Totally agree with you, Valentine does seem like less of jam sesh and more intricately composed but doesn't matter cause the record is amazing

Totally agree with you, I've just came from a Snail Mail rabbit hole (found out about this video through a post on reddit) and I can really understand what you're saying. Now, more than ever, I just wish her a speedy recovery so that she can get back out there and figure it out the live stuff with her bandmates, I wholeheartedly believe that her third album will be a special moment in music, at least for me. Great video, btw!

I agree with you on some points, but I think in general, her music matured. You can tell she has experienced a lot more since the release of Lush, and honestly I think we all have as well, and I think that is reflected well on the album. Maybe that’s why I like it so much. I like the growth in the sound. It is absolutely distinct from the old sound, but cool and unique in a new way (the bass line on Ben Franklin is amazing, but nothing like the old sound). I agree with you on some of the live stuff being disjointed, but there are only a few to choose from since this is so new and the surgery. The live Madonna is next level though! I would argue that this is a stronger breakup album than Lush was as well. Just a hot take.) I like your take on some things, but disagree just a bit on others :)

This is also to say that I knew of Snail mail back when Lush was released because of features in the Fader and hearing things every now and then, but I just became a daily listener after I heard Valentine on Zane Lowes show and the interview with Lindsay Jordan. My taste comes from more of an alt rnb soul funk dance background and something about Valentine hit me so hard. I now have both lush and Valentine on vinyl and am absolutely obsessed with SM, they have helped my dive deeper into artist like big thief, soccer mommy, Faye Webster, and Courtney Barnett. I’ve got tickets to see them in April and I couldn’t be more excited about it! Your video is awesome, and I think you have some really great insights! My point of view, I think, just comes from a different end than yours a bit!

Hey! All good, I totally hear ya. Valentine was definitely a more mature effort, my thoughts were just coming from someone who's been listening nonstop since Lush's release lol, so your perspective makes a lot of sense. Glad Lindsey was able to introduce you to all those other great acts, they're brilliant!

@@sergescardigno okay revisiting this, because you were totally right about the new album live! Just saw them last week and while I think the show was better than what I imagined after watching their live stuff, the live stuff off of Lush definitely hit better than any of the stuff they played from Valentine. The show was awesome though seemed like they were having such a good time. I do think Lindsey’s voice is suited better for her songs on Lush live, although she belted her softer songs like light blue and that was amazing.

ive also been a big listener since lush but i could never really find myself truly clinging and relating to it- i eventually kind of fell off snail mail for a while until a bit after she released valentine , and oh my god !!! i could completely relate , i feel like we went through the exact same things , and ive been streaming the hell out of it ever since !!! i completely agree with your statement on them still figuring it out , i feel as though lindsey is also figuring herself out and it kind of goes in hand with the band ! ALSO IM SO JEALOUS OF YOUR SIGNED VINYL 💔💔💔

i agree with you. in my opinion, old snail mail felt a bit more like a kid making music with people because they want to, but now it’s transitioned into using that music for the career. ik it’s not entirely what you said tho

Valentine grew on me, and now I love it. The Snail Mail sound we initially fell in love with was driven by a Jaguar often in open D tuning which leads to a very specific sound (I see your gorgeous seafoam green, mine is candy apple red like Lindseys) you pick up a different guitar and add some synths and all of a sudden your sound is dramatically different I commend Lindsey for changing. Way too many bands go from good debut to a 2nd album that's basically a clone.

I saw a string of video uploads from a show Snail Mail did quite recently at King's Theatre in Brooklyn. They did the Valentine songs, and I actually really did enjoy the performances I saw (aside from the loud crowd next to the person filming.) Maybe it's just because I love the album, but something about this set clicked, where other Valentine song lives didn't for me.

Great video. You definitely have a sensitively adept finger on the pulse of Snail Mail. I come more to the band through Habit, though I like Lush a great deal, and in a multifarious way think that Valentine is a great "bounce back" and growth from Lush (without dumping on Lush at all). Where I agree for different reasons is about Valentine: I like the studio recording better than its songs in live performance videos and the show I saw. I like the live videos. The show I saw was excellent. Where I think the dissonance arrives from is due to Ms. Jordan's (I maintain the formal address for people I have never met socially or professionally) vocal chord surgery. This is not to say that her voice is diminished or any such negative. The fact of the matter is that it has changed and she is adjusting to her "new" voice. This is to be expected and, frankly, she is doing an incredible job in doing so, because I am sure it is no small effort. Valentine was not written and recorded with this change in mind (to my knowledge). The tunes are more complex as you rightly address, and I appreciate this layering as it is done so skillfully and enjoyably. I think what happens with the band playing live in a sound studio or on stage now, is that the instrumentation has to adjust for her "new" voice and like any change, this involves a period of transition. The clearest example, for me, is "Headlock." It is so different on the album than any performance I have witnessed (video or live), and I think it is because she cannot sing it in same manner as she did on the album (for good, medical reason) and everything and everyone in the band must adjust to this fact. It is not a put down. I think it just helps to account to the overall difference in the performance of the tunes since the release of Valentine.

Really enjoyed the video. Unfortunately, Valentine didn't really hit for me besides a couple of tracks. I was hoping she would go for a more experimental sound because she is so talented and hard working and different from other indie artists. She really takes her time with her music and I was expecting a more out there record. I guess I got my expectations set a little too high cause I was kinda disappointed with the record. She kinda went the opposite direction I wanted her to, and thats not a big deal, it's her music lol. And of course I still love LJ and will continue to support her no matter what. But when I listen to Lush and Habit it destroys me. When i listen to Valentine, im just kinda indifferent to a lot of whats going on.
