Fun facts about the second movie: in the EU, the little girl managed to escape Endor and became a reporter. The witch was indeed a nightsister from Dathomir.

Yes, but the decision for her to be one was a retroactive afterthought moment by Lucasfilm. The concept didn't exist in Star Wars when this movie came out.

Don't beat yourself up. The Ewoks films were kind of an underground sensation. I grew up with them being shown on TV... Quite ironically, the Disney channel. Then they just vanished into obscurity for several years. Eventually I came across them in the form of a DVD set. To my great shame I've actually never seen the Ewok or Droid cartoons.

Growing up as a kid in the 80s being a baby when Jedi came out, Ewoks and Droids and cameos in Muppet Babies were my only exposure to Star Wars. I knew some of the mythology and plot from Spaceballs which I saw and aired 100+ times in the late 80s. I never saw Star Wars films shown anywhere on TV. I recall one summer where NBC or a network was going to show each film Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I was hyped to watch when I remembered on Sunday. Hyped for spacejets and laser guns and to see Darth Vader. All I see in the first ten minutes is two effeminate robots bickering in the desert and knocking on a big door and talking with a big slug. I turned it off there and did something else. I didnt see the movies finally until I was 17, on the eve of Episode I. Star Wars kind of faded away and wasnt a thing between 1985-97. Kids my age grew up on He-Man, Transformers, Robocop, Terminator and Arnold for the action/adventure fix of the day.

A channel called "Secret Galaxy" covered these films yesterday. It was interesting to compare the two points of view on these films. I think the concensus that these films are just passable is not bad considering they were "made for tv". Especially when compared to that other Star Wars thing that was made for tv that we don't talk about.

@@peterhanson3472I concur. While imperfect films the prequels have plenty to love, I understand the hate, we’re seeing time repeat itself with the sequels getting crapped on. And while I can’t quite yet, I look forward to the day a bunch of kids tell me that actually rise of skywalker is underrated shut up old man… and then I can finally understand how my father felt when I told him that… ahhh… what a day that’ll be… Or not who knows, only time will tell how the sequels are viewed. But as a kid who grew up with them, it’s good to see the prequels get some much deserved love.

@@peterhanson3472 a show that does for the sequels what clone wars did for the prequels would rock. I don't want to hold my breath because I feel the circumstances of star wars as a popular IP is very different, at the time you could do whatever with star wars because it was in this strange stagnant spot, so the clone wars was born. now under the thumb of Disney eh... we'll see. again, time will tell. The witches of Dathomir originally debuted in a book that came out after this second movie movie was made, but they later retconned the villain of the movie to be a Dathomir witch, specifically a Nightsister, and retroactively made her the first appearance of a Nightsister and Dathomir witch in Star Wars. In the Book of Sith-a collection of manuscripts by various darksiders-Mother Talzin describes how a rogue Nightsister stole their clan’s only raven-form Talisman of Shapeshifting, an allusion to the villain of this movie.

I played one in the Star Trek Roleplaying Game years back. I think the game technically didn't allow for Ewoks to be force sensitive, but my GM handwaved that. (Hell, I'm pretty sure the Ewok shaman in these movies is seen using the Force a few times, including in one of the clips Doug showed.)

I've never even heard of these movies until now, but my introduction to Star Wars WAS the Ewoks cartoon, although I didn't know anything about Star Wars proper at that time. My first TRUE introduction to the franchise was Lego Star Wars that came out as a promotion to the Phantom Menace. I didn't see the movie in the theaters, but my auntie bought it as soon as it came on VHS, and that's when I first saw it. When I later read the visual guide of the original trilogy in my school, I saw the page about the Ewoks, then I thought: "That's where those teddy bears came from?". The first time I saw the original trilogy, though, was through the DVD release. About these Ewok movies, I kinda like the way Doug compared the witch to the Night Sisters of Dathomir. I would totally buy that connection, if her skin was more pale, and her magic was more specifically connected to the Dark Side of the Force. But this was long before George Lucas came up with more Dark Side users beyond the Sith. The other villains look like space pirates. In both the Expanded Universe, and the Disney canon, the space pirates have been established the scourge of the Galaxy. During the Old Republic, it was the Jedi who kept these pirates in check. During the Empire, piracy increased, and the Imperial Navy was too busy with the Rebellion to deal with pirates.

I only saw Battle for Endor. It was traumatic, but in a good way. Alot of 80s films, TV movies and even some shows would have some grim, bleak or terrifying bits in them, despite being for children. I saw Star Wars first, but watching BoE, it reminded me and felt more like a Willow movie. Almost sword and sorcery, rather than tech and force. It didn't really bother me then and now, its all isolated to endor but it was something that even now, I cannot help but draw parallels between them.

That makes no sense because the numbers aren't tied to the movie in any way whatsoever, it's not like there actually are 29 Ewoks in the movie, nor 10 mansions in Haunted Mansion, so you just have to say any element at random from each movie with no thought whasoever: Ewoks, super spies, abusive families, ancient kingdoms... and then add the number before it. In fact having the colon after the number makes it even worse, it just looks like a grocery list, not the verses in a song . This is not fun, funny or clever in any way, it's pointless, annoying and stupid.

I grew up loving both these movies; my grandmother recorded the first one off TV and I would always rent the BATTLE FOR ENDOR one all the time. The first one was always intended to be a "Fairy Tale" (considering Burl Ives, Sam The Snowman himself, is narrating). However, after reading GEORGE LUCAS: A BIOGRAPHY by Brian Jay Jones, he revealed the Ewok movies were made largely because his daughter Amanda LOVED them (even asking Warwick Davis to come to her birthday party dressed as Wicket the Ewok). Around the time the first one was being made, she also became a big fan of HEIDI, so Lucas decided he needed to make the sequel as a "HEIDI kind of story"............which resulted in that DARK opening; I'm amazed to this day how they got away with that (although the sequel did get a "Parental Guidance Warning" when it aired). The first film was directed by Lucas' college friend, John Korty (who'd just won an Emmy for AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JANE PITTMAN) and when he wasn't available for the sequel, he hired Ken and Jim Wheat to write and direct it, and given they wrote one of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET sequels right after, it's no wonder how dark this got.
