The Execution Of The German General Of The Devils Division

At the end of World War 2, there were a number of German Generals who were executed for war crimes. One of those was Fritz Neidholdt, who was the ruthless commander of the Devils Division. His soldiers conducted raids against Partisan forces and were known for their terror and brutality against their enemy. But Neidholdt was sentenced to death and he was executed by a firing squad.

The Wehrmacht (Pronounced veermakht) was not the army, it was the entire armed forces of Nazi Germany. It replaced the term Reichswehr (Reich Defence). Wehrmacht included the army (Heer), Navy (Kreigsmarine) and air force (Luftwaffe).

Former Jugoslavia must have been a truly savage place in WW2. Possibly Neidholdt had some redeeming features that we are unaware of, otherwise surely he would have been strung up. The hand of Tito may have been involved - we will never know.
