@uponreflection i am also planning to stay. thinking about getting a 180 days visa, re-entering on the last few days so i can get another 60 days, then extend by another 30 days, which makes it 180+60+30 days (9 month) then i need to be out of Thailand for 3 month. then rinse & repeat. how do you managed to stay there for 2 years?

@@ayebo15 Not everyone’s choice apparently due to cost I personally think it was money well spent I invested in the Thai elite visa

It clicked the first time I visited Chiang Mai back in 1993. Stayed at Top North Guest House. Was working for the fire service back in the USA at the time, had 7 years to retirement, so kept visiting 'till I retired in 2000. Been going back every year for the last 23 years (minus time for covid). Returned to the US from CM in April for 7 months, then will head back in November. That area around Top North Guest House hasn't changed since back in 1993 & that is a good thing.

I first visited Chiang Mai in 1993 too and also stayed at Top North. And as you say the area hasn't changed.

I visited Thailand in Dec 2022, fell in love with the country. Trying to figure out how to migrate and make it work, I'm close, but your video is probably my version of "the moment" when I remember the trigger. Thanks mate, will let you know when I get there, and buy you a beer.

2014 after my second trip to Asia I decided to commit to being location independent so that I could entertain locating in Asia...which happened in 2018. Now I enjoy being in the warmer climes of the Philippines and am very glad to be here 🙂

That's my favorite soi as well...so much so that I have it as my screen saver for the past four years! But I wish you wouldn't share it around, please! I like the quieter vibe as tourists really hadn't discovered it before. (sigh) You'd best keep your current gig, mate, cuz' you'd make a lousy spy with spilling all the best secrets!!! For the record, I recorded my BEST live video at the end of that soi one quiet Sunday morning, really channelling full-on Anthony Bourdain and chatting for over an hour with locals I met that morning. One of my fondest memories right there.

Bro this happened to me in 2019. I was in Phuket and was drinking and chatted with this Australian dude name David. And he said he did the same thing online work for a stock brokerage. works 8 months in thailand and goes home for 4 to see his family and friends. Then in 2019 I started into stocks with the goal to make 200k and retire in thailand. Sadly Covid hit allong with other personal matter. Now i just travel to asia and south america. coming home for a bit to see family and friends. I owe that dude for opening my myset.

Great informative video Brett you made me laugh when you said how good those bars were back in the day. I thought you'd gone back to the UK seemingly about the weather in Thailand being not so good. I'm still in the UK in my motorhome. Summer here now just starting I hope. Can't face another winter though I don't think. I need to get planning. Take care my friend.

Moon Muang is a great spot. That is the first place I stayed in CM on my first visit in the early 90s - in Top North Guesthouse. It hasn't changed much, still a little oasis.

Also my favourite place in the old town. Big up Nuts Bar! A great owner and a great place to play pool and hang out

Went down moonmuang soi 1 plenty of times… but mostly for the reason to get to Pineapple Express bar/dispensary! Literally the fucking best experience to meet locals! Have a brew get a game of pool in while smoke a doobie. Great environment to just immerse yourself in. The small dinky alley ways are absolute stellar! Really makes the entire experience feel like a small town feel. Some regulars slide through and as well as farangs and expats living there. I even was there when they had a few Thai police officers there on break playing a game of pool. It’s was Lw surreal! Meanwhile I’m getting lit 😂

I click so fast when I see one of your new vids; largely for the injection of positivity. But also to give me the often needed wake up slap. The first time I realized location independence might be feasible was when, working a freelance job from home, I made more money in one day at home, than I would have in a day at the office. I thought " if I can do this at home, couldn't I do it back home in Guyana?" (but I got distracted and didn't follow through at the time)

Hi Brett first time seeing a video of CU Corner in Soi1. Went there on a Friday night & was a great evening. Have a US friend in a wheelchair who stays at Srithana Condo2 who loves the bar... An old chinese guy was also playing but good vibes.I used to run an expat mag called ChiangMai Trader News 20 years ago & last trip met 2 old friends in Nicks Mad Dog. UK Nick since given it to his head girl??? but one of my haunts when back in CM........also Sandy at the Irish I heard is still there.....

Hi Brett! Interesting video! Not sure if you shared this before but I'm just curious: How did you manage to stay in Thailand for a longer period of time? What Visa do you have? I know a lot of people have difficulties with Visas.

😢😢😢 this was the exact area I stayed at when I visited CM. Stayed about 5-10 mins walk away from that area on the south east corner of the moat. I only stayed for 4days but really started to get familiarized with the area. Shot felt like a second home and started getting in the routine of going to that exact night market before heading home 😩 best $3 spent there! Milkshakes for days! And as well as the soups and roti! Was damn near in heaven and can’t wait to go back! When I do visit again thought wanted to make time to explore pai, chiang rai and tachliek in Myanmar… can’t wait to retire out there! I wanted to go forth with purchasing a condo in CM over these next few years. Decided to rather go with purchasing a condo rather then getting a new genesis g80 cause why not! Already have a car that I got on big discount (due to covid) and would rather have a vacation/retirement spot instead. And I only 26 rn 💀
