I'm sure you know, but the alignment as well as the two shafts being plumb to each other could cause the issues you've shown here, even if the pulleys were in good shape. Brought this up because it looks like the motor is not in good alignment with the fan shaft.

Putting some wax on the belt and the squeeling stops, it's the belt/pulley. If it stays it's the bearings. Not a hvac guy but it helped my alternator belt for some time.

I think you can do the same thing with a few drops of water - if the squeaking goes away, it's the belt. If it doesn't, it's the bearings. And the water evaporates in a few minutes and doesn't leave wax behind after.

Two things with multiple belt systems, and maybe you touched on it and I missed it. One, they need to be a matched set and they come tied together. Not just two random of the same brand. Those first two replacements were definitely not matched nor even the same. So no good there, but you took them off. Two, with a double adjustable pulley, how do you verify that the two pulleys are exactly set the same? Counting the original turns, is just setting it back to what it was before and it worn unevenly before. If those the pulleys are not exactly the same, they belts will be driven at different rates, cause wear and can lead to the squeaking. How would you verify they are both set the same? Amp check with one belt on at a time? RPM check with one belt at a time? I think you get where I am going and this unit did have a problem with belt noise. That one, more worn pulley could indicate the double pulley was not matched between them and it caused one to wear more, in order to try and even out itself. I am sure you can spend a day getting it exact and even being off it's not like it will grenade tomorrow. It will take time to develop problems again. Anyway..... Cheers!

CHRIS what if they converted these drive pulleys and belts to the cogged toothed timing belt type used on cars?They last a very long time,no slippage. I wish i could develop a retrofit kit and let it be tried under trial use and see if theres an advantage. Hey i know these keep you making money though the way they are. I know theres direct drive,but i say keep belts but use a timing belt type and pulleys.

The notched belts are always a problem, they are noisy. Equally, adjustable sheaves (no pulleys) are an issue as they have uneven surface (they are intended to be used to do a preliminary set and then replaced with fixed). A screwdriver on the bearing and to your ear will tell you if those are bad and a motor typically makes a lot more noise unloaded if the bearing is bad vs loaded (and how long the sheave keeps moving tells you how worn as worn runs a long long time - and no, bad bearings only make nasty noises just before seize up, with less grease and wear they coast along on the bare balls, grease slows down the motor)
@UberArchangel

Cmon man do you not own a screwdriver. ;P That is your mechanics stethoscope. You push the tip of the screwdriver against the housing for the bearing and you put your ear on the other end. No I am not trolling you. Try it. It works best when close to the housing of what you are listening too. It works really good against mounting bolts normally. You can use it to listen to all kinds of stuff. FYI that glazing needs to be removed normally. Use sand paper or scotchbrite and wrap it around a screwdriver. Zip tie it on and while running use it to clean off the glazing. Screwdriver keeps the fingers away were something to catch. This method scotchbrite normally works better. Now I would recommend using the mechanics stethoscope and start listening to things before and after you replace them. It will give you an express diagnostic ability. You can also rest your fingernail edge against the screwdriver without the rest of the finger touching. The vibration will be channeled through the fingernail. I am a big rig mechanic for over 13 yrs now.

As for the alignment of pulleys. Look into an analog driveline angle tool for big rigs. If the angles are the same on both pullies and the belts look level should be good to go. An example of what I am talking about is Speedway Motors DECO Magnetic Angle Finder Gauge Tool, 4.14 In. Diameter.

3:15 - I can't criticize you at all for that. Grease is a real pain to clean up, and if you get it on your clothes and it gets in the washing machine, you'll never hear the end of it! Happy wife, happy life! 14:31 - I was actually in disbelief that you'd leave the two different belts on there - right up until the scene change where you said you went back and matched them. Then the world went back to "normal." 🤣 Two slightly-different belts can cause one belt to "fight" against the other. I assume that would lead to future pulley/sheave wear or uneven belt wear.

@jordanhenshaw
@jordanhenshaw Жыл бұрын
Oh he actually addresses this later in the sit down. OK, so if the problem is not being able to find the right motor on a late Friday night, and if you’re using the manufacturers that use generic motors, wouldn’t you still have the exact same problem if a belt-style motor broke on a Friday night? The only difference with a direct-style system (vfd? Variable frequency drive?) is that you’re eliminating possible points of failure. The belt can’t break because it doesn’t exist. The pulleys can’t break because they don’t exist. The only thing left to break is the motor and you’ll have the same level of difficulty finding one of those on Friday night either way unless you’re going with the greedy manufacturers. No? EDIT: ok, so the premise that the generic vfd’s are stocked locally like the belt ones is false. Gotcha.

A solid bar can be useful if the situation permits it to be done safely. Even a big screw driver. Tip on the thing you want to hear, handle pressing in ear or on your skull (really). I used to do this to hear how stepper motors were performing. I could hear bearing rumble and even pick the step speed / acceleration. In my IT days it would even let me hear the actuator in a voice coil type hard disk to see if there was any abnormal sounds. Very useful in a pinch. Again, only done if safe.

With an adjustable dual belt pulley, close enough is all you will ever get, as when you adjust it, the belts move apart or together. More than good enough for those low speed units. With high speed belt drives you even need to dial in the taper lock pulleys with an indicator to make them vibration free at 5,000 rpm.
