In the last couple decades, Excursion Parks (for Disney, I believe that's simply the Castle parks + Tokyo DisneySea) have proven to be, by far, the most successful and popular type of theme park. Enthusiasts like us love our Discovery Parks and Animal Parks and such, and we love them having a strong identity - but Disney has decided people don't want that (and to an extent I think they're correct). So they try to make Epcot and Animal Kingdom and their Studios parks more like Excursion Parks with each update, and I think that's why you get that weird mishmash identity crisis feeling with these parks (in addition to economy and efficiency as you already mentioned).

As someone who grew up with Disneyland Paris I always feel so sad that it get's almost completely ignored by Disney. Whilst the other parks get these great big expansions and new rides, we got nothing. Now they're starting to give us things, but they still refuse to go all out. Is it because they have to pay most of it themselves and not get helped by big companies? Or do they just not care? The new Cars tram tour is an embarrassment, the same critique as with the Fast and Furious ride in Universal count here: "A movie about fast cars and racing? Let's do a slow tram tour!". I'd rather they shut the tram tour completely (I know it's to keep some capacity, but still)

I most definitely hope this will bring great things to DLP. However, it all feels like it's not enough. When Avengers Campus and Arendelle: World of Frozen have opened, what do we actually have? One additional ride. One. (Rock 'n Rollercoaster > Iron Man coaster, Armageddon > Spider-Man WEB slingers, + the Frozen darkride.) I really don't get why Disney doesn't immediately build the sled ride for Frozen at Hong Kong (I believe), as they could incorporate that into the same building as the darkride. What's more concerning is happening next door, though. Disneyland Paris Park hasn't had a new addition (note that I don't say "replacement") to the park since Space Mountain in 1995! Again, 1995! That's insane! Especially when you consider no new ride additions have been announced and probably won't until Frozen at WDS is done in 2024! That would be almost 30 years! While WDS certainly needs expanding, and work should continue with that Marvel Quinjet darkride, Star Wars land, and a proper Cars land, actual Disneyland Paris needs to get new rides ASAP! There's a bunch of expansion plots ready to go. Adventureland should finally get the Indiana Jones darkride. Discoveryland should get Fire Mountain (to compete with Phantasialand's FLY), TRON coaster, and/or Tokyo DisneySea's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Fantasyland should get a venue for Philharmagic (it is really out of place in Discoveryland), maybe a Pooh darkride, Beauty and the Beast darkride and/or Seven Dwarves Mine Train. Replace the Wonderland maze and Storybook boatride if you must! Frontierland should get a version of Splash Mountain, the notion of "DLP shouldn't get water rides as it can freeze one day a year in France" is absolute BS. To end on a positive note. It is encouraging to see that Disney is planning an additional hotel, a refurbishment of Disney Village and is using the ground dug up for the WDS lake as a berm at the far side of the resort. The location that could be the home of a third gate, which they are contractually obligated to build around 2030...

The wonderland maze adds an unique and exploratory touch to the park though. It shouldn’t be removed imo.
@EspenSGX
@EspenSGX 3 жыл бұрын
@@MattGarcia I rather not remove attractions at all. The reason I mention a possible replacement of the maze is because of the current firework logistics, which are set off behind that part of the park and even causes the Casey Jr./Storybook boat ride to close well before the rest of the park. If that could be moved further back or something it could make more room for a Fantasyland expansion. Personally I think it really needs it. I was really disappointed by that part of the park. It didn't impress me at all. Except for the castle, of course. When I went through the castle my thought was "Wait, I'm already at the back of the park?". Of course it could be because I'm used to something like the Efteling, which just goes on and on. Basically, I just want more park in all directions.

If they directly continue with that Quinjet darkride for Avengers Campus, build Galaxy's Edge with Rise of the Resistance and put Radiator Springs Racers in the spot of what is now Cars Road Trip, we would have a quite attractive park. Even after building Shanghai Disneyland with an increased emphasis on tailoring the experience to the culture it seems they’ve learnt nothing from this and Walt Disney Studios is going to get more tired, simplified rehashes of other park’s attractions. Really not sure how I feel about Disney’s move to just building entire lands or mini-lands themed around 1 IP with only 1 or 2 attractions in. It seems like a really uneconomical use of space. It also makes it more difficult if they want to refresh the park in the future as it ties them to that IP unless they want to retheme the entire section again.
@PHLFANJAN
@PHLFANJAN 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Disney is absolutely driving short sighted here. They love the IPs for the quick money, but what do they do with those lands in 20-30 years? Original Disney theme park concepts have always been timeless and were not tied too heavily to IP's. Now the are building entire lands based on a single IP. This will backfire big time, but Chapek and his goons will be retired by then, so why care?

TBH the Disneyland Paris Parc is goregous, and it makes me sad to think that the ast addition to the park was Space Mountain, (lets be honest, Astro Blaster was just a replacement, capacity improving, attraction completely missing the mark with the Jules Verne theme, until Disney can deliver something original as good as the original park was designed, there are plenty better parks in Europe to spend your money at!

Other parks (Efteling, Phantasialand, Europa Park, etc.) are opening new rides consistently, can compete in theming, are even cheaper, and I haven't been to them all. An event season or new show won't get me back. And if I want a new shot of Disney I rather save up and go straight to Walt Disney World or maybe even Tokyo Disneyland/DisneySea. Been off the internet for a week. I just got here and am depressed to see so few hits and likes. This is another absolutely brilliant piece, well researched and perhaps even more fair to Disney than they deserve, but definitely fair. Sometimes I feel the best journalists get the lowest reward, but the clickbait channels collect all the accolades. UPVOTE ALREADY otherwise we may not see these anymore.

Star Tours already is in Disneyland Park's Discoveryland and no way they are going to move all that over. The Aladdin carpets haven't even been moved to Adventureland, let alone moving multiple military grade flight simulators. Best we can hope for is a version of Smugglers Run. Maybe an X-Wing, going with the concept art. The cooperation and instructions given in SR aren't going to work with groups of strangers, because of the many languages they have to cater for.

You can't really do the same thing as in the Americans parks in Disneyland Paris. There are too many languages to cater for. They could do the 50/50 thing and have everything French/English, but how are you going to do something like the Millennium Falcon ride and its instructions? They don't even give you a clear option at Star Tours to do the English version over the French one. You have to be lucky or know that you can ask a cast member to start it instead. If they are cooperative, that is. Walkaround characters would need to be fluent in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and probably Dutch (which I believe make up for 10% of visitors). It's going to be near impossible to find a girl who looks like Rey and speaks multiple of these languages. No, they should bank on theming for immersion.

@@JordisYoutubing I really don't get Disney's issue with language barrier in Paris. Remove the French pilot chatter in Hyperspace Mountain and it'll be a better ride for it. The original didn't have someone shouting in your ears and was great (and should return). I really don't get why a Tower of Terror or Star Tours doesn't have queues based on language. Line up here for French, or here for English. It's that simple, and they actually originally did that with the Studio Tram Tour. You could do the same with a Smugglers Run, as that ride also has multiple ride rooms.

What a terrible idea to add a lake of that size with only one land (and one ride) on the other side. Since Star Wars land is in flux, they should cut their losses, create a water amphitheater similar to Fantasmic at DHS instead of a huge lake, and squeeze Frozen into the area behind Tower of Terror. Maybe the leftover investment might just be enough to bring Alien Swirling Saucers to Toy Story Playland and, you know, actually ADD something to the attractions roster! I honestly cannot comprehend how THIS is going to cost $2.5 billion.
@EspenSGX
@EspenSGX 3 жыл бұрын
The lake probably will host something akin to Fantasmic at Tokyo DisneySea. Currently the park doesn't have a nighttime spectacular at all, except for certain seasons and events. But those often are just mapping a bunch of Star Wars scenes on the Tower of Terror. We can only hope additional lands will come in ASAP. But to indeed avoid a even more empty looking park they need to keep on building. It also looks like the €2 billion investment won't just encompass the three lands in the park, but also the refurb for Hotel New York, a refurb for Disney Village, an event center, a new hotel and the curious construction of a berm on the far side of the resort.

The only thing I like about this expansion is that it just proves that the Tower of Terror and Avengers Campus can exist in the same park. They REALLY didn't have to replace the Tower of Terror in DCA just to be in a hurry of having a Marvel ride cause they wanna show off their IPs. That aside, only excited (I guess) for Avengers Campus (although tbh, what's an Avengers Campus even doing in a studios park???) The Frozen area is whatever... The Star Wars area? Honestly they're better off coming up with a a different theme cause Star Wars is not in a good spot after the disaster that was the sequel trilogy, no one really wants to be reminded of that, more so if it's gonna be set in the sequel trilogy. Anything's better than Star Wars by this point.

I have a love-hate relationship with the Disneyland Paris Resort. I love the Disneyland Park and hated most of the Studio Park. The Studio Park always felt like it was done on the cheap. It was not well thought out and it seems like it was built because Disney felt it had to build a second park. Unlike the Disneyland Parks around the world and even the other secondary parks in Florida, Japan and even Anaheim, it seems like no one was put in charge of making it a cohesive park at the Paris Resort. They really need to do what Disney did with DCA and come up with some type of overarching theme and story behind the park. And while DCA still has a long way to go, it is 99% better than it was when it opened and 1000 times better than Paris' Studio Park.

That has a lot of nothing space and already an aeronautic theme thanks to its zappelin. As to why I actually don't want Soaring across the berm where Pizza Planet once was is that I think that would be an ideal spot for the TRON coaster. I'm honestly not impressed by this expansion. Sure for locals it means they can go to Frozenland without going to Hong Kong and to Avengers Campus, and potentially later Radiator Springs and discount Galaxy's Edge without needing to go to California, and it certainly benefits the company to save money on parts and R&D with having the same land in 2 or 3 parks, but this just continues the homogenisation of Disney. Each new expansion to one of the parks seems to reduce the unique experiences each one has, with Shanghai having quite literally one ride that's unique to it which cannot be experienced at Walt Disney World. At this rate I wouldn't be shocked if there's an actual goal within the company to make DisneyLand aimed entirely at the local California market, Shanghai at the domestic Chinese market, Paris at the families not willing to take a flight to Florida, and WDW being the only one aimed at being what we've come to expect a Disney resort to be. I wouldn't be shocked if eventually nothing an be found in any of the other parks that can't be found in WDW.

Well, not a lot of Europeans are willing to go to Florida for Walt Disney World. They are much more inclined to go to Disneyland Paris or one of the other parks (Efteling, Phantasialand, Europa Park, etc.) that can (easily) compete with Disneyland Paris in theming and rides. Bringing over rides from Florida and beyond would be a good move. Especially as the resort needs additions ASAP. This doesn't mean original rides should be abandoned, though. Not that I want to go into it much, but there's also the incentive to reduce air travel for the environment. Definitely agree that a single completely unique land would have been a much bigger draw to get people to visit the Paris resort! Maybe the logic is just that they need to provide a compelling reason for EU visitors to spend overnights when they're visiting, and that they finally believe the Paris resort is worth real investment in order to make that happen. If so, these mostly copy-and-paste versions of successful lands from better parks will probably do the job.
