Lisa Montgomery was the first woman to be executed by the federal government in America for nearly 70 years.
The 52-year-old strangled pregnant 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett, before cutting out and kidnapping her baby in Missouri in 2004. The child survived and was returned to Stinnett's family.
Her lawyers argued that she had been born brain-damaged and was too mentally ill to be executed. Family members say that as a child she was routinely sexually and physically abused by her father, and trafficked by her mother.

According to some articles written at the time of her execution, the brother of her father, Zeb, who brought her up after Bobbie Jo's murder (and I guess, technically her brief abduction) said she's doing well and Zeb was raising her well. He also said that she found closure in her execution in 2020, when I guess she would've been 15 or 16. I don't get why when adoption (and from birth) is an option, Lisa Montgomery ever chose to go the incredibly horrific route she did. I also just don't understand, in the first place, how you could possibly do that not just to another human being, but then to their child, while somehow deluding yourself that you can ever be its loving or caring mother after having done so. It's mind boggling, truly.

I think every one agrees the murder was horrible. However, it's been shown over and over that the threat of the death penalty does not reduce murder rates. Unless someone is hoping for death by cop, most murderers, most prisoners even, think they will get away with it. The penalty doesn't matter because they aren't planning to get caught. And, in fact, there is a 30 - 40% chance that a murderer will remain free, because so many go unsolved. All the death penalty does is affirm that killing is ok if you have a good enough reason and the power to do it, it does not lead to a more peaceful society.

I'm not in any way excusing her actions, and of course not every victim of abuse go on to be killers but there does seem to be some correlation between victims of abuse being more likely than the rest of the population to go on to inflict harm on others. Eg, 50℅ of serial killers have were themselves victims of psychological/emotional abuse, whereas for the general population, it's 2%. Like I said though, this isn't an excuse, but it at least could be part of an explanation as to why some people turn out this way...

Not making an excuse and not trying to justify any of her actions. But just another perspective, I think researching and planning what she did does show some sort of mental illness. I'm not defending her in any way...I'm just trying to understand how such things can happen.

I was getting sober in late 2004 when this story hit Time magazine. In my throws of withdraw and aching pains I read the article. It gave me nitemares and horrifying visions. It also sent a message to my brain that there is always someone out there that has it a lot worse that didn't deserve it. Bobbi wasn't an addict. Bobbi didn't steal. Bobbi didn't cheat or lie. She was an innocent victim. I was not. I brought on my own demons and pain. I deserved death if anyone ever did. Here I am in 2021. 16 years sober. I doubt anyone comes in to this world as “pure evil”. That is a simple explanation of a complicated and tragic story made by ignorant people who are not able to hold 2 opposing thoughts in their minds at one time. Would it be too difficult to acknowledge that perhaps Lisa Montgomery was so badly damaged by the horrendous abuse she apparently suffered from the 2 people who were supposed to love and protect her, that she too grew up to perform a heinous and horrific act on another human being? It makes sense to me. Monkey see, monkey do. Do you honestly think that Lisa Montgomery had any chance whatsoever to be normal? Or to live a normal life? Hell no! But that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have to take responsibility for what she did and be sentenced for it. It simply means we can have compassion and understanding for a person and the shitty life they had, and be repulsed and horrified by what they did.

I live in Missouri and my recollection of this story is clear. She planned, she executed, she fled. She knew she had to educate herself, she knew she had to flee because she would be in trouble..how much more responsible and deliberate do you get? But because she is about to reap what she has sown, her defense is she didn't know what she was doing was somehow wrong. I also love how her family supposedly steps up to confirm she was sexually and physically abused as a child... if they all knew and did nothing they should be held accountable for allowing it to continue. I cannot judge her heart but I can say even children know there are consequences for your actions.

Like making sure children are removed from abusive homes, and given the loving care they need in their formative years? An ounce of prevention is worth more than a ton of cure! There's no doubt Lisa was a very damaged adult, to have been capable of such an horrific crime. And motive is all - she killed a pregnant woman, to steal her baby. Why did child support service remove one daughter for neglect and leave Lisa there unwatched for years to suffer so much heinous abuse. Why weren’t both them taken away. It’s a pity the sister who was taken away didn’t have the strength to speak out and get her sister out of the home too. However I understand it takes years for children to speak out about sexual abuse. Probably why Lisa herself didn’t bring it up at the trial. It was probably at therapist working with her on death row that delved into her childhood trauma. I feel she was let down by her parents, the state and the justice system putting her to death. She needed psychiatric help and confinement. It hard to rehabilitate a person from such childhood trauma that becomes abusive in adult life as their way of coping. Husbands that end up murdering their pregnant wives etc don’t see too many of them sitting on death row they seem to get diminished responsibility or crime of passion. It’s hard to understand why Lisa did what she did it seems so bizarre to even try comprehend. We need to understand more that what children experience as a young child has huge implications in adult life. It’s a really sad story that highlights many failures in the system.

@Bailey Gibbons it’s actually heartbreaking this story as yours and many others. I didn’t thankfully have it as a child but as an adult twice with a boyfriend and in a terribly toxic marriage. They guy I married was adopted at 3 from a Notorious orphanage run by nuns, and then later over indulged by adoptive parents that neglected his anger issues I didn’t see until we were married. So my story a bit different but since overcoming the abuse I can now recognize the damage it does later in life and how hard it is for victims to speak out. I too never said anything about the boyfriend who raped me we were together 7 years from 14-19 on and off for 2 yrs before it happened. I was still a virgin had had a bike accident on crutches in a cast. It was the last time I ever saw him and I blamed myself a lot even though it was more a broken trust and I had said no more than once. It took a long time to trust anyone and then it was falling for the too good to be true. Now I see why I was so naive and vulnerable later on I can understand it all a bit better. It’s definitely made me more compassionate to people that either end up in abusive situations or end up in crime. There needs to be better understanding of how much the treatment you receive or don’t receive as a child effects you later in life. I think it should be a subject in school on what’s a toxic relationship and how to recognize it, plus how it isn’t your fault!

I do understand the abuse she suffered, however what got to me is the fact that she planned and study how to do Caesarean section to the victim, to take out the child from her, do you know what a painful procedure that is ,that’s why it’s done in hospital with general anesthesia. This perpetrator did it so raw, the abuse she suffered is much less as what she did to this victim.that is bloody raw, tremendously evil. There’s a lot of abuse people out there, but don’t do a crime like this to cut open a woman and take out their baby from their womb. That’s the real crime heavy one, that is why she got the death penalty. Just to imagine a raw C-S is beyond anybody’s comprehension.

All you people who have shown sympathy for Lisa Montgomery have shown no sympathy for Bobbi Jo's mother, her daughter or friends and family. It is a point of view for those who want to comprehend the type of evil behind a cold, mentally I'll murderer. You want to see people crying for the victim, while bashing the killer? you've got the entire internet to do so. I would also like to point out that nearly everyone is the victim in this story, which includes Lisa Montogmery because obviously no child deserves to be raped. NONE.
