Nahhh metal in Europe was so much better and creative at the time. Nu metal was just the same American commercial response, just combined grunge, rap, and sprinkled some thrash. Meanwhile in Europe there was an explosion of subgenres. The best US bands at the time were not part of the nu metal scene.

I agree the first time I was introduced to metal was at a friends house ages ago, they where playing “down with the sickness” by disturbed, it opened my mind up to lots of different music and I’ve been hooked on metal since then.

1994-1996: Nu metal emerged from a variety of influences, including rap rock, funk metal, and alternative metal. Bands such as Rage Against the Machine, Faith No More, and Tool were early influences. Korn's self-titled debut album in 1994 is often cited as the first nu metal album, with its heavy guitar riffs, hip hop-inspired beats, and raw emotional lyrics. 1997-1999: Nu metal exploded in popularity, with a number of bands achieving mainstream success. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot were among the most successful, with their aggressive sound and visually striking performances. Other notable bands include Deftones, System of a Down, and Papa Roach. 2000-2002: Nu metal continued to dominate the charts, with Linkin Park, P.O.D., and Disturbed among the most successful bands. However, the genre began to face criticism for being too formulaic, with many bands employing similar elements in their music and visual style. 2003-2004: Nu metal's popularity began to wane, with many bands moving away from the genre or breaking up. Linkin Park's album "Meteora" was a commercial success, but signaled a shift towards a more mainstream rock sound. Other bands, such as Korn and Papa Roach, experimented with different styles and incorporated more electronic elements into their music.

I totally wasn’t expecting to be hit with Fungus-era Incubus as the second pick! They absolutely wore their influences on their sleeves early on (RHCP, Mr. Bungle, Primus), but I always thought they had their own sound. The whole band were individually great musicians, but particularly the playfully weird lyrics and the very memorable and hummable guitar solos always stood out to me. SCIENCE would blow my teenage mind, and thoroughly ruined all other music for a solid 12 months after I first heard it.

The thing I like about Linkin park is that they were mature and built their lyricism from hard struggles, and it tied into the awesome instrumental, and plus, mike shinoda was a great rapper, and it was amazing how they went from mike to Chester while the instrumental turns on the style of their lyrics.

Great List. To me Nu metal has roots in the late 80’s and early 90’s with Faith No More and various hardcore bands experimenting with new rock at the time, I believe Korn was the first band to popularize the style of rock that became nu metal, you chronicled the growth of nu metal incredibly accurately, the first nu metal band i heard was drowning pool and i loved them immediately, People love to gatekeep amd be elitist about it but at the end of the day I listen to music for me not for anyone else and everyone should as well, do it for yourself not for others people! Also thank you for including Lostprophets as they where easily one of the best bands of there time.

From my mid teens to early twenties. Late nineties nu metal really spoke to my high school anger and frustrations. When I got my first good job in 2001, and also had mellowed out A LOT, I met people there that started introducing me to a ton of new music, and by around 2002 I had completely checked out of this style of music. I don’t even recognize half of the songs after 2002 or so. Still this video brought back some awesome memories and had clips of songs I hadn’t heard or thought about in twenty years. 👍

@@GREG_Khar-NÜ-Metalhead2000 that's absolutely insane to even consider. She hates me is a Nirvana rip-off, between rate me and dumb. Most of their CD that debuted was nothing but a Nirvana and days of a new ripoff Kid Rock, I can't think of one song that's even close to nu metal. I am the bull-god is a general rap rock song, where the guitar work is pretty much 90s alternative. There's nothing metal about it.. ba wt da ba it's nothing but an EFG scale. At the time I guess you could consider it more of an ac-dc except more modern. Nothing was nu-metal about devil without a cause, or cowboy, or anything on that record. The first step to any new metal song is dropping D and then potentially dropping a whole step below that .
