Unfortunately, one of the reasons for that is, that you can do everything only ONCE. There's not going to be EVER again in future another such a classic as Halloween, since there's only one Halloween eve every year and if you establish an idea that there's a killer around a holiday/festival/eve, whatever...every other idea with the same basis is gonna be just a copycat, even if its Friday The 13th. And if there was a movie made 50 years ago about Exorcism and people didn't see it before - no matter how great the next movie with similar theme is going to be, it will always be just some form of a copy of the original. I mean, you can't shock the audience the same way, twice. And I'm afraid there was already filmed absolutely everything that happens in this World, so I'm not sure, whether there's any room left for truly original ideas anymore. But hey, that's just my opinion :D

In 2016, there was a a critically well received television show that was a sequel to the original movie and it was canceled due to low ratings. I actually liked the snow but the concept wasn’t a draw then to most people and still isn’t now. If Blumhouse had stuck to their low budget, low risk format they could have had a five million exorcism movie come out on Friday the 13th and made a profit. They didn’t need “The Exorcist” IP to do that. Nobody should pay this much money for “The Exorcist” or “Jaws” franchise. Not everything can or should be a franchise

The 400 million was for the rights permanently. They can get other directors to do new films or even make another tv show out of it in the future. Securing rights to franchises is a long-term investment. If they get a writer/director who really knows what they're doing to make another film or tv show, then they might be able to recoup their investment over time. Plus, with streaming just having more content to pad out your catalogue can be worth it. It's already being reported in places that David Gordon Green will likely not be directing any more sequels, so they can turn things around if they fork out the money for a good writer/director. David Bruckner did a decent job with Hellraiser, so maybe they should give him a try. If anything, the film might at least have some interesting visuals with him at the helm.

If they only spent 30 million, and they made 27 million on opening weekend with what is likely a very limited marketing budget, it likely won't lose money, it might still make money dispite its flaws. $30 is a small budget for something of Excorcist's brand recognition. Of course that isn't counting the $400 rights expense, but that will likely be expected to be made over multiple movies and TV shows. Maybe a video game.

@@MrHReviews It's made 45 million worldwide in its first weekend. It will likely break even just in box office numbers alone given the small budget. Then it will be kicked over to their streaming platform. It's probably going to be seen as a win by the studio because it has the budget and marketing of a direct-to-streaming horror film anyway, so anything it makes at the box office is likely just a bonus to them. Every Halloween they can now get a new writer and director to do something with the IP and draw people to their steaming service, so from a business perspective this might not be such a bad move even if this first new entry is bad. It's clear that they didn't have a lot of faith in this particular film or director to begin with given the relatively small budget.

Not forgetting the bullshit line from Chris; "We've met before!" NO you haven't Chris! The Demon that possessed Reagan was Pazzuzu, the entity in Believer is Lamashtu (Geddit right Green ya dunce!) Can Green fail any harder? The film is also unbelievably spiteful; Having Ellen Burstyn appear, only to have her character blinded before she reunites with her daughter!?! A extra special kind of 4uked-up!!! I'm with you man, a 4kin awful film that should never have been made!!!

My H, you have spoiled this whole film for me...I was looking forward to this cinematic masterpiece. Nah, I watched 10 mins of a pirate copy, and even so I could tell it missed EVERYTHING that made the Exorcist great. I might have to clench my teeth and watch the whole lot now grrr.

And yet horror fans will make this movie profitable in spite of how awful it is. It only had a $30 million budget, and has already grossed $44 million. It'll pass $70 million by the end of next weekend, and thus be profitable. And that's all the studio cares about. The studio can hide the loss of the purchase of the franchise with a tax writeoff, because it's a PURCHASE. This will offset profits from their huge successes this year, so they don't have to pay taxes. Once you understand tax law, you'll see that movie studios have more tax exemptions than any other business. That's how they can survive massive strings of flops.

I hope the don't plan on using DGG for the sequels if they still want them to be made. Is it possible that they will still use this guy? He's terrible.

I remember when the trailer came out and I thought it looked like the most generic possession horror movie ever, it looked absolutely shit. Normies really need to check out Exorcist 3, imo it’s actually better than the original.

This shoulda been given to Robert Eggers. Coulda been a masterpiece.

It's laughable that after the police show up to a house with a priest that has had his head turned into a turntable, two little girls who have hundreds of signs of abuse and violence inflicted onto them, one of them is dead! ... and there is Voodoo and Occult paraphernalia all over the Crime Scene! ... and literally no one is arrested and everyone gets to go home! What world does this film exist in? As it's definitely not planet Earth as it has the logic of a video game and is less believable than a cartoon! The original film made sense because Father Merrin died of a heart attack and Father Karass threw himself out of a window, so Kinderman couldn't really argue anything else, he couldn't even prove what happened to Burke Dennings as there was no evidence other than his speculation. So Chris and Reagan could walk away from that Crime Scene as there was no evidence of "foul play" ... if Kinderman walked into Reagan's room and Lancaster Merrin was turned into a human Pez dispenser and Father Karass was disemboweled prior to being thrown out of a window, then Chris and Reagan would have been arrested! The Exorcist Believer has Cops walk into an obvious case of Occult PDFILE sacrifices and two murders, and they don't even attempt to arrest anyone, and it's treated like everyone just got a parking ticket for having their cars parked outside of the neighbours house!

Word is they paid $400 million for the rights. So this is going to be an interesting one to watch.

David Gordon Green is the true killer/monster when it comes to horror movies.

I wasn't expecting much but it was even worse then I expected. Probably the worst Possession movie I've ever seen and the fact that it has Exorcist in the title is such a shame. David Gordon green and blumhouse should be ashamed of how careless they were with this film

I've tried twice to watch it and couldn't even get half way through. The Exorcist doesn't really lend it self to being a franchise anyway.

It's not only that Gordon Green destroyed two iconic horror franchises so far but the way he talks about it and how easy going he is about the criticisms makes me mad. He has no understanding or love for the genre. It's all very cheap and surface level.
