@@catserver8577 No, it's not. Confession absolves sins. Extreme Unction can forgive venial sins but not mortal sins. What you are thinking of would remit the punishment due to sin and provide the graces to face death with a proper disposition. They're two entirely different things.

FYI: Father Merrin, the 70 some year old priest, was played by Max von Sydow who was only 43 at the time. Due in part to his wonderful acting and the superb old age makeup by the late great Dick Smith, von Sydow briefly had some difficulty getting acting jobs after appearing in "The Exorcist" because it was thought he was actually as old as Father Merrin was. Also, five years earlier von Sydow had played Jesus Christ in the movie "The Greatest Story Ever Told". The demon was voiced for the most part by Mercedes McCambridge an Academy Award winning (All the King's Men 1949) actress who worked not only in film but also television and old time radio shows.

The funny thing is that I was allowed to watch everything from American Pie to It as a child and the movie cabinet was fair game, but my mom forbid me from watching a couple movies until I was older--this one and Thirteen Ghosts. This movie scared the hell out of my mom, especially the spider-walk scene. I think I wound up seeing it at about 12 and for a long time it scared me enough that I wished I'd never seen it! For the LONGEST time her freaky possessed face scared me so much it would make my body tense if I saw it online out of nowhere! 😅 That only went away when I stopped believing in demons the same way and now I can quote this movie comfortably and her face doesn't bother me haha Although I will say! That spider-walk scene wasn't in the version I watched and the first time I saw it was by accident in a KZbin video. I quite literally screamed out loud in my grandma's living room. I refuse to watch that scene to this day even though I can basically laugh along with the rest of the movie. So I fully stand with my mom on being freaked out by it. 😂😂😂

I watched this movie for the first time on Halloween in 1998 when I was 11. My uncle had the Unrated version. I had to plead with him to let me stay up and watch it. He eventually caved as long as I went immediately to bed afterwards. The movie itself didn't really scare me. Although some of the scenes were scary. But it was the psychological effects of the movie that get to you AFTER you watch it, especially at night. That's when you start hearing weird noises and get weird sensations, like chills on your neck or spine like someone's watching you. But about an hour or so after I fell asleep after it went off, I was woken up by my bed slightly shaking and I heard soft scratching and growling noises. It was pitch black in my room and the only light was the light switch by my bedroom door, past the scratching and growling 😅 Suddenly, it got quiet, all I could hear was my breathing, then the growling got deeper and louder and the foot of my bed started lifting up and down off of the floor. I screamed and literally pissed myself 😂 Then a shadow jumped up from the foot of my bed and said in a creepy, cracked voice, "Happy Halloween", and the light flicked on and my uncle was standing next to my door laughing his ass off 😂 He waited until I fell asleep to sneak in my room to prank me and did he ever because to this very day, I still lock my bedroom door every night from the inside before I lay down for bed and I still cannot watch "The Exorcist" with the lights off. Period! 😂

FYI, my late husband and I went to opening week. I never found it scary however it affected my late husband alot. Just like many very religious types he freaked out and ended up joining a cult. I am an atheist so my fascination was with the special effects. Remember, no CGI and very little post production fiddling. Her bedroom was actually constructed inside a huge walk in refrigerator to get the breath captured on film. "Regan" actually fractured her back during the violent bedroom scene. So for all the "old ones" who went to the theater you'll remember the ambulances outside, people were throwing up, passing out, running from the theater. It was the very first film of it's type, so the public wasn't jaded by decades of slasher films. There were maybe 4 or 5 actual channels on TV... Just let that sink in. No Internet, no streaming, computers were just becoming available in a laptop form, but still weighed as much as an anchor. Different times my friend. BTW, I followed you from your other channel. I think what makes the film stand the test of time is the phenomenal acting, legitimately great makeup and strong filmmaking. Also the core story of the film being a mother scared for the life of her young child and being powerless to help her - which is a universal fear many can relate to. Ellen Burstyn who played the mother is such a good actress who I truly believe carries the film. If she didn't sell the vulnerability and desperation, we wouldn't care as much. Linda Blair as the wholesome innocent Regan also carried this because if it wasn't for her we wouldn't have been endeared to her as a sweet person that we want to save.

I finished the book while standing in line to see the film in 1973 the day it was released. At the part where Reagan started stabbing herself in the P, my date jumped up and ran out the theater! He did not come back inside. I found him in the lobby after it was over! Honestly, the book shook me more than the film.

Extraordinary cast. Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Jason Miller, the great Lee J. Cobb. Wonderful actors all. And then there’s Max von Sydow as Father Merrin. In addition to some American movies, he had a lifetime of experience on stage and film working with Ingmar Bergman. Most famously, he starred in Bergman’s "The Seventh Seal" - one of the finest films ever made. I once asked a rather well known director who was the greatest actor of all time. His answer: "You mean besides Max von Sydow?"

I grew up a Jehovah’s Witness too. When I first saw this movie I had been out 4 years. It shook me. I too was nervous about watching it. It was such a good movie. It was the very last ‘supernatural’ thing that scared me. I used to live in a world influenced by unseen forces. Demons everywhere. When I left the witnesses I had to work out what was actually true and real. It was difficult because I had been fed alternative facts and history and misrepresentation of science. Demons aren’t real. You can’t bring them into your life by watching a movie, or buying something at a yard sale, or listening to music, or reading a book, or getting an education. It’s all thought control techniques used by fundamentalist religions. It allows a group of people to dictate to others what is right or not. It allows them to dictate your thoughts. If you believe demons are influencing your thoughts and feelings and desires, then you don’t trust your own mind. You are handing the rules by which you think and interact with objective reality to other people. You filter reality to fit Bronze Age tribal origin mythology. Just because humanity ‘doesn’t know everything’ (and never will) doesn’t imply the existence of the supernatural. dealing with reality with evidence based principles, is far better than believing snippets of different stories you heard as a kid.

I also had a crush on Linda Blair from other movies, but I still never watched it for years. I finally watched it when I was 50 years old and I can see what everyone was talking about. It really is freaking weird and gross even after all the slasher movies that came out in the 80s, this thing is so much scarier. I did get to meet Linda Blair years ago and she's a wonderful lady with a huge heart for animals. She's worked for so long with her own foundation to get homes for pets. It's called the Linda Blair Worldheart Foundation if anyone is interested.

Oh, I could see the confusion at the end, so just to be clear ❤ The other priest was giving Father Karras what in Catholicism is called last rites, you could think of it as kind of a blessing, before he died. He wasn't saying Karras did the wrong thing, he was reciting the last rites prayer, it probably gave Karras peace at the end. And yes, it is okay for priests to drink if it is not in excess. They're people too ; ) I always think it's interesting when people say, I could see how this would scare people back in the 70's. Personally, I don't think that has anything to do with it. Is this jumpscare horror? No, but there are different types of horror. You can go back and watch videos of people in the 70s coming out of the theater. Some people acted like you did, some were scared, some were smiling thinking it was a fantastic piece of art and they loved the film making aspect (this movie won a bunch of well deserved awards for sound and screenplay.) And then I've seen reactors today watch this movie. Some are terrified, some are sick to their stomachs. I saw one guy stand up to leave and wobbled, he almost passed out he was so upset. So I feel this is a very universal movie and people react to it more based on personality, rather than what era they are from or watched it in. Great video! India, I'm so sorry to hear what happened with your channel. That sounds frustrating and heart wrenching. Don't give up~

I have a theory that when Merrin dug up the artifacts and removed a medallion he released the demon. That medallion basically was keeping the demon imprisoned. "The Exorcist" is the first installment of William Peter Blatty's, author of the novel and the screenplay, Faith Trilogy. He wrote it as an evangelization tool to show that if the spiritual personification of evil exists in the world in the form of fallen angels / demons, then supernatural goodness as God must exist even more so. "The Ninth Configuration" from 1980, the second installment which he wrote and directed, while outwardly clothed as a farce, addresses these concepts explicitly. It also contains a story arc of the astronaut character from the party that Regan had told, "You're going to die up there", but does not otherwise reference the first film. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2jYdWp3rcSIodk The third installment which Blatty wrote and directed is "Legion" which became "The Exorcist III" in 1990 after a major studio ordered reshoot. This film is a direct sequel to the original "The Exorcist". m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZWxmaKOdptpd7s

Dami is his nickname. It sounds like they're saying Jimmy. But it's Dami like Day-me, short for Damien.

Your reaction was similar to mine when I first saw it: it’s not so much scary, it’s more disturbing.

I was brought up Roman Catholic, old enough to remember the mass in Latin, so all the nomenclature of the Church and sectarian references came easily to me. One reactor went on and on about how all the statues in the church were eerie---hey, I'm used to them. (And as for "don't touch my c*#^t, I never heard it like that" You're lucky. I heard that all the time in my dating years)
