunderstand about Leman Russ is that his biggest weakness is that he always loved his brothers. He held back against Angron, hesitated against Horus, and begged Magnus not to continue down his current path. He saw "maleficarum" and "sorcery" as dangerous and incredibly self-destructive and was trying to save Magnus from himself. He never wanted to fight any of his brothers from the outset. That's why hes my favorite primarch. Edit: I also think part of the reason Magnus changed his view is simply hindsight. Russ was right about his involvement with sorcery. I think he partly realized that Leman was trying to prevent something like the events at Prospero from happening to begin with. Leman Russ was trying to look out for Magnus and only after the Heresy does Magnus realize it.

Russ was a massive hypocrite. He claimed what Magnus was doing was dangerous, all while maintaining Warp tainted Librarians, in his own legion. Then, when given the chance, was too happy to slaughter innocent men, women, children and the old and infirm, in his thirst for blood on Prospero. Space Wolves are more thirsty for Human blood, than the Blood Angels.

The thing that always bugged me is the Space Wolf attitude to Psykers. The Rune Priests are psykers, yet they and Russ spout all this 'sorcery is bad' hypocracy. The White Scars have similar mystic sorts of Psykers and they fully acknowledge that a) they're Psykers and b) they need to be ruthlessly trained to safely harness their abilities. It's this one hypocracy that I can just never get behind 30k Space Wolves and by extension Russ.

@@gwilym1991 I actually disagree that they were hypocrites about it for 2 reasons. 1. In Prospero Burns, a Space Wolf Rune Priest talks to a Thousand Sons Librarian about this. He attempts to explain that there is a difference between "psychic ability", and "sorcery". In his view, what they did was within the bounds of the "psychic", but the Thousand sons stepped over the line and went too far with it. They weren't wholly against the use of psykers, and I believe didnt think the Thousand Sons were guilty of "Maleficarum" until partway through the battle at Tizca, when the Thousand Sons completely gave in to their abilities. 2. Space Wolves claim that their magic comes from Fenris, which could be partly true. It seems that their home planet not only has basically "world soul", but has actively aided the Space Wolves before. Add that with their natural resistance to the warp and they *might* have a legitimate claim.

These moments in which one Primarch of one side acknowledges something about one of his brothers that fought on the other side of the Heresy are particularly interesting, it is as if just for a moment they are able to beat the conditioning of their own creation, as they were made to be rivals, and even the twisted influence of Chaos, they are more dangerous this way, when the clouds of ego and hate are not blocking their mind.

I'll tell a story from +15 years ago. When i was at my first day at uni i meet a random from my year and at first glance i didnt like him. Fate had it we ended in the same grup so we HAD to meet each other on daily basic and one day we had too much free time between seminars and being only two guys in the grup we ended alone having a stroll at the town square me being form the town and him a outsider showing him the palce. As the time passed and we talk, we ended with the same funny conclusion "by the end of the day we will be each other WORSE ENEMY or BEST FRIENDS..." His kids still call me their best uncle, wished the sapce wolf call Magnus uncle too, but sadly i think they went with the first choice. Have a nice day everyone.

Let the master of the Ultramarines have his "few". The Vulka Fenryka combined with the Cults of Prospero would have put down any other force in my opinion. Those two Primarchs fighting together would be a peril to anyone outside of The Emperor. Bigger opposites than Fulgrim and Ferrus and could compliment each others abilities even more so than any other two (Legions and Primarchs both). The lost potential is boundless in it's depth.

I think his "admiration" of the Space Wolves is due to his perspective from Chaos. He admires their focus as the nature of Chaos is unfocused. Perhaps being more efficient in achieving a goal or mission objective than the forces of Chaos typically are, by nature. What commander wouldn't respect such a quality?

I think Magnus comes to admire the Wolves in part to sooth his own ego. His legion didn't lose at Prospero because of his bad judgement or any failing on him or the thousand sons, no they're just unique in their ability to be amazing warriors designed to fight sorcerors.

There are members of Leman's 13th company who can use the same potent sorceries as the Thousand Sons. These were the marines he look with him when he left Bjorn behind. It makes me wonder if Russ might have gone somewhere to understand the nature of the warp in a deeper level, beyond the corruption of the Chaos Gods. If Russ is going to return and face Magnus, possibly even try and save him, he needs knowledge to do it and that is what he is searching for. (Magnus is probably just keeping tabs on him because he probably is really curious as to what his could probably be and confronting Russ early is pointless as Russ will always win and Magnus can't die because Tzeentch has his soul. So both Russ and Magnus are basically waiting for the "Wolftime" to occur when time and fate bring them together.) (Tzeentch probably lets this play out as Kairos Fateweaver's existance proves Tzeentch's dominion over change and fate DOES have limits and things can occur that are beyond his control

My wolf brother may be little dumb, but I would trust him with my life. We were the only friends to Constantin Valdor, arguably Emperor's favourite. Guilliman had named us his Dauntless Few (sucks what happend to Sanguinius and Ferrus but hey, only best of us can remain). Emperor had us both in high esteem and trusted us with important jobs. Imperial Fists and the Space Wolves are sworn brothers even 10.000 years later. We had it good, then Horus and Lorgar messed it all up, those bald twats, goes to show you don't trust bald Primarchs (Unless it's Vulkan, he's good, we even hugged once). The problem with Lehman Russ in this case is different writers as well as in lore characters seeing and portraying Russ in a different light. To my knowledge Russ did not 'care' for Magnus. He was in some instances specifically given orders from the Emperor himself to take Magnus alive but then had no suspicion on Horus who suddenly told him, to execute magnus even when the sisters and Constatine Valdor is first hand proof that they were supplied by the Emperor himself NOT the warmaster. And with that said, they had agreed upon arrangements when to meet up, and when to engage all of which Lehman Russ, rushed because like the World eaters he reveled in war, destruction and looting, as well as just violence and bragging rights. When Valdor told him it's not too late, AND they could work more coordinately to capture magnus, Lehman rushed off and got into a duel that he couldn't disengage from, and even AFTER he turned the only Primarch that could've sat on the golden throne to save their father from their current fate, Russ showed no regret he was only annoyed he'd personally been tricked and hadn't killed magnus. He truly didn't have a human care for magnus or the thousand sons as we shown when he tried to kill them before for looting rights. It's annoying when people keep defending Russ~ he's loyal, but abit of a dunce something like Lion. They are incredibly powerful characters but they let that go to their heads and their egos have literally almost killed other primarchs or for Russ, turned one ally into an enemy.

I must stress, that the truth is more complex, that what you just said. Horus didn't change the order! Horus never directly commanded Russ, but what he did, was to inform Russ exactly what kind of treason, that Magnus had committed. The Emperor (true to form) had told Russ next to nothing, Valdor likewise. So Horus could spin that lack of detail and suggest to Russ, that Magnus would never come in peacefully. Horus played and goaded Russ, priming him for a kill. Once Russ committed to (treasonous) assault, there were no mercy and Russ fought with malice. But he did care. It kind of breaks him later in the Heresy, as Malcador explains to the Three brothers on terra in "The Lost and The Dammed"

It's been a while since I read Prospero Burns. Why did Russ talk to a someone he thought was a spy instead of just contacting Magnus directly? Was communication blocked or something? Even if it was, how was the spy supposed to get the info to magnus? I've always said Prospero Burns does a great job of making two really smart characters look like complete idiots... but this feels fucking looney tunes...

He did sent send several messages that were ignored, and he did have his orders (tho they had been 'moified' by Horus). Russ tried. I might be mis-remembering this bit but i think Magnus was still realing from sending his psyche across the solar system and angering his pops

I think you are giving Russ too much credit to be honest. He wanted the conflict, it was clear in a thousand sons. He was brash and arrogant and self righteous. It should also be clear, Russ messed up on Prospero. While that does not vindicate Magnus, he did plenty wrong, the fact that he is perceived to plead for peace in the burning of Prospero does not absolve him of the fact that he allowed his distaste and lust for combat override not only his common sense, but the direct order of the Emperor. For a supposedly superior being, he never once questioned why the fleet wasnt in place to defend against him, nor the defence grid. He would have known Magnus would be aware of what was coming and not once did he ask a single question, he obliterated innocents and another legion against instruction. One throw away line in a series of books numbering in the hundreds does not counter the countless brash and battlethirsty actions. Just like Magnus, he has done a LOT wrong.

The Emperor ordered the Ultramarines to level Monarchia, kiliing millions then forced Lorgar to kneel in there ashes. The slaughter of innocents is kinda a thing with big E. Also Horus tampered with the orders, and the Adeptus Custodes and Sisters of Silence went with the Wolves and were perfectly happy with the slaughter The entire thing was a mess, but unfortunately was inkeeping with how Big E runs things

Hours changed the order from the Emperor from bring Magus bag for censure to destroy Prospero. Russ and the wolves being the loyal legion aka attack dogs that they are did what they were ordered to do. Don’t forget the Coustodes as well as the sisters of silence were there also and did more then there share of killing and destroying.

If Leman Russ is guilty for something that is that he wasn't able to tell that Horus have turn to a traitorous son of a b**ch & allow himself to be used by him & trusted his words that the order change from "arrest Magnus & bring him in front of the Emperor.." to "kill Magnus & his Thousand Sons & burn their planet to the ground.." that's his only guilt other than that he was just following orders, as usual.

I believe the rift between Magnus and leman is truly unnecessary. Magnus was created to swim the great ocean and he did it better than any of his brothers but leman seemed to believe he had the right to tell his brothers what to do simply because the title of emperor's executioner went to his head; his belief in himself blinded him to his hatred of Magnus not his abilities or gifts. He will always be my most hated primarch

Yeaah i agree, i am rather new to 40k and the lore but from what ive read and heard so far, people seem to believe that Russ can do no wrong, just cause he was appointed executioner doesnt mean he's always right, dude is straight up arrogant at times it seems to me
