This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact kzbin.infoUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

The Fellow Atmos canister, due to its vacuum will pull CO2 out of the coffee beans and other absorbed/dissolved gasses within the beans. This is normal. It happens with most negative pressure food storage containers but is more noticeable on the non-displacement containers
@michaelarighi52682 жыл бұрын
And, with coffee beans, the CO2 offgassing is a well-enough known phenomenon that coffee bags in the retail market have a special one-way valve on them, specifically to allow that offgassing to occur without rupturing the bags.
@dominiccummings18932 жыл бұрын
@@michaelarighi5268 I was just about to say this! James Hoffmann addressed it in his comparison of coffee containers.
@Koofteh2 жыл бұрын
I thought it was fresh beans off-gassing which releases the vacuum. But I tried it with super stale beans I had left out and it still loses the seal within 24 hours... this is with me twisting the pump until I can't twist anymore. Even if it's beans off-gassing, it makes this product totally useless. It does not hold a seal for more than half a day. It fails at the one job it is designed to do. AirScape is probably a much better use of your $40.
@jelteklaswijnja40552 жыл бұрын
@@Koofteh The point is *not* actually to make it vacuum; the point is to remove as much oxygen as possible. As the CO2 off-gassing from the coffee won't negatively affect the quality of the beans, it's fine that it loses it's vacuum as long as it does not allow oxygen into the canister.

I have always assumed that the Atmos looses its seal because the beans degas CO2 so, for its purpose, there's no air in the container to affect the beans… and the beans stay fresh. I should test the theory by sealing an empty Atmos.
@jonathanfaber81132 жыл бұрын
The Atmos will still lose its seal even if empty. I returned mine as I found they don't hold a seal for very long at all and didn't really live up to the marketing claims from Fellow.

@@jonathanfaber8113 I tested mine and it keeps the seal when empty. I am more than ever convinced that it is CO2. Especially because I witness the same behaviour with my weck glass jar (like Masson but EU brand). However I recently ordered a second Atmos and it was failing to achieve a proper seal. Cheap life hack for anyone who wants the Ember mug but can't splurge on it right now or can't justify it: get yourself a candle warmer. They're like $8 CAD from Michaels (maybe less at other places? I dunno) but you can plop a mug on there and it'll keep it nice and warm. If the liquid to mug ratio is low enough it'll even re-heat your drink for you, but it'll take a while. Down-side is: since it's non-programmable, it just keeps heating your mug, and the heat only comes from the bottom of your mug, so you gotta keep an eye on it. I've legit left a mug of coffee on there long enough and completely forgotten about it that it all evaporated and dried out.

They have done tests on those "vacuum seal" products, and they don't do much because it is SO far away from a real vacuum. Protecting the inside from "new" air is important, of course, but that doesn't require the slight vacuum, just a tight seal. Which perhaps this does.

I made a fitted insert for it that holds my Fellow ekg, a French press, a milk frothing wond, my 1zpresso KPlus, an aeropress, and a mokapot all security looked in place. I want to make a coffee storage suggestion. Based on my education and experience as a chemist, I highly doubt that any of the air evacuation/minimization storage products sold for home use can remove enough oxygen to significantly retard staling. Based both on that chemical education and on direct experience storing my own coffee, I suggest the most effective thing a typical home coffee maker can do to retard staling is storing the coffee in a freezer. My coffee comes in those laminated bags with an aluminum layer in the lamination and a wire fold keeper. I put the bag, unopened, in the freezer as soon as I get it home. Then, after opening the bag for first and subsequent uses, I fold it tightly closed, secure the folds with the keeper and put it back in the freezer. This suffices to minimize staling for the usual two week life of a pound of coffee in my kitchen. I know from experience that it will not suffice for a month after opening a bag. After a month, I can taste the staling. If you’ve got a deep freeze handy, probably all the better, but an ordinary kitchen freezer seems good enough for two weeks past opening. If your coffee comes in more environmentally friendly, but more permeable bags, you may want to find a more impermeable container, but first I’d just try it with the bag it comes in to see how well it works. I am aware that lots of coffee advice says storing your coffee in a freezer will ruin it. Both my education and direct experience call this advice into question. I suggest you try it for yourself.
@davidfuller5812 жыл бұрын
Thawing and refreezing it is less than ideal - it creates condensation on the beans, which is... not great, to say the least. Better to freeze until you're ready to use it, and then let it thaw slowly (like, overnight before you need it). Resealable bags are also a better choice than those aluminum bag closer things.
@markholm70502 жыл бұрын
@@davidfuller581 For me, storing in the freezer has produced slower staling, as judged by my taste buds, than storing at room temp. I never have the beans out long enough for them to thaw. It’s true they may pick up a bit of condensation, but they are never noticeably damp after I weigh out the portion I intend to use. In fact, I sometimes dampen them slightly before grinding to keep down static cling, a trick I learned from James Hoffmann. The fact that I get static cling unless I add a bit of water is pretty good evidence they haven’t collected much condensation during freezer storage and use. (One N or two on the end of his name?) Do your own research is a common bit of advice these days. I don’t approve of trying to do your own medical research. It’s too complex a field. But I think trying different coffee storage methods is something one can do. For me, the freezer is better than room temp.
@davidfuller5812 жыл бұрын
@@markholm7050 I agree, I keep my coffee in the freezer until I'm ready to use it. It keeps longer that way, which is always nice. I just don't keep it in the freezer after I open it - I don't want my coffee getting freezerburn nor do I want it picking up smells from the other stuff in my freezer. There's some idea that frozen beans make more fines but I'm not sure I believe that it makes any difference.
@markholm70502 жыл бұрын
@@davidfuller581 Freezer burn refers mostly to dehydration that happens with temperature cycling in an ordinary freezer. To dehydrate, a frozen product has to contain significant water to start with. If the product is already dry, it can’t dry out much more. Coffee roasting heats the beans well above the boiling point of water while blowing air through them. There can’t be much water left in them. With other foods that I have definitely freezer burned in my freezer, I have seen the water that has migrated out of the food as ice crystals separate from the food but still inside the packaging. I have never seen that with coffee.

The Fellow Joey seems better-suited to being placed under a bottomless portafilter, since there's only (usually) a single stream straight-down the middle; therefore, the opening doesn't have to be as wide. As far as the Atmos losing its seal goes, mine only does this when the coffee is most fresh and is doing the most off-gassing of CO2 (right after roasting). I have found that the best way to combat this is to just make sure I'm being vigilant and re-tightening once or 2x per day during the first 5 or so days. After that the rate of off-gassing isn't fast enough to call for re-tightening.
