It seems like most people often uses the word “woke” against any movie that flops at the box office just because that movies does not centers around a Caucasian protagonist, but always keeps quiet whenever those “woke” movies have made a lot of money. One example, “Wish” flops at the box office because character diversity and representation equates to “wokeness” but avoid using the term “woke” on “Encanto” or “Moana”, despite both films having diverse characters and cultural representations. That’s why “wokeness” is becoming to difficult to define it’s overall meaning because way too many people haves used that word subjectively to themselves and defined it how they want it!

“Inside-Out 2” was not a fluke, due to the creative team behind it. Nor did it talk down to its audience, so adults were willing to shell out money. While the only people who thought “Moana 2” would earn $1bil were grifters (both on the left and right) on the internet. It was the equivalent of releasing a direct-to-video sequel in theaters, and performed as such. Anyone with a functioning brain knew the first “Moana” was not popular in theaters, and is just a babysitting movie on streaming. Adults generally have not been interested in watching it, due to its juvenile nature. At the end of the day, it is adult who pay to see family movies.
@davy2097 сағат бұрын
But “Moana 2” is making a lot of money and it’s within reach that the movie could cross $1 billion by the end of its theatrical run. You can make legit criticisms about the film’s quality and I would agree with you on a lot of it, but the numbers don’t lie. The general public actually likes the movie overall.
@ChienaAvtzon7 сағат бұрын
@ - No, it is performing exactly on par with the original (adjusted for inflation). “Wicked” earned more than “Moana 2” this week. It turned a profit for Disney, but was never going to be a juggernaut.
@davy2096 сағат бұрын
@ChienaAvtzon- Not really! Even if you account inflation into the equation, “Moana 2” still has about another month left on its box office run and is on track to make over a $1 billion dollars. The original “Moana” back in 2016 brought in around $120 million (with a $675 million box office revenue) in profits for Disney and the sequel is tracking to double its original profit margin in the future. The numbers are saying that Moana 2 is a financial hit and one of Disney’s most lucrative film franchises right now!

Very true and an excellent point well taken. I think Barry Jenkins truly thrives as a filmmaker when he addresses mature subjects matters like in “Moonlight”. He’s very much of an auteur filmmaker meant for smaller niche audiences rather than a filmmaker that can appeal to more wider audiences like Ryan Coogler can.
@woodrowgodshyne16546 сағат бұрын
@davy209 Yeah... Like, yes. This is the problem. Modern Disney is trying to shoehorn these niche directors into big-name projects that should appeal to a broader audience. These directors, despite their talent, wear the weight of their world view on their sleeve. Disney films, including Marvel and Star Wars, are supposed to be escapism. Apart from the weight of the world.
@davy2095 сағат бұрын
One great example to your point is when Disney hired Chloe’ Zhao to direct the “Eternals” movie after she had won an Oscar for directing “Nomadland”. In my opinion, her directing truly shines in “Nomadland” because it was her passion project but “Eternals” feels like she did it for the huge Disney paycheck and not because she truly loved the material. Not every indie filmmaker is going to be the next Greta Gerwig or Ryan Coogler!

Or any of the other tripe they've been pumping out over the past few years? EVERYONE watching this channel knew these films would flop, it's painstakingly obvious what films will be a hit and which ones will flop. They could employ a 10 year old to make better decisions than the Disney Clowns at the top.
@davy2096 сағат бұрын
I think that these old Disney executives truly do not know a goddamn thing about how to market their products to the younger generations of Gen Z. They push out force “diversity” and “inclusion” as a cheap marketing gimmick to try to pander to Gen Z because, demographically, they are the most diverse generation and all of it feels so forced and not truly authentic to them. That inauthenticity greatly affects the overall quality of the product that Disney is trying to sell them. The diverse representation feels so forced on in movies like “Lightyear”, “The Little Mermaid” remake, and the upcoming “Snow White”, while other movies like “Moana”, “Encanto”, and “Turning Red” feels so authentic in their storytelling. It’s not surprising that one of the groups of three were flops while the other group were successful. Just my opinion on the subject.

@ Oh I agree and I had major concerns until they brought back the original creator, writer and voice of stitch. The movie was delayed a full year to allow for him to course correct, some of the original voice actors are also back and I have faith this movie could be 400-500 million dollars at the box office, plus the design for stitch is awesome if they get it right it should do well, I don’t think the original creator will allow his epic creation to be done dirty by Disney.

@@Paisa231 I will add, the teaser releases of Stitch in the Lion King was bloody brilliant.

So I did a little scouting, and guess what, only 15% of Disney revenue comes from cinema. Rest is parks, toys, licenses, TV... Bob doesnt give a flying fuck about cinema flops. Evidence - KK still has a job :)

At this point Bob Iger would be better off doing a 2 hour reality show of him running Disney. That would be interesting to watch.

I'll believe this when I see it. People still seem to be addicted to Disney.

Whats crazy about sonic 3 beating mufasa, is also the fact that most of the prestige screening like imax and dolby were all for mufasa, at least in the theaters near me, sonic 3 had either dine in or regular screenings, even so, the fact that it is doing this good, could be doing more if it had the dolby and imac

Box office earnings and park attendance is not going up again until Iger is out of office.

Its sad that Sonic, a computer game movie, is made with more love and respect than anything Disney churns out.

Disney should have a close look at IBM and how they got whipped of the map. Or DEC...you do not know DEC ? Well that the story to learn.

I think Sonic will make even more over the Christmas period though to January with repeat viewings and word of mouth, a bit like the greatest showman did a few years ago

Disney was the castle that Walt built. Repeated failure is the collapsed empire Iger has built. Can't wait to see what 2025 delivers to this clown.

Saw it with six other people. I never need to see another indestructible lion falling off a cliff in this lifetime. 2 hours of the same scene ffs.

I loved the Lion King cartoon, and really enjoyed the Lion King musical. Notwithstanding this, I wouldn't even waste time or money going to see this prequel. Just not woth it.

Honestly, Disney should have probably just released a pro-shot of “The Lion King” Broadway show in theaters. People would have actually gone to see it.

It’s great to see that Sonic which was the first time a movie studio changed things to accommodate the fans wins against a prequel to a remake nobody asked for with its virtue signaling that the cast were entirely black.

If Sonic was released as a special edition with creepy Sonic removed after Test Screening, it would likely still receive more money than Mufasa.

If Bob Igor is mad at Mufasa’s box office performance, he’s going to lose his shit once Snow White hit theaters next year! It’s too bad that all of the money that Moana 2 is going to end up covering the losses of those two movies!
